Dh's surgery got moved back an hour, so I had time to post my LO.

How I Love You (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=206368&nocache=1)

That is good for me, but not so good for dh cuz he has been npo since midnight and he is starving. How can they tell you not to eat anything and then not have the surgery until 5:30 PM?!!!! Sheesh!

Sheesh!!! Praying that his surgery will go well and he will be able to eat soon. (In a few days, after the liquid diet is over, no doubt.)

I'm sitting in the business center at the hotel where we will be having our meeting tomorrow in Harlingen, Texas. Very close to the Mexico border, and right by South Padre Island. I had actually toyed with the idea of driving and then spending Saturday at South Padre, but decided with the kid's surgery would be better not. Wise decision.

Went up to the hospital before catching the plane--he's in a room!! He moved last night about 11ish, and his sister was there to help. Family is good!

He was tired, but the aides came in and he had a bed bath, and hair wash, and I helped him shave. He said he felt so much better! The doctor came by before I got there and said if he continues to improve at this rate he'll be home on Monday. I don't know if that's because the doctor isn't working this weekend or if it's because he wants that much more improvement...

Gundi--hope all is going well with your dh! This bunch needs a break from the surgeons!!

It's hard to look at this screen--it flickers. I was going to try to look at some layouts. Maybe in the morning!

WOS, y'all!

Hi Carti -
Did I miss something? Are there problems uploading layouts? Don't get discouraged and don't stop sharing layouts - I think the main reason we've come to know each other so well is through 'seeing' each other's families!
Lynnie

I was referring to: I made a layout for August Scrap to Win where one has to make a layout using three items Paper clip, Overlay and a pin. I made a layout and when I went to upload the way we usually do could not find August Scrap to Win designation? So put in DSP members gallery.

I did post a link in the thread August Scrap to Win but so far received no comments and thought maybe I have it in the wrong place?

That is what I meant. Thanks.

Vallie, re home improvements, I am such a klutz at coordinating and deciding then getting a job done in the house...our house is a hotpotch mismatch of half finished jobs:D (but its home). I reckon it would be easier to pull it down (bulldoze like Lindy says:D) and start again!!! It doesnt compute really, because I love to tizzyfy my scrapbook layouts, spent hours and hours of my life making wedding cakes look pretty, sewed the kids clothing with nice coordinating colours, but house? Hopeless:(.

Today we will be spending the day watching our granddaughters compete at their school sports carnival, it looks like a nice sunny day (mostly it is beastly cold and windy) so should be great. the kids get such a great kick out of us being there:)

Oops, missed the Granny chat:doh:

WOS, Ive been a slack Granny this week, but sending lots of hugs and red threads and wos's.

Google Web Accelerator.
Usually I have had great difficulty loading DSP pages- they take ages. Google have a free download on offer called "Web Accelerator". It preloads some pages for you and you have the option of temporarily switching it off at sites of your choosing. It has made a great improvement in page loading speed, so may be of interest to others who have been experiencing similar download problems.

Do you really want cc Omi?? I could make some tiny weeny humble suggestions but I dont want to hurt Omi's tender feelings if she would rather not! After all I am rather odd as you know so my opinions may be odd too!!:D

Vallie, I just KNOW I saw a suggestion from you this morning about the journaling on my NKOTB LO. Was going to answer it and can't find it -- did you chicken out and delete the post? :ron: Hmmmm????? :ron: Well, I'm going to write my answer anyway, so there! :twins:

Actually, I was going to thank you for bringing up the past tense-present tense question because it was one of the things I kept debating. I always much prefer past tense and use it whenever possible in my writing. This journaling was so strange, though -- I started it in past tense and it just kept turning into present tense. After several tries to make it all past tense, I decided to go with where my mind seemed to be leading me -- ALWAYS a dangerous course to follow!!

Keep that CC coming -- you guys think of things that truly never occur to me and I appreciate having things to try.

Yes, I really do and I appreciate your already giving your humble opinion in the gallery, Miss Vallie. As for being a bit odd....well, your quirkiness is one of the things we love best about you, isn't it?

I guess one reason (aside from a time problem) that I don't comment a lot in the gallery is because of my own expectations. I really, really like to get suggestions and started out posting comments with something I especially liked and something I might have tried differently.

A thread started on the subject of CC (not in criticism of me) and, apparently, most people don't want to hear it. Plus -- and this is inexcusable -- quite a few people said they had actually gotten MEAN comments. The designers also said they had learned to be really careful -- that some people who asked for CC don't really want it. So I kind of quit commenting because it seemed like I was just repeating the same thing every time.

Anyway, one suggestion out of that thread was that people post in the Step It Up gallery because it's assumed there that your LO is fair game. One reason I did NKOTB was for the CC, but I forgot that people are (and SHOULD be!!) quite tender with the newbies.

Sorry for the long post, but this has been on my mind for as long as I've been part of DSP. Thanks so much to all of you who have taken time to give me ideas. The main reason I ask for CC is that I'm still a math person at heart -- I usually don't "get" the artistic thing and don't even THINK about the things all of you are seeing. Once it's mentioned......

