Most call it ‘Freestyle’ others refer to it as ‘Boutique’ or ‘Bohemian’ style. It has been called the latest trend, the ‘new way’ to think about scrapbook layouts, the ‘in’ thing to do. But what exactly is a ‘Freestyle’ layout?

I’ve just spent the last few weeks reading & studying every article, book and layout I can find that purports to be a freestyle layout to try to figure this out. After studying this style I can tell you what it is NOT….it is not a style where you throw design principles out the window and just ‘go with the flow.’ (Although that is what many of the articles and books will tell you!) How can I say this? I can say this because I have been studying the layouts. When you look at a freestyle layout you still see design principles being used; things like focal point, line, shape, form, balance, space, color and unity are all still being utilized in these layouts. What makes freestyle different is that these principles are being utilized in new and fresh ways.

So, what are some of the elements that typify a freestyle layout? These are some of the things I have observed:

1. Basically freestyle is a ‘mixed media’ or collage style. The layouts use many different types of decorative elements in ways that you wouldn’t traditionally think of them being used. In a paper layout you would see this being played out by using combinations of things like mica chips, gesso paint, stamps, tiles to make a mosaic and maybe even a Popsicle stick or two. In digital layouts it can mean the same thing….it can also mean combined traditional paper elements with more graphic style elements and techniques (overlays, blending modes, photo montages, brushes and the like).
2. Freestyle layouts use open space in unique and fresh ways. (Everyone who participated in my Open Spaces challenge should have a ‘leg up’ with this concept.)
3. Doodles, doodles and more doodles! We have all seen it; freestyle layouts make heavy use of doodles, hand-drawn elements and hand-written fonts. (When using doodles digitally pay attention to your layers. You want to make sure your doodles are actually ‘drawn’ on a piece of paper and that they don’t ‘float’ on top of other elements.)
4. Freestyle layouts often have a heavy emphasis on type and text. The text is not used just for journaling but also becomes part of the decorative element of the page. It could be that words are randomly stamped on a background or that text is written on a curly-q path or even that a piece of old newsprint is used as part of the background. These are just some of the many ways that text is being used to decorate a layout.
5. Photos are used in new and different ways. The open space in a photo is used as a journaling block, they are doodled on, stamped on, cut apart to make little collage people, in freestyle your photo doesn’t have to stay in a little matted rectangular box.
6. Freestyle layouts also make use of a greater emphasis of line and motion. The shapes tend to be round, curved, organic. Even in a more linear version of a freestyle layout you will often find something in the layout that provides a sense of free-flowing movement.

So….these are some of the things I have noticed about freestyle layouts. Does it make you want jump in and join the fun? If so, then join me for a Freestyle Fandango! Try you hand at a freestyle layout, post it in the “Challenges with Deadlines” gallery and link your layout here. We will run the challenge through the end of the month and, if there is an interest, I can schedule a chat at the end of the month to discuss what we have learned about the art of FREESTYLE.

To get us started, I have posted this layout:

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=113969&limit=recent

(I should also mention that all of the DSP designers have a variety of new and wonderful products in the store that can help you achieve the look of a freestyle page. If you use a kit or element from one of the designers that is especially helpful, be sure and give the designer and her kit a ‘toot’ here in the forum okay?)

This is great Debb!! I struggle to find the happy medium between my simple, straightforward scrapbook pages and my crazy, mixed media art journal pages. This is just what I need!! Count me in!

Oh me too! My Art Journal pages aren't quite arty enough but they've definitely influenced my scrapping. I'd love to look at it in more depth.

And, Debb, great title for your challenge!!

Ok, here's my first attempt.

I fear it's not very freestyle. I like the layout but it's still a little rigid for this, I think. SOO, I may just have to try again!!

Of course, feedback on this one would be welcome!
Great challenge Debb - I was in a non-scrapping mood and this got me going again!

I completed these two today before I saw this challenge. Even though I know they are not too much "outside of the box" I have heavily used doodles and lots of text in the white space and in my photos. So here goes...as I am holding my breath....lol!

