I took a ton of pictures today, and when I went to download them onto the computer it says I need to format my card and it will erase everything. I tried to view them on my camera and I got the same thing.
Is this my only option, am I really going to loose all my pictures?

What kind of camera and what kind of card? I don't know if that'll make any difference to the answer, but more info is usually good.
How scary! I haven't run into this, so I don't have any suggestions.

It's possible your card went bad :( I hope not!!! I think I would break down and cry.

The card is a Lexar 256MB that I just got for Christmas. I called their technical support and I need to send the card to them and they can get the information off of it and send me a new card.
That's relief!

I got that message once too....my manual says to do it by way of camera, not the computer....check your manual for your camera.......Hoping this helps.

Just talked to computer expert hubby and he said that's probably what it was--your card is bad. Great to hear that the company can get the pics off for you!!!! :D :D :D :D

I have had this problem on rare occasions with the photo disks for my Sony Mavica camera. I found a wonderful, lifesaving program called CD Roller that recovers the corrupted file or disk. It has yet to let me down. You might try and see if it works for the cards as well as the disk. It's at www.cdroller.com. I so love this program. You buy it and download it right onto your computer. I have had a couple of disks go bad after going through the airport, and it got every picture back.
My pain now is that I just dropped my camera, and broke the lens. But, Sony will repair it for a flat rate of $250. Much better than a new $600 camera! But, it is a week or two without my baby. I'm in serious withdrawl!

A friend of mine recently had his camera knocked out of his hand and it went flying and of course broke the lense. He also sent to Sony and got it back in perfect working order fairly quickly so you will probably be well pleased with the results.
glad they can get your pics: this is the biggest reason to use 2 cards, especially for more important shoots. We have two 256mb cards: buying 2 was cheaper than one 512mb card, and I can shoot half the shoot on one card, pop in the other and shoot the rest on that one. I do this for important events, just in case a card is corrupted, etc.
That said, I've lost SO many film photos through various ways (usually not developing them quickly enough and getting yellowed prints back, or getting my bag stolen with my rolls of film inside), and I find digital to be far more reliable and long term by way of storage.

I had the same problem.but with a different brand of card. There is a piece of software that came with a new Lexar card that I bought called Image Rescue 2...it was able to 'rescue' all the pictures from the defective card. It was free with the purchase of the card but turned out to be "priceless".