Omni, when I did NKOTB sometimes I changed my LO up to 8 or 9 times and put them back up, I thought I had to do everything that people suggested, LOL some of the people making comments were newer than I was. Just remember that people write cc the way that they would do things and that doesn't mean they are right. Like I told you on your LO you need to scrap things the way you like to and the way they look good to you for in the end you are the one that has to be happy. I really did find that some of the best things I learned from my two times doing NKOTB was in reading the comments that were given to other people on their LOs it was such valuable information. If you get a mean comment delete it that is what the delete button is for and just enjoy the whole class.

I took a couple of art courses in college from the amazing Joy Stewart. We had all worked ourselves crazy on one particular project. We brought them to class on the due date and she instructed us to destroy them, tear up every one without her even looking at them! Shock! She insisted, however and we reluctantly did as she said. Then she told us that we needed to be able to let loose of what we do, no matter how we think we are attached. That was the only way to grow. We redid the project and every one of us knew the second version was far better than the first, even though we were supposed to duplicate it.

My favorite layouts are often ones I don't post immediately, but save to look at with fresh eyes the next day. If I can get some CC in the meantime it comes out that much the better.

Wow, that was a good lesson, a valuable one at that. I would have hated to rip up what I had done after putting in hours...But I think she may be right.
I loke to save my LOs for the next day too so that I can look at them with new eyes.
I think that I learn so much from all of you ladies on this thread, I love looking at your LOs and seeing what you are doing. I have asked questions and you all have been so good in giving me your opinions on techniques. I really appreciate all of the comments and good intstuctions. Such as the charms you all were making I printed them off and still have not tried them out but I was having a hard time at that time and kinda had too many home issues to get involved. This past week and a half I have got a new boost of energy and want to try new things. The pictures that Chris got for me and the new scrapping with the stars has given me desire to get busy. Thanks Vicki and Chris. I discovered that I was buying mostly one designers kits and decieded that I need to strech out and try some other designers as well. We all have our favorites but it is fun to try new things. Out of bounds was a fun thing to get involved in. I would have never tried that on my own but seeing what some of you did and how you did it made me go and try it out...wow it didn't hurt to try and I ended up getting some fairly good results. I love this place and it is because of all of you on this thread. Thanks!

Thank you, Carma. One advantage to entering NKOTB after so much time on DSP is that I'm very comfortable using only the suggestions that appeal to me even though I try every suggestion on for size.

Many of the comments (like VALLIE'S   ) have been very well thought out and specific. Personally, I really like that, which is probably why I pay closer attention to the granny comments -- you all know how hard it is to offend me. Basically can't be done accidentally. :twins: :twins:

And if anyone ever offered mean comments on anyone's work, I would tattle to Margie and Amanda immediately after sending out a flaming PM!! :yahoo:

Omi, you've hit the nail on the head with your comments regarding c/c, and I hope that NKOTB is helpful to you. I participated in this also and did receive some guidance/suggestions on how to improve my layouts, but received more of the "love your layout" type comments.....the whole time I'm thinking, ok.....I know the layout needs a whole lot of something and you're telling me it's great??? Must have been someone like me who wanted to be nice and leave a comment but didn't feel qualified to make suggestions.

I also took Lauren and Sharon's design class which was awesome - they both prodded me along to get the layout "just right". I thrived on their c/c and advice and felt really good about the layouts that I completed with their help.

Tonight I posted a layout for Lauren's Gimme More Challenge - did you see the posting bonus? Awesome! I was looking through the layouts that were posted in the gallery for this challenge and noticed so many nice layouts without any comments. I try to make an effort to look for these type of layouts, find something I like about the design and leave a comment. I know that my layouts would also generally overlooked if I didn't have my buddies here leaving comments on them. But I would also love it if anyone ever had any suggestions for improving my layouts, that you would leave those comments as well!

Glad you brought this subject up Omi!

Get ready to saddle up girl! It's time for your call to duty again!

Have a splitting headache going on, so I think I'm going to call it a night. Sweet dreams dear ladies.

Waaaaah for dh, he didn't eat anything all day and they kept pushing his surgery back and back and back and then at 4ish they called and moved it until tomorrow. So a whole wasted day of starving, does not make for a happy dh. Now we have to get up at 5:30 to be there for preop. I swear someone will be hearing from me, if I get up that early and then they cancel or try to put us off. Actually I will just tell them I will be sending in the grannies and if they know what is good for them, they will chop, chop and get his hernia taken care of. :D I am thinking he is going to have a sore tummy tomorrow it is right by his belly button, the mean side of me thinks they need to go for a bigger incision so he can experience the joy of a c-section. mwahahaha. OK, I have got that mean gundi back under control, :) I love my dh and really want him to not have pain (but it might be nice just for a minute so he would understand his question, "now why is it taking so long to recover?" My answer, "hmmm, maybe because I just gave birth and was gutted like a deer." Stop me I am rambling, I better get in bed.

Morning all- I've just seen an amazing Youtube "battle of Kruger" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU8DDYz68kM I hope that link works. It is about Buffalo surviving a lion attack. It all ends happily- so not too gruesome. Have a great day everyone:)

That is awesome from Kruger Greeny! Although, we did post about it several hundred pages ago!!

