Flash question

I have a Nikon D50 and am having a problem when I take pictures of my pets. I have one dog who has light color eyes- when I take her picture, her eyes look fine. Another dog has very dark eyes (almost black)- when I take her picture, her eyes come out bright blue!! My cat has medium eyes- hers come out bright green.
I'm taking the pictures on Auto setting. I've tried flash with red eye reduction, flash, and no flash. When I take it with no flash, it takes the pic at a very slow shutter speed, so all I get is a blur. Any use of the flash seems to change the eye color.
Any suggestions?

I assume you are using flash mounted on the camera?
If so you may have to put up with it and just post process the bad eye colour in PS/PSE/PSP

You may be able to reduce it by sticking some crumpled clingfilm on the flash and over exposing by 1 stop, but its very hit and miss.

The problem is the flash enters through the pupil and bounces off the back of the eye. This is why "pros" use off camera flash so the flash is not in line with the lens.
