Okay everyone.......

Are you ready to FANDANGO?!!! :D :D :D

This week we are going to explore how freestyle layouts let photos break out of their square and rectangular mats. In many freestyle layouts your photos can become another decorative element that helps tell the story. Here are some of the ways I have seen photos used in freestyle layouts:

1) The 'open space' in a photo can become a place to journal

2) You can extract people and objects from your photos and use them to illustrate your layout or make them teeny tiny and add them as illustrations in your journaling

3) Of course you can always doodle on a photo :)

4) You can add decorative elements to your photo....crowns, hats, wings (mermaid tails ;) for those that don't understand that one you can check out my gallery and see what an awful mom I am!! :))

5) Play with filters on your photo, give them a painterly effect, make them look like an etching or an embossed carving, blend them into your background or have them look like a polaroid transfer.

6) Slice and splice your photos

These are just a few of many, many ways you can help your photos break out of their little square boxes and 'play the Fandango way.' :p

Here are a couple of layouts where I played with my photos, they aren't exactly freestyle, but imagine doing these kinds of things in a freestyle setting:

All right everyone, you know the drill by now........

LET'S FANDANGO!!! :D :D :D :D :D

What a great challenge... it will help me get out of the box (pun intended!) I find it hard to even angle my pics for some reason so I'll have to stretch for this one!

This is one that I did last week for Stacey's and Tina's challenge but it is a freestyle layout that uses the main photo as a place to journal. I also added some stamps to the photo:

Thanks Debb for your wonderful info for these challenges. Even if I don't get a chance to make a layout for the challenge I always read your tips and they are very helpful to me!! So thanks, and I will definitely do my best to get one in for this challenge!! :)

Here is a new one I just made tonight for this challenge. I used my photo as a journaling mat and another photo as the mat for my title:

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=125718&cat=994

In making this layout I used Rene Bross's Little Critters kit and her "Build a Doodle" set. HAVE YOU SEEN THESE PRODUCTS?!! If you like doing freestyle layouts you just have to go check them out, they are PERFECT for the Fandango!!! ;) :)

I'm finding this to be the hardest challenge to date (or I'm suffering from major scrapper's block... or both!) I thought by scraplifting Debb's wonderful layout I'd get a bit of inspiration but it's not happening so well... I'm going to link my layout here anyway (so I'll have at least done one) and try again later. CC welcome.

I think this is a little more fandango-ish but may not meet the assignment challenge... I journaled and placed a stamp on the photo but it's pretty nondescript, not at all a major feature of the whole LO.. CC's appreciated!

Well, I didn't exactly follow the directions for this layout. This ending up being an open space layout rather than freestyle. I can't even get out of the rectangular box that I am in. Simple Pleasures (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=126118&nocache=1)

OK, nobody laugh at me ....

I wanted to try my hand at some out of the box perspective. I also needed to use some of my SNL goodies in a preview.

So ... I took the picture of my newphew kissing his new bride and ... fiddled with it. I'm not 100% happy with the results, and maybe some text with the layout would help. But I don't even know HOW to add text to a layout like this.

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=126093

Maybe I should have not tried to try new things on my SNL elements preview, too.

That said, CC's welcome.

here is my try--i did a 5 page layout from a recent trip to the aquarium. needless to say, i took way, way, way too many pics and i was attached to way, way, way too many of them! :)

aquarium pg. 2 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=126171&cat=500&ppuser=48705)

i tried for all the pages to get outside of the photo box, but i think this is my true try at that!

Well, my family decided to watch a scary movie tonight so I got several hours to scrap (better than doing laundry!) Here's another attempt at this weeks challenge. I need to work on my extracting skills but I liked the way this turned out. It really illustrates what the day was like (you'd have to know the three boys to really understand... the little one is a wild child!) CC appreciated.

I didn't use any rules, I just put things on there how I liked them, so I guess that fits the freestyling?

Ok...here's mine. Dream Come True (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=123766&cat=500&ppuser=51750)

This has been part of the NKOTB5 final week and I never thought I was doin' freestyle already with it.

I used a nice bridal entrance facade photo of mine...lowered its opacity and blended with the background paper the it was used as my journalling mat.

Is this Freestyle? Cowboy Harry (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=126210)

Does it have any Freestyle elements to it at all?

What would make it more Freestyle?

Can you tell I'm having trouble grasping this?;) I know it when I see it (mostly. I think.) But this is my first attempt at it myself.

I'm not sure what I was envisioning when I started this layout, and I'm not sure what I ended up with. But I like it - and it's different from my usual style.

Here is a photo very enlarged used with Kim's doodles to duplicate water spray, I then took her overlay and duplicated and turned once to make the frame,

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=125305
Posted this last week but forgot to link the thread, the bg is a white blended doodled bg that almost looks like doodles only, love the colours here, I faded the photo on both these lo's but turning down the opacity,

I think this might work in this category - because of the way I played with photo and used the bulk of it as a "frame" for the "focus" of the photo. I like the effect and it was fun and easy to do.

I haven't gotten a chance to spend time in the gallery this weekend, but I will this evening! I just had to jump in here and say....You are all so sweet and precious to me!!! I can't even begin to say how much I appreciate your hearts...wanting to try new things, and wanting it to be right. For those of you that are concerned about your layouts 'fitting' ..... don't be!!! THIS IS the FANDANGO!!! We are all about trying new things and making them work, but the MOST important thing is that you end up with layouts that you are happy with!!

Okay.....(((((Group HUG)))))) :) :) :) :)

So I am not sure wether this will fit in this week's or not. I really am hoping that it is more about the journaling and that the pictures are accents but then again I am not sure. I will go back and try to make it look more like it is justified (make the left side look more even) but I really should go clean house. Any cc is more than welcome. I really don't know about any of the doodles or the top center circle... thinking about putting two more contrasting patterned papers... anyway tell me what you think...

All right i have been bitten by the bug...just re read things and figure my kiss layout could fit here...i used a PSP script to change the pic so it looks like it is drawn with charcoal or conte crayon and added a mask...the frame is a mask too and i also added a mask and a second background layer to the initial background...i loove stuffing around with the designers elements and it is always a challenge to add something new to a layout...a new twist on what i would normally acheive...PSP offers some fantastic ways of doing this....CC always welcome..Cheers Liz

and then here is one loud (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=126170&cat=500&ppuser=45073) with stacey's freestyle quick click and backpack.

Well, better late than never... here is mine for this week, Ruby (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=127341&cat=2943). Not as Fandango as it could be, but I used splicing, playing with the photo, and writing on the photo. I also tried not to use white space because all my previous freestylish los use white space.

Here's a late effort from me for this challenge. Not very "freestyle" (still having trouble working outside my cosy little safe zone) but I did almost doodle on the photo and I actually did journal on it!

This is my attempt at the challenge. Thanks Deb for the wonderful explanations and ideas. Without this stimulus, I would definitely not attempt to freestyle.

I did a Freestyle LO for the DET challenge, below is the link if anyone wants to see it. I thought I'd share it with my Fressetyle friends. I extracted a photo of myself holding a paintbrush and attempted to make it look like I was actually painting in the layout. I did a "messy" journal entry. I tried to push the boundries a bit with my placement of papers in the background while adding depth. Can't make CC in the DET gallery, but other comments are allowed. I see there are some of the DET contestants here in the FS Forum, best of luck to you!

My Surreal Child (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=128863&limit=all) certainly took advantage of the open spaces! :)

Maybe I should have not tried to try new things on my SNL elements preview, too.

That said, CC's welcome.