Kay, glad you said to eat those koeks cold as I would have shoved them in hot! I bought some butter and flour but forgot the ginger. I have ginger powder though just not the fresh grated stuff. Dont know when I will get around to making them I never have time to scratch myself lately. Sands said she has already made her syrup so looks like she has plans to make them soon!;)
Sands we are waiting with baited breath to see if your koeks are successful!
Thanks for the comments from everyone re the tiles, I would not have thought about sealing the grout. I dont think the old man did that before when he tiled.
Hey Omi, you saw my phantom post!! I figured it was like what everyone else said on the first posting of the layout, I should have read that first. Except for the tense bit I think! Then I thought maybe I am being picky or something!!:D
Hope all the kids are okay!!
JD, hope your mammo was fun for you!! :twins: :twins:
Gundi, Hope your husband gets fixed soon (, mine needs fixing big time!!):D
EG, my place is an unfinished project too! Old man did up the kitchen but never finished the bench tops properly, that was about ten years ago and nothing has changed. It is embarrassing not having a dining room, the Old man, who was a architectural draughtsman was always drawing up plans for extensions that never happened. He was good at building up all the ideas and what he was going to do etc, then pulling the plug. Now I have just given up as it will never happen. He put in a huge sliding door in the loungeroom that leads to the non-existent deck, step out into a one metre drop at your own peril! :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( He was going to build extra bedrooms, extra bathroom, a great room, ensuite, bigger kitchen, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah .... got none of these. Anyway I have enough saved for the tiles I think, so will look around for bargains and a whip, to make him finish it properly!!!!!! But then I will have to talk to him!!! Mexican stand off at the moment!!
Hi Kim, glad to see you back again!!
Hello everyone sorry to sound so grumpy but it gets a bit much some times!!:(

I need some help please....I have spent all day trying  to get text on to journel, but because of A. bad spelling and B. typing mistakes, I would really like to type in word doc. :yes:so I can run spell check through it, :o and then copy and paste into LO, BUT when I do, copy and paste, I also get the white paper backgound paper as well. I know we have discussed this before and it is possble but could someone just run me by this again. How do I just select the text and leave behind the back ground paper. OR am I going about this the wrong way???????

At the moment to get this LO done I had to type the lot in PSE (which takes for ever) and then check my own spelling mistakes (I just know I have missed some) what am I doing wrong. How do you all type a page of text???????????

I am very interested to see how to do this too! I did not know you could copy the text and leave the white background behind. I type it, copy and paste it to my layout - click the white background with my magic wand - and then cut it out. Leaving it behind from the get go would be easier. Fran

I am thinking he is going to have a sore tummy tomorrow it is right by his belly button, the mean side of me thinks they need to go for a bigger incision so he can experience the joy of a c-section. mwahahaha. OK, I have got that mean gundi back under control, I love my dh and really want him to not have pain (but it might be nice just for a minute so he would understand his question, "now why is it taking so long to recover?" My answer, "hmmm, maybe because I just gave birth and was gutted like a deer." Stop me I am rambling, I better get in bed.

Oh Gundi - this just cracked me up! My child #4 was a csection, and when I asked for something for pain/anxiety seconds before they did the abdominal incision my husband said, "No! Don't give her anything - it willl BLUR THE BIRTH EXPERIENCE!" As far as I am concerned, he is lucky to be alive - because if I could have reached him, I would have killed him. Fran

Dagwood and Fran I'm not sure how you guys are copying and pasting, but this is how I do it.....

I highlight the entire text in word.... You can do this two ways.... You can click in front of the first word and drag down till the end of the last word, or you can click in front of the first word, then scroll down using the scroll bar, and press "shift" and "right click" at the same time, this will highlight all your text.

I then press "Ctrl" and "C" together to "copy"..... switch over to my scrapping program (mine DIP), and press "Ctrl" and "V"... and it inserts my text....

Now by the time I finish typing this, someone else will probably have helped you quicker :D

Vallie!!!! I did make them.... not as nice as the one's I used to have back home, but hey!!! it was my first go!!! Also with the recipe, they come out too small, so next time I'm gonna make em a bit bigger. Trick of the trade.... don't make them too long cos they break!!! And yes, Kay I burnt a couple too.... the oil was way too hot. Also the recipe doesn't say how long to leave them in the syrup, so I left the one batch in while the other batch was cooking, but I think that was still too short. It was a very sticky, messy job... but next time I'll know better :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

And Vallie I'll take a pic for my PAD today, but bear in mind they are much darker than they should be....

I then select with magic wand the background which i then delete the white background BUT the bits in the letters with HOLES eg a, g, p, o etc, I have to select by hand and this is a real pain...am I missing something when I select, is there a way of selecting the whole background including the holes in the letters????

Having had 4 c-sections, this had me rolling! My dh values his life more that that. :) In fact this would have been a perfect payback for a comment like that, I could have told the anesthesiologist to forego the pain meds, so I he could be fully aware for the passing of his hernia. LOL But lucky for dh, he watched out for me during my surgeries, so I told the MD to take good care of him. :D

I don't know about PSE, but I bet there is a check mark box that says "continuous" associated with the magic wand. Make sure that is unchecked, that will make it select all of the white at once, not just the white that is touching each other.