Here am I, peeping around the corner cautiously, hoping no one will notice me in case I make a big idiot of myself:D, feeling all jittery and nervous about putting a toe outside my safe little box, tentatively stating my intention (at this moment anyway) of participating in this challenge because Debb is THE BESTEST TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!Maybe I'll just lurk and learn...Hmmmm

This is well timed Debb - I just got the Freestyle book by Autumn Leaves (no doubt available in a scrapbook shop near you). You summed up the look perfectly in your introduction. Interestingly (for those of us that are a bit "freestyle challenged") one of the artists in the book has a very clean, linear style. Go figure - I guess when anything goes, anything goes!! It is a style I would like to experiment with - maybe this challenge will get me going finally. Maybe I should take my inspiration from the state of my house - definately "freestyle" LOL (is this why I like my pages neat and tidy???). BTW - there is a "Freestyle" blog (http://www.autumnleaves.com/freestyle/) at the Autumn Leaves site if you want to have a look at what the girls who wrote the book are up to and see some layout examples.

LindaBelle
07-14-2006, 10:50 PM
Please, please, please...NO lurking you guys!!!
And NO being nervous about this!!!
Even though, like Debb said, you should keep some basic design "rules" in mind, there is no exact right or wrong way to approach freestyle layouts!!!
There should be a great sense of freedom and a joyful sense of playfulness as you put together your ideas. Nobody here gets to be the "layout police" and judge you if you break a "rule"...:D ...so please stop worrying!!!

The secret to my "freestyle" layouts....(and this is no big secret)....is that I never, ever know how a "freestyle" layout is going to turn out. I never plan it out....I just start playing. If I were really worried about my lack of direction or "knowledge" I'd never get going, would never play, and ultimately would have no layouts to show.
I'm not saying that this is the way you need to approach your layouts, but just that it is possible to begin playing even if you have no set plan or ideas.

So please...see this as an opportunity to EXPERIMENT!!!...and have fun while you're doing it!!!:D

Okay...now stepping down off my soap box....:) .....Here's an example to get you thinking about some possibilities.
Dream Big (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=110701&cat=500&ppuser=23215)

I started this with a picture and the idea that I wanted to convey the conversation I had with my son when this photo was taken. No further plan...so I just started to play, and play and play. (Gotta love the delete button!!)
The result definitely has the freestyle look, which went well with the silly conversation...it has writing on the picture (GASP!), lots of doodles, freeform journaling along the doodles, a fanciful and not very realistic version of a globe, and a grungled frame around the photo...to name a few things.

But it's not all chaos either...if you can see some regular design principles here...COOL!!...if not, don't worry, just enjoy and enjoy your own discovery process.

Okay, here is one I made a month or so ago.. It was for a one-item challenge. I never got to post it then and though I know I did not follow the rule of thirds I do believe that this layout is "freestyle" but never knew it until now.

Thanks for taking your time again to provide more 'lessons', Debb :) I'd love to try this 'style' but unfortunately, I'm being very DUHH :( Despite the examples provided, I still cannot see the difference between a 'regular' LO and a 'freestyle' LO... It just looks to me like a different personal scrapping style with doodles included...? I'm slow :(

And wow, Linda, your explanation of your LO had my head in a spin LOL Visual lines, design triangles, visual weight....whew I'm having problems just with the rule of thirds - went to check some of my LOs and not a single one of them met that rule :(

Know what you mean, chicks!!!:D. Scary! If I make a layout that has "good design", it is usually an accident (and I don't know it's good until someone tells me in their comments:)) or I have scraplifted someone who knows what they are doing!!! Wonder if I'll ever learn how to do all this (scrapbooking)well - not just learn how to do it well, but also KNOW that it is done well!!!

Ann (and others)....you have a WONDERFUL gallery full of exceptionally lovely layouts!!!
Please don't be intimidated by the little things like "design lingo" - just scrap from the heart, as you already do...and you'll continue to shine at whatever style you decide to try.

Remember....this is supposed to be FUN!!!....and you already have an abundance of innate talent, so take a deep breath and tap into your wonderful creativity!!

Has everyone seen the movie, "A League of Their Own"? Do you remember when Tom Hanks was coaching one of the players and she started to cry and he said, "Crying?!! There's no crying in baseball!!!"

.....Well......

Here is what I want to say...."Scared?!!! There are no 'fraidy cats in the Freestyle Fandango!!!" :) :) :) I've just decided this is going to be our new motto for this challenge okay?....."We are fearless, feckless and ALL ABOUT FUN, here at the Freestyle Fandango!"

