Hi there!
I am new to digital scrapbooking but am loving what I can do so far! I have the scrappers guide CD and it is great because I did not know how to use PSE and Linda is great with explaining all the techniques. However, I have one question for anyone out there - how do I delete a background? I have a photo of a basket and I want to keep just the basket not the white background - any suggestions?!

Thanks!
Kristen

Hi Kristin, and a very warm welcome to DSP!! Have you taken a look in the tutorials section? look to the top of the screen, I think you will find lots of help with your question there and stacks more beside.
Look forward to seeing your work in the gallery :)

Kristen there are many ways to remove the white background - one of them is to use the magic wand and click on all the white portions ( Holding the shift key down at the same time to add to your selection) and then hit delete- but this will only work if the background is just one colour - There are other options for backgrounds where there are multiple colours involved

one of my favorite ways is to use the Magnetic Lasso and select all around the basket. The tutorial called Depth of Field is great too (instead of making the background black and white, you just hit Delete). This technique is called extracting, and some photos are harder than others to do!

The DSU 270 PSE Brushes class shows how to extract also by using Layer>New Adjustment>Levels and cranking those sliders to darken the contrast. Then the mag lasso can "see" better the edge to grab