Dags, in Digital Image Pro, the magic wand has a box to check whether you want "continuous" or not. If you un-check the continuous, it will select everything that is the color (white, for example) that you are trying to select, including the holes in the letters.
But, if there is the same shade of white in the design, it will also select that, so it may be a toss-up as to whether it takes longer to de-select those or to select the holes in the a, etc., manually.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out they have a wireless connection, so I could catch up with all of you while I wait. Off now to a doctor's appointment.

PS - All of you dear kind people who prayed for Brandon Miller (my nephew who was in a horrible auto accident) - he is back in the hospital. He had another surgery yesterday - debridement, drainage, removal of hardware infected hip and insertion of long term IV for antibiotics. I think he will go home today and home health will visit to give the IV antibiotics. Bless his heart, he is doing very well considering all he has been through.

You have to post the image somewhere on the web, the you get the url of the image. Make sure it ends in .jpg or .gif, depending on what kind of file it is. Then to post the image:

Thanks for the comments from everyone re the tiles, I would not have thought about sealing the grout. I dont think the old man did that before when he tiled.
Hey Omi, you saw my phantom post!! I figured it was like what everyone else said on the first posting of the layout, I should have read that first. Except for the tense bit I think! Then I thought maybe I am being picky or something!!:D

Re the tile sealing, make SURE he does it!! When we moved into this house, the grout hadn't been sealed and the previous owners had let it get mildewed. Couldn't get the stain out and had to re-do the grout.

Re the phantom post -- whew!! :ron: Was beginning to think I had imagined it! It interested me particularly because you and I were the only ones who debated verb tense. So, does that make us really smart or really anal??

In a hurry here so may be misunderstanding the question. I put text on its own layer, which is transparent, and then position it on the mat or whatever. Since it's never on a white layer, only the text shows through -- like a png. Is that what you mean? Just tried it pasting from Word to PSE and it worked fine. HTH.

My Mom just had a colonoscopy and not only could she not eat, she had to flush everything out with drinking that putrid stuff they give you, so she was totally empty. Then they moved the procedure to the afternoon. It was going on 48 hours without eating by the time she got out of recovery. I thought she was going to pass out before we got her home. You'd think they'd consider that when they schedule things! Glad to hear everything went well for your DH, Gundi. : )

While I'm here, I put up two layouts today:
Daughter (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=206502&cat=4137) - using Marcee's Lacee (which is an absolutely gorgeous kit!)
4 Generations (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=206491) - using Solitary Flute by Irene (which is also stunning!)

Vickimp I love your LO's and your new Avtar.
Did a LO for the challenge sammdc is running:http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=206541&nocache=1

Here is how I handle text using PSE 4: I type the document in Word using any font, and then use the edit>select all> copy and go to my PSD file in PSE and select the type tool and draw a test box, and then paste into that. It imports only the text and converts it to the selected font in PSE 4, which I can then adjust size etc.
I'm not sure if this works in earlier versions of PSE.

As for cc on LO's, I'm not very good at that either. I know Meryl once advised us to comment on something we liked in the LO, be it choice of font, colors etc. Bethy in one of her forum posts advised not give cc unless it was asked for, so that is what I have been trying to do. As for my own LO's, I'm happy to get any comments, or just the awareness that they are looked at all. I've been trying to find LO's with zero comments on them, and add a comment to those. I follow the links from here and try and leave comments (soemtimes the server is just so slow) and I give up.

Little Gundi...I was very impressed with your NKOTB LO. That is super!

Hope everybody is recovering from their surgeries and have no more set backs.

Well, Laura and I both slept late this morning. I thought she had been up for hours when I finally got to her house, but she said no. We looked at LOs and scrapping magazines and then went to lunch and for a drive around one of the islands here. Beautiful homes, water, boats, everything!! Then we went to get pedicures (!) and now she is preparing a yummy Polish dinner.

When I arrived yesterday everything had gone wonderfully with my trip. I drove right to Laura's house, thanks to my GPS, got out and agreed on where I would park my MH, and when I got back in the door handle came off in my hand! I couldn't get the door open, and since there are no doors by the 'cockpit' seats, I was trapped inside! Fortunately, Laura and her Old Dear were starting to unhook my car, so I tapped on the back window holding up the door handle. :o She was able to open the door from the outside and get me out. We were't able to find a replacement at either of the two RV stores in the area, so the manufacturer has agreed to ship one to me from TX to MI. Meanwhile, the Old Dear took the old one out and now the hole in the door is covered with--you guessed it--duct tape! Ah, the joys of RVing!! LOL

Tomorrow if it doesn't rain we plan to see the area by boat, and even swim in Lake Erie. :D LOs of this will follow in a couple of weeks. :)

WOS to all. Hugs and Prayers!

For those of you who use PSP, I asked this question in this forum sometime ago and learned that you type in word, make a new layer in PSP document with background colour set to white, copy your text from Word and PASTE AS TRANSPARENT into PSP. You then get a pop up box asking what size you want it imported at (experiment here to get it right). It is a great way to handle lots of text because it is very very slow using the text function in my PSP (and causes shut downs too). The good thing about typing into the programme itself is that the text displays on your layout as you type and you get an idea of size, look, spacing etc. which you dont get the other way.