I want to apologize to anyone who might be feeling like I was being domineering, lecturing or 'preachy'. That was not my intent. I just thought it would be fun to explore this new style of layout with all of you, share some of the things I have noticed and have you share your insights too. There are many, many different styles of layouts and I have always found that even if a particular style is not your cup of tea you still might take away a thing or two that you can use on a future layout...something that might inspire you and give you a fresh take on some future layout.

As an encouragement to Jill, Ann, and Lisa...learning about design principles and thinking through the elements of design is an ongoing process....I learn something new everyday I spend in the gallery. (I also happen to be one of those weird geeky girls who would rather spend her day curled up with a good design theory book than the latest romance novel....go figure! ;)) There are many, many, many remarkable artists who NEVER study design and come by it inuitively and then there are the poor slobs like me who have to learn it from a book. Where ever you might fall on that spectrum my hope is that this challenge would be a fun way for your to explore some of the many design options and styles that are available to us today.

Freestyle is just that...a style of layout. Perhaps it might help if I use a fashion analogy (after all we all like clothes, right? :))....A dress is a dress, just a 'regular' dress right? But there are many styles of dress; there is the flirty little summer dress, the no-nonsense business ensemble, the sexy little black number you wear to put a twinkle in your husband's eye, the elegant formal, the purity of a bridal gown. Each is a dress but each has its own style and uses different things to establish that style (type of fabric, cut, line, length, color, etc.) In the same way we are all making 'regular' layouts but each layout we make has its own particular style and that style is determined by the elements we use to put our layout together. Does that make sense?

Freestyle layouts tend to use certain elements (as I listed previously). You can use some, all or none of those elements in your layouts as you choose and as you play around with these ideas you just might come up with something unique and different from anything you have done before.

So remember our new motto for this challenge....Fearless, feckless and all about fun with the Freestyle Fandango.

I'm back...again!! :D

Sometimes, if you are not sure where to start with a new style it helps to start with something you already know. Most of you participated in the Open Space Challenge. Open space is often used in freestyle layouts. So, here is an idea to help get you started...Start with an open space layout, then add some fun doodles or hand-written or hand-drawn elements, or maybe use some fun text elements in your background or as part of the open space design. Take little baby steps ;) along the way and the next thing you know you will be designing freestyle layouts like a pro!! :D :D

And don't forget our motto...fearless, feckless and FUN ALONG the WAY!! :p :)

Do you all know that I am the oldest of four kids? And do you know what that makes me?....BOSSY!!! :p

So, here is my bossy order of the day...no one is 'allowed' to say, "I'm not sure if this is freestyle" anymore!! If you have even ONE element that typifies a freestyle layout in you layout then I hearby declare....IT IS FREESTYLE!! :D :D :D

I'm just teasing you!! But the teasing does make a point. The important point to this challenge isn't so much that you have fulfilled some imaginary set of requirements to make a freestyle layout but that you have FUN playing with some different ideas and techniques that you might not have tried before...okay?

To simplify it a bit....here are some of the things we are playing with in these freestyle layouts (and you don't have to have all of these things on each layout....just pick one or two and play around with them):

1. Mixed media....have FUN mixing and matching different elements from different kits....and mixing and matching graphic design (blending, brushes, overlays, etc.) with more traditional paper elements

2. Have FUN using open space in fresh and creative ways

3. Have FUN using doodles, doodles and more doodles. Or if you are doodle-challenged ;) have FUN playing with some hand-drawn elements like grungy frames or hand-written fonts, etc.

4. Have FUN playing with text and fonts and find new and fresh ways to use them as decorative elements on your layout.

5. Have FUN 'breaking the box' around your photos...draw on them, cut them apart, stamp them, extract them, use parts as decorative elements, blend them into your backgrounds, use a filter to turn them into a painting or illustration, just play, play, play!

And don't forget our motto....Fearless, feckless and having FUN ALONG THE WAY!!

Now get to it...let's see more layouts!! (opps, there goes the bossy me again! :))

You are all doing a wonderful job with this and providing great inpsiration for us all!!

Oh...and Bethy.....going to sleep dreaming of ideas....how exciting!! I CAN'T WAIT to see what those dreams create!!

