When I was trying to scan color photographs from any book to convert them into digital form, the resulting scanned JPEG pictures always were distorted, they always contained a specific pattern noise (more often like fine waves pattern), in spite of that the original was perfect. I use canon scanner. I was trying different tools (Like Soften, Median, Despeckle in differen photo editors) which worked to some extend, however it lowered the quality of the image a lot. Can anybody help? Where does the noise come from? Can I avoid it at the time of scanning, or fix it after scanning? Is the scanner a problem? What equipment/software is optimal? Help somebody please.

That's a moire pattern. Some software will have 'remove moire' and others will have 'descreen' - search for both and you should come up with the answer. If not, let us know! :)

Yep, magazine photos are made of of dots which when scanned show up as a very noticeale pattern. It's called moire, like Janet said. Most scanners have a setting for that.. on mine (epson) it's the descreen option. Check out www.scantips.com and you can get an in-depth, easy to read tutorial on scanning.

Thank you guys, the scanner has this Descreen incorporated in it. It was so simple that I even was a bit dissapointed (just kidding). Thanx again.

Just to add I would always scan at 300dpi. Also always review you scanned images at full size not zoomed in as they seem far more prone to show up "morie" when viewed reduced by the quick scaling options in PSE etc.
