Stuck on embellishments

I just started to try digital scrapbooking today so I tried the first page tutorial. Everything turned out great until I got to the embellishments. I made sure that they were the png format, but when I used them in PSP the backgrounds weren't transparent. I am using a really old version, the version 6, is this what the problem is? Do I need to update my software? Thanks for your help!

With the embellishment open, try going to Masks > Load from Alpha Channel (or something like that, I don't remember the exact wording in PSP 6). There should be a mask shaped like the embellishment in the alpha channel. Load that and you'll have a transparent background. You will then need to go to Masks > Delete Mask (or something like that) and choose to merge it with the image when it asks.

PSP 6 is getting a bit long in the tooth now. If you can I think it is worthwhile upgrading to 9 or X and you won't have this problem. :)

yeah, I don't think PSP 6 can open PNG files. Try Tape's instructions, see if that works. If not, then you can get the PSP X trial and see how you like it. It's under $100 if you do. If you can scrap without using kits/freebies for awhile, then PSP 6 will be plenty. But to use PNG files you probably need to upgrade.
