This has been frustrating me for months now and I have no idea where to ask it. Why is it that when I have photoshop running at the same time as my dialup internet connection does it take so bloody long for anything to happen? Like, it takes five minutes to open a single photo in PS and about as long to simultaneously open the hotmail website. Its not like my computer doesn't have the space to have two programs running at once. Does anyone else find this happenning to them? Why does it happen?

Well that's frustrating. Sometimes mine takes a long time to load but it is usually after doing a lot of work. A refresh usually does the trick for me. It could be because I am on DSL and not dial up.

it is like there's not enough space, it's memory. it's your ram probably, which you can usually add more to make it faster. of course if you're like most of us, you'll get more, then be frustrated when you can't run 5 or 6 programs at once!

I'm the last of the big time, dozens of programs running at once, girl, drives dh crazy..... but not had your problem. I'd do as Margie suggests, don't think its too expensive either, may be wrong, hope not :)

Even the Photoshop Pros with super machines recommend running Photoshop alone and not with other programmes running at the same time - it is a resource hog for sure - having said that - I do have several programmes open at once - but I do have 1gig of ram - I find that much less than that and I may as well vacuum the house between saves!!!

try to clean up your disk drive.. go to start-->all programs-->Accesories-->SystemTools--> scandisk or desk clean up.. Then, also go to your control panel by going to Strat-->Control Panel-->Internet Option--> clean up your history, and clear your cache..

then if you can download some spyware cleaner, (LavaSoft.com offers a free spyware cleaner) run it.. there might be a spyware roaming around your PC and it really makes your program running real slow since those spyware collects every sites you visits..
if after doing this and you still have the same problem, then you need to upgrade your ram..
Hope that helps..

here is what adobe says to improve performance of photoshop:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/318243.html
the single biggest boost for me (I only have 512mb or ram, RDram is too expensive) is putting the scratch disk in the preferences to a second internal hard drive (I also have a partion on the second drive just for photoshop scratch disk and a different partion for windows virtual memory)
follow what missmissy says about spyware, and then follow what you can understand from the adobe link above.

good luck
