I have some great brushes that were created in PSP v.7 that I would like to use in PSP X. When I tried to export them, I get an error message that the file cannot be identified as a supported type. I have also tried just saving the individual brush files to the PSP X brushes file directory, but they won't appear for use in the application.

Can you not use brushes created in older versions of PSP in PSP X? I would hate to loose all these wonderful brushes!! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You shouldn't need to convert anything; just set your preferences (under File > Preferences > File Locations) to add the sub-folder where all your old brushes reside. Then restart PSP.

Hello Liz and thanks for the help. I should have set out my question differently, because actually the first thing I did was to add the old brush folder as a sub-folder using file preferences. The folder appears in the resource box and is enabled......but the brushes aren't there when I try to select them to use. That's when I thought maybe I need to export them individually, but the files won't open and I get the error message. I'm obviously overlooking something here!

Hi, I found this on the net, it may help a little! :)
"009 Using PSP 7 Files in PSP X
PSP X can read all files created in PSP 9, and most files created in earlier versions of the program - the exceptions to this are Brushes and Presets from versions before PSP 8. These must be converted to be accessible:
Presets created in PSP 7 must be converted to work in PSP X. Fortunately, Gary Barton has written a wonderful script that does the job for you. Gary's PSP 7 Preset Converter can be found HERE. Presets created in PSP 8 or PSP 9 will work without conversion in PSP X.
Brushes created in versions of PSP prior to PSP 8 also need to be converted. See #088 Using Custom Brushes in PSP X for a complete discussion of the conversion process for brushes.
There is no need to convert other files, such as tubes and masks and styled lines, etc. - once the folders containing these items have been added in the File Preferences list, PSP X can access them. " and

"088 Using Custom Brushes in PSP X
To use .jbr brushes in PSP X, they must be converted to the PSP X format. To do this:
Choose File...Import...Custom Brush
On the Import Custom Brush dialog, click Open, and browse to the folder that contains the custom brush. This will open the brush file, and you'll see all the brushes in that file in the left hand window.
Click the Add All button - all the brushes will move to the right window.
Click the OK button, and the brushes will be added to the "save to folder" designated in your Preferences...File Locations.
Custom brushes have two parts - a PspBrush file, which contains an image defining the shape of the custom brush, and a PspScript file, which defines the settings in the Tool Options and Variance palettes for the brush. These files are in the following format:

BrushTip_xxxxxx.PspScript
xxxxxx.PspBrush
where xxxxxx is the name the user chose for the brush.

Both parts are essential to using a brush in PSP 8, 9, and X. Occasionally, one of these two parts gets lost, with these results:

If the PspScript file gets lost, the brush will not appear in the list of brushes. You can recreate the script file by moving the PspBrush file out of the Brushes paths as defined in File Locations and importing the brush again.
If the PspBrush file gets lost, the brush will appear in the list of brushes as a big blob. If you cannot find the associated PspBrush file, you will need to delete the PspScript file and re-import the brush from the original .jbr file. "