Omi and Vallie, I went looking for all those comments Vallie made on your NKOTB pages Omi and decided Vallie must have PM'd you with them:doh:

Didn't mean to be mysterious. A walker noticed an old lady sitting on her front step, so he walked up to her and said, 'I couldn't help noticing how happy you look! What is your secret for such a long, happy life?'

'I smoke ten cigars a day,' she said. 'Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice big joint. Apart from that, I drink a whole bottle of Jack Daniels every week, and eat only junk food. On week-ends, I pop pills and do no exercise at all.'

'That is absolutely amazing at your age!', says the walker. 'How old are you?'

'Twenty-four,' she replied

Ok ladies, I have a question for you. I lost two LOs when my laptop had problems when I first got it....so no longer have the Png or jpg files. They are posted in my gallery, my question is this, is there any way that I can get these LOs back into my computer the original size of 8 x 8 and 200 dpi? I know that I could right click on the LO when I have it up in the gallery and then click on save as and put it back into my computer...but will it be as nice as the original since it was resized for web site? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Dags I just had a quick try with the text and found that in PSE5 it has a tool in with your text tools that is called Mask text tool. I typed something in Word clicked in the middle pressing Control a (thanks Gundi) then copied and pasted it into my PSE workfile using the Mask text tool. The writing then has those squiggly lines around it like the magic wand and you can paint bucket it with any colour you like without the white background. I dont know if PSE3 has that feature though so you might just have to upgrade to your 5 version.

Oh Carma! You won't be able to get a nice crisp copy from here! It is way too small. But you can use it as a guide to redo them. I'll bet they were your most detailed layouts with the most elements on them and the hardest blending and will be terribly hard to re-do them! Sorry I don't have better news for you! :(

Sands, your LO made my mouth water! Oh, and I want to give Jill credit for my Avatar. She's the one who came up with the term "Closet Victorian" in her comment on my All About Me page for T42 (100 Years too Late (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=205444&cat=500&ppuser=81914)). Thanks Jill!

Hey Impy!! Hope Mom is doing well! Nice new avatar too! Bet you can whip up those Kcook-sisters in no time and they'd be super delicious after seeing some of the other stuff you and your clan come up with!

This is what I really want to say to you - Your layouts are always so nice and I love looking at them - especially your heritage layouts. I really, really hope that you are trying out for the DET contest. I think you have a good chance of winning and I would certaining be cheering for you! So -- :yahoo: You GO GIRL!! :yahoo:

Carti - Your joke was just tooooo funny!!! Loved it! Thanks for posting it!

I looked at your layout and commented on it too. Have you ever seen the *Feed the Hungry Layouts* threads? There is a new one everyday and you can post your layout there and all the people on that thread comment on it and you go do the same to their layouts. You end up with tons of comments! Nancy (cybergram) who posts here a lot starts the new threads so maybe you can pm her if you have questions. I don't usually do those threads but I have occassionally and have found them very helpful and fun. Good luck, my friend!

As of about 5:00 PM this evening, Nicholas' mother was at the hospital, waiting for the doctor to visit Nicholas and give his release orders! Yeah

Yesterday he was finally allowed to get out of bed; after a sort of wobbly start, he took off running. Then he got to be pulled in some sort of car/cart and got to play in the playroom for quite a while. He never had to have any paid meds till around 5.

Since some of you have asked about which soldier you've been paired with, I emailed one of the guys asking for an update. When I mailed the flatties to Iraq, I wrote your names on the back of each one, but apparently the intense desert sun has faded some of the names away and apparently some of you are also a little worse off than others from the wear and tear. But they bandage (tape) you up and keep you hanging around!

Inky is still paired to Igor.

Omi was sent outside the unit to hang out with a transport driver because he is also an "Okie". Daniel can't recall his name, but said that he's a good guy and came back to Iraq even after being injured from an IED explosion.

JaeDee is still with Sgt. "Hiney", a Native American from the Navaho tribe. I know this young man well - he is very quiet and intense - eats like a horse and is very proud of being a soldier.

Crys is paired with "Hell Man" (hope I don't get bleeped here!). His real name is Helmuth and he was born and raised in Germany. His father was US Army and married his mother who is German. He and Igor spar constantly with each other about their nationalities and you'd crack up hearing Daniel imitate their arguments.

Mars is paired with "Cookie" who is a college graduate with a masters degree in film and cinematography. He enlisted after 9/11 and will return to civilian life after this deployment. He is also a 3 time Iraqi veteran.

Karen is paired with "Z" - his real name is Xavier. Z has also served 3 tours in Iraq and is probably a "lifer". He and his wife are from New York and she gave birth to triplets - all girls - while he was deployed the second time.

That's all I know about for sure right now, other than Daggie - fondly renamed "Red" by Daniel. She's actually leaving tomorrow in some boxes and will join up with Daniel in Iraq in a couple of weeks. If I don't hear back from the guys about anyone else, I've been promised a full accounting once Daniel gets back and settles in again.

Great news that The kid and Nicholas are improving and nearly ready to go home - what a relief!!

Vicky - Ryan is doing ok at the moment thanks - he is over his cold and keeping himself busy on his computer. He and I are off to see a play tomorrow called La La Luna at the local theatre.