Debb...thank you for your wonderful explanations!!
I especially love the way you've used dress styles as an analogy!!!

This thought made me laugh....Imagine wearing a business suit, with all the perfect accessories, beautifully coordinated, tasteful dress-for-success embelishments. Get the picture??

Now imagine bright RED sneakers instead of conservative heels!!!:D
Just like in our layouts, it might take only ONE element to cross the "boundary" into a completely different category!!!

Here's a layout I did last night...
Munchkin (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=114167&cat=500&ppuser=23215)

As usual, I didn't know what direction I was going...but I sure had FUN getting there!!!

In retrospect...I would guess that these are a few of the elements that might place this layout in the "freestyle" category.
-a background that was blended, brushed, erased and blended again to get a very different look from a regular paper background.
-Abundant doodles....:) :) :)
-Text as a decorative element
-Mixed Media....this was the most fun!!! I blurred the edge (sometimes quite lliterally) between graphic and paper by duplicating the photo, using a diffuse type filter on it and blending it in the background, then blending one edge of the main picture into the background as well.
Another fun "mixed" thing was using some "real" elements like the metal button, silk flower, and ecru lace on what might have been just a "graphic" piece of work.

But I broke a rule getting there...(GASP!!!)....sorry Debb!!!
I know that the large flower doodle should be "under" the lace as if it were drawn on the background. But it didn't look right that way and became prominent "heavy" looking that way. But I still wanted it there for the texture and as a sort of "grounding element"...so I doodled on top of it. Now maybe in real life that wouldn't work??? Or maybe, hopefully there is some way to put a texturized rub-on or die cut doodle on top of a piece of lace.

Or maybe I'm just fretting too much!!!...LOL!!!

Tranquility? (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=114215&cat=500&ppuser=23215)

It was REALLY interesting (and therapeutic!) to try to scrap an "emotional" response or representation of the way I've been feeling....You know life is getting pretty stressful when you start seeing the very things that soothe you in jarring and "stressful" ways...LOL :D

I've never done an "art journal" type page before, but thinking "freestyle" while working on it really helped get me going.

I've been following this thread for a couple of days and finally decided to give it a go :)
Debb I know you said we're not allowed to say "I'm not sure if this is freestyle" so I won't say it lol, but I have to say I enjoyed creating it as I feel like I haven't really scrapped in weeks and weeks :)
Thanks for the creative push Debb :)

I am so very excited to see all of the inspiring layouts you have all come up with!! Wow...I think the thing I love most about the idea of freestyle layouts (and I definately see it playing out here) is that it inspires people to get really creative with their layouts. I know for myself it is helping me to take a fresh look at what I am designing and for some reason my layouts are feeling 'new' again. I don't know if that sounds silly or not...but sometimes I think we can get comfortable in certain styles of design and so all of our layouts end up looking the same. As I have gone through the Fandango gallery I have become inspired all over again and I have a million new ideas swirling around in my head.

Thank you everyone for being such great sports and for doing such a wonderful job stepping outside your comfort zones and inspiring us with your artistry. I just have one thing to say......KEEP THEM COMING, KEEP POSTING THESE WONDERFUL LAYOUTS!! :) :) :)

Debb Cozzi

Do you know what I think is the absolute hardest thing about doing a freestyle layout? Keeping track of all the darn elements you use to give proper credit!!!! Wouldn't it be wonderful if the 'powers that be' decided to put together a "Scraps of Freestyle Fandango CD?" (hint...hint ;)) Then we could have all our clips and staples and stamps and doodles and clip art and grungy frame brushes and...and...and....all in one place!!) Maybe...if we generate enough 'noise' in this thread they might think about it...what do you say? So, let's keep posting these layouts and overwhelm them with our interest!! :) :) :)

Here is one I just completed this evening...let me know what you think:

these are all awesome and just my style! So many of the links you posted went straight into my Favorites!

I'd call this mixed media, not "design thrown out" too. Using materials in creative ways, combining things in surprising ways

I've always thought of text as a graphic element, typography. The text block itself should be visually appealing before you stop to read it. I love the way letters are used as geometrics in many of these.

