to cause this? I'm talking about the orangy color OUTSIDE the document. I certainly didn't change any preferances to cause this but it just started appearing that way and it's driving me bonkers. I have restarted PS and the computer several times but it's just not going away.

Does anyone have any ideas?
TIA

Looks like your windows desktop.

Right click your desktop, then Properties

Appearance Tab

Advanced

Application background in the dropdown list under "Item"

In there you can choose what color the backgrounds are in your programs, by default it's the medium gray. See if that's been changed to the lovely orange :)

If you are talking about the outside image area in photoshop, try this...

Go to preferences, then "transparency and gamut"
I believe "gamut" is the area outside your image. Check to see if the box is orange. Click on the "color" box to change the color.

Not sure why it would change on it's own though. Hopefully this will fix it.

gamut actually refers to color management, but I'd have to look it up (again) to explain it! :)

Jennifer's explanation will fix it for you, and wow is my computer some weird colors now!!! Fun stuff in there!

 That's not fixing it. It's only PS that is doing this. I checked the desktop appearance and application background is still gray. I checked all preferences in PS and it's not anything there either.

Any other suggestions?

In PS, try Window>Workspace>Default workspace.

No luck with that either. Althought I actually thought that would work when I read your suggestion. :(

how about resetting preferences with the ctrl-alt-shift whatever while PS is starting up?

I will try that. I figured there must be a way to reset preferences but didn't know how. This won't change anything but preferences right? I don't have to worry about any presets that haven't been saved do I?

Emma

yes, you do: make sure any presets are saved as files. If they have been, yo umay have to reload them, I'm not sure

You could try reloading your photoshop software- if that's an option for you.

I just found a thread on this topic for you in a ps user forum

http://forum.teamphotoshop.com/showthread.php?t=25494
basically it says you can change it to whatever you like

.................

ou can change this area to any colour you like. Set your foreground colour to the colour of your choice, in your case it will be something like 50% black in CMYK, or in RGB: R149, G149, B149. Then select the paintbucket tool and shift-click in the canvas area. You can't Edit-undo this, so if you want to change again you have to alter the colour and shift-click again.............

Oh gosh, that works Lauren! I guess with the canvas exposed (which is common when resizing things) that a slip of the shift key while painting would certainly be an unconscious move and then one of those things that drives ya NUTS till you fix it!

oh, that works! I see now from your shot that you're working in Full Screen mode, so that's the orange is in fact the area of the window around your image, not the application background around the window. The example on the Adobe forum shows it's just his window area since he's not in full screen mode.

how fun!

I had to go change all my Windows colors back, I had burnt orange and fushia everywhere...now my PS is blood red

Oh Lauren thank you! That is exactly what I did because I was changing colors and all of a sudden it was burnt orange.

Emma's idea of resetting the preference settings worked too but now I know how to fix it if I ever slip like that again.

I love it when I learn new things by accident. Well not so much in this case as I was getting tired of seeing orange everywhere. LOL