Kasha - had to laugh at your comment on my Road Kill layout - that sticker on the back of Ryans wheelchair saying "Save the echidnas" got there with the magic of Photoshop! I thought it would add a bit of humour to the page seeing the echidna was stuck under his wheelchair! Dont worry no one was hurt!!
Also my other layout did have quite a few white pointers in it, some larger than others! The beach where this photo was taken is called Newhaven Beach in the Whitsundays in Queensland and the sand is a very fine pristine white pure cilica I think they called it. The small island is totally unspoiled, has no hotels or even kiosks on it and if you are caught trying to steal even a handfull of sand from the island on your visit there is a hefty fine! One way of preserving the heritage I suppose!

Sands the koeks look great in your photo, they dont look too burnt (and I should know, I am very good at it!). Does the syrup harden like toffee on the koeks or do they stay soft? I will try to remember not to make them too long. I might boil up the syrup later and have a go tomorrow with them.     :D
When posting photos into the forum I usually link them from photobucket.com. I put my image in there then get the url for it, then come here to the "go advanced" button. Click on the yellow mountain square, then paste the url into the box that comes up.
Omi, that phantom post is sure causing a commotion  it must have been good!:D You mentioned were we brainy or anal .... Well, when I worked in an office, they wanted a list of training courses they did but the column was too thin to write all the title in. One of the courses was Systems Analysis, so I shortened it by cutting off the last 4 letters, then went on typing. Later it was pointed out to me what I had written!! I didnt notice at the time!! I was a lot younger then and felt so embarrassed!!
Hi EG!!! You didn't see my comments because they weren't there!!! ;)
Dags, I did the text in my statue layout from a word doc in photoshop but as you use PSE it is probably different. I have done it in PSP but that wont help you either! Hope you have it sussed out now.

I am going to look for tiles tomorrow if I feel like it! I am so tired from working today and didn't get much sleep because of a toothache last night. I know the dentist will pull the tooth as it has broken off on one side, it is a back molar. He did tell me a few years ago that it was on its last legs. My teeth seem to be crumbling lately, I guess I am getting old. I hope it settles down for the next few days at least. I may get Thursday off if I am lucky! It is okay at the moment, touch wood!! Trouble is when you go to the dentist they tend to find other teeth that need work!!

Vallie Thanks sweetie for your comments ;). The syrup is thick once its cooled. Once they have soaked in the syrup (after frying), the outside is crisp, and then as you bite into it, the syrup runs out!!! Quite ingenious actually . Remember to have a napkin close by as you bite into them....oOOOOOHHH delicious.

But I would suggest making them bigger than the recipe calls for. Defintely about 5cm wide and about 8cm long.... so the strands are thicker!!! Good luck...

Oh poor you Vallie... toothache is the pits... sure hope he can sort it out painlessly for you.

I've been having such strange dreams about my teeth crumbling lately. In my dream, they turn black and then I end up spitting huge pieces out!!! Wonder if that means anything   Maybe I should brush 4 times a day instead of twice???

I have dreams a lot about my teeth falling out too!! I would be cleaning them, then spit out a tooth, then more, then the basin was full of teeth!! Some kind of subconscious anxiety coming out I suppose:think: . Another recurring dream was walking through train tunnels. And another walking through a cemetery and it smelt of death, I could smell it in my dream:eek: ! Another is catching a train but it never goes to where I want to go. These recur from time to time. Anxiety things I think. I was just thinking maybe I should wait until my tooth clears up before I make the koeks. I might leave it until next weekend as all that sugar can't be good for it!!

Fran

OK, I was ROTF here....I got the same thing from the ex on the birth of child #2. Hello!?!?! My last go at childbirthing was 37 years ago...long enough ago to see the funny side now (but didnt go back for a#4 after #3 came BOTTOM first  ). The "birthing experience" needs to be modernised to placing the seed in a pot, watering it daily, watching it grow and picking it when it is ready I reckon:D. Yesterday he was finally allowed to get out of bed; after a sort of wobbly start, he took off running. Then he got to be pulled in some sort of car/cart and got to play in the playroom for quite a while. He never had to have any paid meds till around 5.

You just can't keep a good kid down! :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

Have y'all seen Lauren's new blue kit?!?!?!? OMG! It is gorgeous!!!

One thing though, don't everyone run off and buy it right away! We never did get to do that rose kit in Gimme and get the extras because everyone already bought it! Make her bribe us to buy it so we get the extras too!!!! (so says Greedy Vicki!!)

I have just spent the last couple of hours trying to see where I am with the chats and challenges that I keep on the list of possibilities, and the kits that I need for the ones that I can still make before the deadlines--OMG, if I scrapped all day I wouldn't be caught up.  And I have to, absolutely must do homework for community college class today. I am so hoping that this weekend is going to be the beginning of life back to normal...what ever that is!!! :twins:

Since some of you have asked about which soldier you've been paired with, I emailed one of the guys asking for an update. When I mailed the flatties to Iraq, I wrote your names on the back of each one, but apparently the intense desert sun has faded some of the names away and apparently some of you are also a little worse off than others from the wear and tear. But they bandage (tape) you up and keep you hanging around!

If I don't hear back from the guys about anyone else, I've been promised a full accounting once Daniel gets back and settles in again.

Loved reading this--once again, you make it real for us! If I am missing in action, please send me out again!

