Wow... this is the lens I'm thinking of getting? Can u tell me where you got it, the cost, etc.? Is it more of a "Portrait" type of lens? Those pics of your son (assumption on my part :) are really soft and beautiful.

Thanks Tina for the link. Have you thought about a telephoto lens? THere's a 80-300 cannon ef that's around $200 at circuit city too I was wondering about ... (dreaming of taking moon shots someday!)
Deb, I have the 75-300 mm tele and I love it! I love being able to sneak the pics from far away and it has great DOF as well...
I paid $200 for it but that was 4 yrs ago- I found this one at Amazon for $189.

I'm pretty skeptical from buying through amazon...
Tina, do you buy a lot of electronics through there?
Yes, I've bought a TON of things through Amazon. I've bought several camera/electronics through them as well.
I've had good luck with Adorama- but with Amazon's super saver shipping, it just makes sense to go with them.
I've never had a problem with them.

A lot of the pros shop at bhphotovideo.com they have the best prices too.
They have a 75-300mm for only $159.99
I was thinking of getting it but wasn't sure if it was great.
It's higher for the 50mm f/1.8 lens tho + you have to pay shipping:

Your best bet is buy where you feel comfortable at. :)

Online photo stores I trust and have used: B&H, Adorama, Amazon, Beach and Buydig.com. Compare prices and go with the cheapest because all of these are well respected and honest... dealing in only new, in the box, warranted products. Now there are more places but these are tops on my list and I buy A LOT of camera equipment!

I finally got my 50 f1/8 lens yesterday but haven't got to try it yet. Don't think there is enough light in the morning before I go to work and not enough when I get home, but there is hope--the days are getting longer. Any tips on using the lens would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
that's great! Glad you got it. I can't wait to see what you do with it.
My latest layout is using this lens:

I have a camera/lens question: can someone please explain what the 18mm - 55 mm means on my camera? I think it has something to do with the zooming. I have never used an SLR camera, so this is all so new to me. I just got a Canon Rebel XT. Thanks for helping!
P.S. Congratulations on your new lens, Tina!

Sure! The numbers 18-55 mean what the wide angle (18mm) through the zoom (55mm) of your lens are. The numbers after that (like 3.5-5.6 for instance) would mean what your maximum aperture at the wide end (18) and the minimun aperture at full zoom (55) Meaning that when you're zoomed all the out to 55 the largest aperture you could go would be 5.6 and when you're lens is all the way in wide angle the largest aperture you could use would be the 3.5. HTH :)
Edit: Congrats on the new Rebel too!!!!

So does that mean that Tina's new 50 mm f/1.8 lens will only take pictures at 50 mm (really zoomed in) with an aperture of 1.8?
Jennifer
04-15-2006, 04:35 PM
sorta....in that this lens is a prime lens. It doesn't zoom, it's always just 50. Prime lenses are sharper than zooms... less optical "stuff" inside.
The f/1.8 is the maximum aperture you can use. Not the ONLY aperture, the BIGGEST aperture. She can use 1.8-4-5.6-8-11-16-22 etc..... up to her smallest (usually f/22)
The funniest thing about it is- I'm SO used to having a zoom lens that I am always trying to adjust it.... LOL!

Gosh Tina, my zoom is in getting upgraded so I've been using my 50 all week and I've done that like a thousand times!!!! Creatures of habit!
