I have a canon xt and have now received both the canon 75-300 telephoto lens and the Sigma 70-300 telephoto lens .... One of them is going back but which one?!

Anyone have an opinion on which of these is the better product?

Thanks for your help!

I would test them both out extensively. Use different settings, aperatures, shuter speeds, lighting - etc. and then view them on your computer at 100% and see what you think. I'd be interested to know what you conclude.

The Canon being the same brand as the camera is always going to be the best choice....imho anyway and Canon and Nikon make the best lenses so if you want the best quality then keep the Canon :)

Canon makes several different 75-300 lenses, I believe. Some are better than others. There are also a few options that could be available on either lens to make it more desirable than the other such as IS or lens speed. I agree that Canon lenses are usually top notch, but I've heard that there are a few that aren't necessarily the best choice. If you can return them after trying them out, I think doing lots of comparison shots is a great idea. Here is a website I like to check out when looking at new lenses. The people who evaluate the lenses are a lot pickier than I am, but I think you can get a pretty good feel about whether a lens is a good choice or not.

Hopefully that link works-it's a hard site to navigate and it took me a while to actually find the review section. If you have trouble, let me know.

Another good place to look for lens information is www.dpreview.com . Check out the forums, there's a section just for Canon 300/350xt-and there are lots of lens reviews posted there. One more choice is www.stevesdigicams.com
Go to their discussion forums, digital DSLR camers and then there is a section just for Canon lenses. There's lots of great info there, too.

Good luck!
Deb

P.S. I tend to agonize over choices like this, but in the end, I'm sure that either lens you chose is going to take great photos for you.

OK, I couldn't make that link work and I'm late taking my grand daughter to preschool (actually haven't even brushed my hair yet!), so I will work on it later. The website is www.photozone.com and you need to find the DSLR lens comparison section.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help... I'm going to do just as you suggested and take comparison photos, etc. I'll post em and try to get some opinions...I don't have a very good eye for this stuff!

Thanks! And Deb... Poor woman, hope you've found time to get that hair combed. Preschoolers don't leave alot of time for self-grooming, that's for sure! Thanks for taking time out to try and help me with these wonderful links, I love any and all photography sites.

OK, grand daughter taken care of! The actual link is:

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

then go to the bottom of the page to:
Performance Surveys>Canon EOS lenses
In the middle of the page, there's a little box that says:
Query Form, choose "all lenses" in the output filter drop down box and "sort by brand"
Then click on "start query" and it should bring up the list of all reviewed lenses. These folks are very picky, so you kind of have to use your own judgement, too.