I have taken your advice Ineke and spent the afternoon downlaoding PSE 5, now all I need to do is to get my backside over to your place so you can teach me a few tricks.

I did manage to work out my problem with getting word doc over to PSE without the background......all I have to do is to unclick 'contiguous' when I select my magicwand and it will not only delete the background but all the bits in the letters with 'holes' as well. I new it was something simple but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. Thakns everyone for your help on this. There will be no stopping me, you can expect lots for journaling pages from me now!!!!

Something is quite weird with DSP and Me today. There are so many wonderful layouts and I can't seem to get my responses to post. Even getting this reply area up was hard. All other sites I visit are just fine.

ANYway...anxious to hear exactly WHEN Mars and Formby are having that chat. I guess I will check at 9, 10, 11, and so on until I find it.

Daniel is gorgeous. Who wouldn't be proud as punch of this marvelous young man. All of his Grannies are, for sure!

I found my ORIGINAL 2001 flat self in some old photos yesterday and turned it into my new Avatar for a while.

I think GranFran is a little worn out from all of her travels and excitement. We are postponing or canceling the boat tour of the area. I know she really wanted to do that so I know she needs the rest. Maybe shopping the Outlet Mall this morning did her in.

I have to call Lizzanne now and bow out of our 3-way gathering this evening and let Fran have some rest.

WOS for all the good news and for all those still needing our prayers.

Actually, (and Laura prob thought I should tell this myself) for the past 2 nights I've had severe pains in my back and left side and pain in my chest when I take a deep breath. I've had to either sit up or prop myself up at a 45 degree angle to sleep. Today, it was much worse after lunch, so I've taken some antacids, but it's still there, just not as bad if I'm sitting in a chair. I'd appreciate your prayers that it will go away because I have to leave tomorrow and need to be able to drive.

Sorry we couldn't get together today, Lizanne. I hope to get back here another summer.... Hated to miss the boat ride, and haven't taken many pictures, but have had a wonderful time (during the day  ) while here.

Ladies, I'm just dropping in for a moment to share with you a letter (email) I received from Nicholas. It was written last Wednesday (sorry I'm so late; don't open my email near often enough!). I thought you would appreciate reading it.

I AM FEELING MUCH BETTER TODAY I AM ACTUALLY EATING AND KEEPING IT DOWN--I EVEN PUT ON MY OWN JAMMIES!!
THE DOCTORS TOOK ALL OF THE IV LINES AND DRAIN TUBES OUT TODAY--EXCEPT FOR THE PIC LINE WHICH I DECIDED NEEDED TO COME OUT TOO-- THIS EVENING SO I YANKED IT RIGHT OUT(AND SAID UH OH!!) I'd appreciate your prayers that it will go away because I have to leave tomorrow and need to be able to drive.

Sorry we couldn't get together today, Lizanne. I hope to get back here another summer.... Hated to miss the boat ride, and haven't taken many pictures, but have had a wonderful time (during the day  ) while here.

FRAN!!!!! You have me very worried now, girl. Please promise you will have this checked out if it continues. With all of the driving/sitting you have been doing, I want to make sure you don't have a pulmonary embolus. Catch me on hello, if you get back on. Hugs and take good care of my friend would you?

Actually, (and Laura prob thought I should tell this myself) for the past 2 nights I've had severe pains in my back and left side and pain in my chest when I take a deep breath. I've had to either sit up or prop myself up at a 45 degree angle to sleep. Today, it was much worse after lunch, so I've taken some antacids, but it's still there, just not as bad if I'm sitting in a chair. I'd appreciate your prayers that it will go away because I have to leave tomorrow and need to be able to drive.

   Consider yourself added to my prayer list. Hope it is nothing serious, Fran. Take good care of yourself and postpone your trip to see a doctor if you need to. (Granny advice is always free on the Granny Thread.)

Here's a quick update on dh for those who asked. Right after the surgery he was up bounding around, getting dressed and thought this was going to be a nothing deal, all ready to go fishing......then the anesthetic wore off. :( Now he has decided that having even a small cut in your tummy is not so fun. :) We are supposed to be at a family reunion, but we are taking it one day at a time to see how he is feeling. The good news is I looked at the incision site and everything looks healthy, this morning. I think he just has to realize that it is going to take time. The good news for him is I just got all of the CDs to Eldest, (the second book in the Eragon series) and so he has been listening to those while he relaxes.

Vallie, sorry to hear about your sore tooth. Hope it is better soon.

Crys, so glad Nicholas is home and love the email he sent you.

Scamp, sounds like the kid is continuing to improve, I am happy for that, now please take care of yourself. Sounds like you are running yourself ragged!

WOS to anyone I may have missed, I had to zoom through since I have my "nurse" hat on, but hopefully he will be feeling better soon. :)

     Fran, I don't want to scare you but you have me worried as well. Is it possible for you to stay there until you can have this checked out? These are the signs that I was warned to watch out for and hurry back to the hospital if they happen.

I sure hope it is just a pulled muscle or something but it would be better not to be on the road until you know. I'm praying for you.

Ladies, I'm just dropping in for a moment to share with you a letter (email) I received from Nicholas. It was written last Wednesday (sorry I'm so late; don't open my email near often enough!). I thought you would appreciate reading it.