I promised myself I'd scrap less and sew more this month, but these give me new ideas to chew on and make me want to come back to the computer! Thanks for pointing this out, how fun!

Almost chickened out posting this when I saw one by IfbPebbles, and then I find myself next to BBM in the gallery - daunting! What saved it was that my granddaughter LOVES this and her twin sister is very snakey with me that I didn't do one for her!! I know we are not allowed to say "don't know if it is freestyle or not" (but I don't). However I did have fun and I learned (sort of)how to do text on a path (never done that before so that was exciting) I think threequarters of me is still in my safe little box though! If anyone can find any "good design points" in this I would be happy to learn what they are:D:D!! http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=114543&cat=2606&limit=recent

Count me in too. My plan was to defrost the freezer, clean the fridge, and polish all the woodwork in anticipation of getting back on the road soon. I really need to stick to the plan, but after discovering Freestle Fandango, I don't want to!!!

I've been doing some of the art journaling and find it to be quite challenging, but I love the concept and freestyle fandango will be a great place to keep working on coloring outside the lines.

Not sure when I'll have internet access after the 29th but will make the chat if I can.

As all of you know the Fandango motto is "Fearless, Feckless and having Fun." Of course you know that means there is NO HUM BUG!! in the Fandango!!! (........but shhhh, want to know a secret?.....there might just be some Doodle Bugs....oops.....shhhh!) Now what in the world do I mean by that?!!! Well...................

On the layout I posted earlier, I'm thinking maybe the background paper I chose is too large/busy for my layout. Also, the main photo seems to be too far off to the side and therefore the layout seems unbalanced.

What do you think?

I finally had a chance to spend a few hours in front of the computer. I think I have caught up on all of the layouts posted for this challenge. Can I just echo Liz's comments....you are all amazing!!! I think there are two things that I especially love about the freestyle layout. The first is this style's ability to capture emotion visually...even before you read the journaling on these layouts you get a sense of their emotional content simply by looking at them. The second thing I love about freestyle is the way it seems to inspire even very experienced layout artists to new heights of creativity and yet, even a beginner can try their hand at it and come up with really delightful creations.

In addition to checking out all of your layouts I managed to put together one myself. When you look at this you might think, 'well this doesn't look freestyle, in fact it looks like a pretty traditional paper-style layout.' So, why am I posting a link here? Because I wanted to show you how you can take elements from a freestyle layout and use them in a more traditional layout to give your layout a fresh look.

Remember some of the 'distinctives' of the freestyle layout we have been looking at?

1. An emphasis on mixed-media (graphic elements and paper-style elements or a mix and match of kits and decorative elements)
2. Effective use or the importance of open space as a design element
3. An emphasis on hand-drawn elements (doodles and the like) and hand-written journaling
4. An emphasis of text as a decorative element
5. An emphasis on curves, swirls and organic lines
6. Using photos as decorative elements in your page

So....on this layout: Small Ones (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=115492&cat=500&ppuser=1383), even though it is a pretty traditional paper-style page you can see the freestyle influence...text as a decorative element, hand-written journaling, curvey lines, and some graphic elements (blending modes on the background).

My encouragement to you today is to keep posting those fun freestyle layouts to this thread....I want to see more, more and even more!! ;) :) :)
But also, think about how you can incorporate the elements of freestyle into your more traditional layouts, it just might give you a breath of inspiration on your next layout!

Oh....and did I mention....there are some surprises coming our way for the Fandando....what are they? Or I can't tell you that!!!! But it does look like the halls of the Fandango are being decorated in interesting ways....hmmmmmmm???? :)

Oh Debb! I had promised myself, I would stay away from challenges this month (in the hopes of digging myself out of my backlog of work HA! ) But somehow, I found this challenge and despite telling myself I should be doing homework - you have to know, I couldn't stay away from this! ( I think it was the words "Freestyle Fandango and Debb Cozzi that drew me in! :D )

Everything about this is where I've been going (hope to go?) with my scraping style. Its what I love most about YOUR scraping style. I think you've been doing it right along! For more than a year, I've watched and tried to emulate the way you use "Paper-style" but incorporate brush work, overlays, etc. in your designs.

