View Full Version : Where to 'Dump' Photos on the Road????

Hi, not sure this is a 'Hardware' question per se, but I hope I posted this in a good forum...
We're heading out for our first big vacation since we went digital. We Americans will be in France/Holland for a week (with 2 year old in tow, Heaven help us ;) ). How on EARTH do I dump all the digital photos we'll take to make room on the mem. card for more digital photos? Our camera is a Nikon CoolPix 3200, with a 256MB mem card. Specifically:
If I bring a USB cable, would an internet cafe let me upload photos & mail them to myself via my web-based email (like Yahoo mail?)
Or do you use thumb drives?
Or, would you buy more memory for digi camera? (they're not that expensive, but I am not a fan of this option because I don't want to have to worry about multiple tiny little mem cards floating around my luggage, you know?)
Any help you can give would make me eternally grateful (ok, I'm already grateful for this site, but this would be one MORE reason to be :p ) My stress level is already at orange alert because my 2 year old's passport is still not here and we leave next week, so I'd like to reduce my freaking out about THIS issue at least ;)
Thanks in advance,
RutgersAlum

I'd suggest getting a bigger memory card anyway. I'm not sure about the cafes and such...but I just ordered my 1GB memory card from
www.tigerdirect.com it was the best price I've found.
Anywhoo....Hope you get more answers cuz I don't think I helped too much.

When traveling in the US, I went to WalMart and misc. photo shops to get CDs burned on the road. I also made them check each CD as I stood there "just in case" (plus you get negatives too). I am sure there HAS to be photo shops across Europe who will do this now (and I am hoping people will share their thoughts).
Best of luck!

There is such a thing as a disc steno - its a cd writer that you plug your card into and it writes your photos direct to cd - I think its the ultimate travellers accessory - I have never actually seen one myself but would love one!!!
http://www.apacer.com/apacer_english/product_html/disc_stone_cp100.asp is a link to one - they have also been reviewed at steves digicam site

What about packing the cables and uploading straight to processors' web site? Like Wal-Mart of Snapfish.com?
There's also a post in the Hardware or Product Review place about an external, portable hard drive you can dump the pics on. Lauren posted in it, you could search or ask her.
Short of that, you may want to shoot off some emails or even phone calls to the hotels you'll be staying at and ask what the procedure is. Or get the email of internet cafes in the areas you'll be visiting and email them. Maybe some of our European members will know.
Good luck! Have fun!

you'll probably have more luck in france and holland, but while we were in ukraine, all the computers were in russian and not easy to use!! if it were me, i'd just get some more flash cards. much easier to have some little cards floating than to find places to help you out along the way. and you might turn down your photo quality or size a tad so the pics are the largest possible, and turn it up when you have good photo opps, so you can fit more on the cards. have fun!!
oh and goodluck with the passport! we got josh's visa in poland 30 minutes before our plane left!!!!!

Two years ago when we went on vacation I got a "Delkin Picture Pad". I got the 20gb. Their price has come down a lot since then. You can get one for about the same price as a large capacity compact flash card. I always dump my photos directly from my compact flash card to the picture pad, even before I transfer them to the computer. It has saved me a few times, when I accidently deleted pictures off of my hard drive and had not burned to a CD yet.
"Delkin Device's PicturePAD is a small, portable, battery-operated device that lets you store, display and optionally print your digital camera images. This pocket-sized wonder can be purchased with either a 20- or 30-Gigabyte hard drive to meet the needs of any user from amateur to professional."
Go to Steve's digicam web page:
Click here for link (http://www.steves-digicams.com/digi_accessories.html) and go down to the area of Image storage devices. There are a bunch to chose from.
Lauren's idea about a small CD burner is a great choice. Then you can make several CD copies (in case one copy is bad). With a small image tank, there is always the chance of it going bad (since it is a hard drive).
Have fun on your vacation

Dumb question here... but, how many pictures can you get on a 1Gig memory card?

here is the chart I have on the back of my new card.
2 MP Camera 1137
3 MP Camera 853
4 MP Camera 512
5 MP Camera 409
6 MP Camera 320
I have the DRebel which is 6MP 320 doesn't seem like a ton of pictures but it certainly is alot more than my 256 that only gives me 80 at full resolution.

Thank you all! Boy you are quite the gadgeteers, I love it! :p I don't think I can realistically fork over the $ for a disc steno or a Picture Pad at this point, COOL as they are. I just don't think my photo skills are anywhere near that kind of investment in them, you know? Not yet, anyway...
I will bring the USB cables & scout out some internet cafes (and public libraries) with crossed fingers, I'll also bring my extra mem card (it's a tiny one, like 32mb or something, but a good backup, just remembered I have that).
In the meantime, I also found a chart like the one elizabethlmccoy posted, and since my cam is only 3mp, I'm hoping that's enough room photos in a week.
But you know what? You have opened my eyes to some incredible photo accesories out there I never knew existed. Too bad my family didn't celebrate Christmas in July, now I'll have to wait till December to ask for one of them :p
Thanks again for all your help, I love reading your wise replies!