"HI AUNT CRYSTAL,(WED)

I AM FEELING MUCH BETTER TODAY I AM ACTUALLY EATING AND KEEPING IT DOWN--I EVEN PUT ON MY OWN JAMMIES!!
THE DOCTORS TOOK ALL OF THE IV LINES AND DRAIN TUBES OUT TODAY--EXCEPT FOR THE PIC LINE WHICH I DECIDED NEEDED TO COME OUT TOO-- THIS EVENING SO I YANKED IT RIGHT OUT(AND SAID UH OH!!) THEY ARE GOING TO DECIDE TOMORROW IF THEY NEED TO PUT IN ANOTHER LINE--STILL HAVE A LITTLE FLUID AROUND MY LUNGS SO I NEED A LITTLE OXYGEN WHICH IS VERY ITCHY--BUT I CAN PUT IT BACK IN ALL BY MYSELF--JUST RESTING AND WATCHING BARNEY & THE DOODLE BOPS--THEY SAY IF I KEEP DOING BETTER I CAN GO HOME BEFORE THE WEEKEND--I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!

SEE YOU LATER
LOVE,
NICHOLAS

(PS MOMMY & G'MA REALLY LIKED THE NOTES YOU SENT!!)" (referring to all your kind, loving comments, which I copied and sent)

Isn't that cute? (And kinda great?       )

I'll try catching up with y'all later!

WOW!!! Nicholas is one gifted 2 1/2 year old. So thankful that he is feeling well enough to act as his own doctor. :twins:

Granfran, You have me worried too, I do not think you should venture off to your home. Get that checked out now...my daughter is an Interenist and she says any pain that lasts longer than 15 minutes or more needs to be going to the ER. Dont mess arount with fate....driving home and being on your own is not the time to have a problem with your health. Let alone with the health of other drivers on the road that you could get into a accident with if it gets worse.

BUT.... prayers are one thing and are very necessary, but God did give us doctors to perform His miracles and take care of us. Maybe you should see one while you are in the company of a friend instead of waiting and maybe getting caught on the road with no loving heart to hold your hand. Jill EG says: "The "birthing experience" needs to be modernised to placing the seed in a pot, watering it daily, watching it grow and picking it when it is ready I reckon..."

Yes, then if it's not to your liking, you could just pinch it's head off and grow another one that would be more satisfactory!

I'm no gardener Granny Scrap but if you pinch off the top don't more grow out from each side???

Kasha, don't you dare reduce the size of that photo:D. Poor Daniel is being SO leered over by Grannies and Gits:D:D, I can see he's got broad shoulders though (not that I'm not looking at his body of course:no:

Thanks for the chat Lynnie and Mars, I went (three times in fact:mad:  , computer froze when everyone talked at once) I got two of the freebies(thanks so much) but have no idea what the challenge is, I guess I'll find it in the forum, or was it chat only?

Good news seems to be happenning around our post operatives today, hope recuperation is continued and fast for all. Granfran, take care of yourself, and let us know how you get on.

Thanks to all who sent our twinnies some smileys, they were SO tickled (grandkids all safely delivered home to parents now...whew!!). Seriously, we had a lovely morning out at the farm, we took the girls down to the billabong so they could throw stones into the water, run where they wished, slide down the gravel banks etc., Dad (92) and my sister also came down and we all had morning tea down there together..lovely sunny day and the kids had a great time, then on the way back up to the farmhouse we stopped to admire a newly born calf much to the girls delight! If only life could always be so carefree and simple!

I am about 10 pages behind and have just scanned through so forgive me if I have missed anything and WOS to all!

This reminds me of when my bro-in-law got his piles attended to! It was a day surgery thing with local anaesthetic. BIL said to the Dr when it was over, "I rode my motorcycle here, will it be okay to ride it home?" The Dr just looked at him and said "You have 1 hour before the anaesthetic wears off, you'd better go now!"

ROFL!!!!!

Was that chat wild? or what?!!!!! Very fun though, I kept saying what are we doing but never really got an answer, so I kept shouting out stuff and actually won a prize! I guess even clueless people get lucky sometimes. Thanks Mars and Lynnie for a lovely time. and awesome freebies!

I appreciate your concern, but I have considered all that and really don't believe that this is anything that will endanger anyone else or myself, or I wouldn't leave. I'm feeling much better tonight and will see how I feel in the morning before I take off. Thanks so much for all your prayers, and for caring.

Fran, you know it is just because we love you and want to watch out for you! Big hugs and be safe!

Yes, Ma'ams, all of you who have cautioned me. I know it's because you care, and I do appreciate it!  I'll see how the night goes and how I feel in the morning, but I promise not to endanger anyone. Remember, I have a DGD who just turned 1 year old today!! :yahoo:

LOL I think Vallie aided Daniel in breaking the thread :)

Just wanted to thank all the grannies and GITs for attending the Member Hosted Chat that Mars and I did tonight. There were a total of 52 people in attendence - far more than we had anticipated. I had loads of fun, I hope you did too. Hopefully you all got the freebies okay - we took the links down right away to thward idlers :) Let us know if you need them.

Blackmail demands WILL follow when we have sorted out the embarassing stories!