To quote you "Because I wanted to show you how you can take elements from a freestyle layout and use them in a more traditional layout to give your layout a fresh look. " and "But also, think about how you can incorporate the elements of freestyle into your more traditional layouts, it just might give you a breath of inspiration on your next layout!" - INCREDIBLE! I was trying to encourage this very thing when I took my turn leading Boot Camp. But you were so much more articulate in explaining --- AND MORE THAN THAT - YOU SHOWED US THE WAY! Bless you - for being such a leader for all of us ... and just for being you too!

Here's my attempt:

Its the facing page to this layout

Beautiful Angels! ? (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=109682&cat=500&ppuser=13365)

And here they are in a 2 page spread

Here is my attempt at "Freestyle", although I'm not so sure it fits the bill....

I think there is not enough white space, but I tried some new things like text background, swirls, coloring behind the doodles, made my own word art, etc.

Hi Deb: I seemed to be getting confused between the Art Journal and the Fandango? In the art journal I have not used the traditional note paper looked but opted for of an artsy feel with quotes or poetry that mean alot to me. I've used photography as the basis but added elements in non traditional ways. I'm looking for a few comments to know if they are freestyle as well. Perhaps they should have been placed here being that I didn't really add my own journal but chose to show feelings through photography and elements, hmmm, let me know what you think? hattitudes

I think Art Journaling and Freestyle have a lot in common. Like sisters!

Art Journaling, however, is about using everyday items to create the layout and imagery to express a more raw emotion. It follows design principles but it's more open to really weird (weird in a GOOD way!) and art-y layouts.

Freestyle is using traditional scrapbook items, adding movement, curves, doodles to get a lighter, air-er layout. It still follows a lot of of the basic design principles. The journaling - hmm - it's more traditional. Perserving a moment in time. Maybe done in an unusual art-y way but not as raw or unfinished. It can be, but not as much as Art Journaling.

At least that's what I've thought while I study the two of them.

I'm going to make sure Meg sees this as well and maybe between Meg and Debb we can get a good explanation of the difference!

Hattitudes, that is such a great question! I think running these challenges side by side is a great way for people to learn the differences and what makes each style work.

Traditional art journals are much more about the visual aspect than actual writing (although often a stream of consciousness style of writing is doodled all over the page). In the paper world, they are usually mixed media and use ephemera (everyday items used in new ways) to create a mood or visual expression. They do not adhere as strongly to the design rules or guidelines like the ones that Debb has posted throughout this thread. They are, generally, much more abstract in nature.

I will let Debb add her thoughts about freestyle scrapbooking. I see it as a balance between traditional scrapbooking and the extremely relaxed styles of art journals or altered art. But I am interested in seeing what Debb thinks about this. I find it funny that I'm very comfortable with art journals and similar art styles, but I really have to work at freestyle scrapping. I wonder why that is???

Thanks for asking, hattitudes, I think many people are having a hard time with this. It's hard to really define either artistic style.

Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe, Art Journal or Freestyle?
Lest see lets look at my handy dandy list,
I'm thinking freestyle, mixed media, mix and match kit items, , lighter airier feel, perserving a moment in time, oops, then there is that everyday item used in a new way,

Debb Cozzi

The difference between art journaling and freestyle?....hmmmm....well, I think (and this is merely opinion...humble at best ;)) has less to do with style per se and more to do with intent. In one of my recent 'mixed-media' magazines they had an article on what they called "Visual Journaling." As I was reading through it and looking at examples I thought, "this is what my friends Bethy and Meg are doing with their art journaling." I think art journals or visual journals are just that...journals....a record of our thoughts and feelings, a way to 'work out' different struggles or problems we might be having, and a way to record what our thoughts are about various things and to do so in very artistic or illustrative ways. In essense an art journal is a way to 'illustrate' our thoughts.

The intent of a freestyle layout is more traditional by nature. It is a style of scrapbook page, recording the people, events and histories of our families versus an artistic journal. Where the two meet I think is that the artistic distinctives in a freestyle scrapbook layout will often 'borrow' some of the elements that you see in an art journal. The two are certainly 'sisters' in their design elements but their purposes are distinctive. Does that make sense? Does any one else have any thoughts on this?

AND....SUZANNE.....I AM NOT, REPEAT NOT A TEASE!!!! Well.....okay, maybe I am....just a little bit! ;) I don't know why but I have been seeing a lot of boxes here in the Fandango? Hmmmm.....could the Fandango be 'moving'? Perhaps to a more permenant location? :) :) :)

Well now I'm confused having read the above comments. I took an art journal to describe the sort of thing I have done in the past i.e. I've taken a jotter on holiday and made sketches and notes- maybe about my feelings, but more specifically about reactions to what I have seen. I have uploaded 2 digitally produced versions of such pages. Perhaps, though, they are not "art jounal " in the current definition. Probably others are confused too. Perhaps we ought to upload them and ask the experts to tell us what style category they come into.

After reading all the various definitions, my thoughts are that an Art Journal is a visual diary. Something just for you, something visual, not about preserving memories but preserving a specific emotion in time in a visual way. (I have a family web site where I post pictures and layouts - NONE of my art journal pages are posted there - they are personal to me and not part of my family history - just part of *my* emotions at that time. That doesn't mean I won't share them at some time with my family but they are about my expressions and are separate from my other layouts.)

Freestyle is a scrapbook page. Preserving your memories (family, friends, an event) in a more traditional way - using pictures, design principles - but using white space and curves, etc. All those things Debb explained to us.

They may look alike at times but their beginning intentions are completely different.

That's *my* thoughts. I don't think there's really a right or wrong answer - just how I view it. I think everyone has to come to their own understanding and create from there!

Here is my first attempt at a freestyle layout. I have been wanting to try this challenge...but didn't have any good inspiration until I sat down to scrap the photos from a recent music video shoot. I was looking at the band's website and album cover and realized they were both kind of freestyle - well, at least hand-drawn. So I got my inspiration from there.

This techique worked quite well for me because it freed me to include my thoughts as random snippets on the page instead of in a huge journaling block (which is more like it was on the real day anyway!) and, placing text on the photos freed up more space.

Let me know what you think.

Some of you know I was in Las Vegas this past week...not my most favorite place! (As I was telling a friend, I don't gamble, drink or smoke and don't really have the budget to shop or spend $100 to see a show...I also get kind of crabby in the heat!!) Anyway, while I was there I started noticing all the incredible grapic design work that is to be seen there...in the billboards (well...at least the ones that I wasn't telling my boys to avert their eyes from ;)), the lines on the buildings, building motifs, the tile work, magazine menus, show ads...you name it...there was inspiration EVERYWHERE! (I know, I'm hopelessly addicted!!) And a lot of what I saw I thought would fit in with the freestyle things we have been playing with here in the Fandango....lots of mixed media, playing with textures, organic lines, open space...that kind of 'stuff.'

So...inspired, I thought I would try my hand at creating some freestyle inspired backgrounds that incorporate the look and feel of a freestyle layout. Here are the first two I came up with:

Blue Fandango Background (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=118079&cat=500&ppuser=1383)
Layout using Blue Background (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=118078&cat=500&ppuser=1383)

Lavender/Rose Fandango Background (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=118094&cat=500&ppuser=1383)
Layout using Lavendar Background (http://http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=118095&cat=500&ppuser=1383)

Wow, this thread has exploded. I guess I'm not the only one who is totally addicted to this new style!

I moved a couple to the freestyle gallery, I didn't make them for the challenge, but I did it without even thinking about it.

Did this a couple of days ago for BoM & T42 and just realised that it could be freestyle too.. It's a collage and there's sort of doodles, some text & a little open space...

Hi everyone! Miss you guys and miss digital scrapbooking. I've got tons of photos but no time even if I did have computer access, which I haven't for a while now.

We are currently staying at a beautiful state park on Lake Michigan near Mackinac City. Take off tomorrow to start driving around Lake Huron - our third Great Lake this trip.

I'm writing this in a library in Mackinac City and need to give my DH a turn on the computer so we can go look for some lighthouses. There are say way cool ones around here and I love lighthouses.

Hi all - new to the site...and relatively new to digiscrapping. I've been fascinated by some of the freestyle LO's I've seen, but it takes some guts to actually step outside your comfort zone and do it, doesn't it? LOL Anywho, I'm proud to say I finally got some guts and made an attempt. And I'm digging up more guts and posting it for the world to see...

I did a LO on our little 12" iBook yesterday - not an ideal situation, but it felt so good to do a layout again.
