Anyone use a monopod and like it? I find the tripod so cumbersome at times. I'm taking a photography at the local community college and sometimes I need a slow shutter speed and need something to prevent shaking.

My husband just got one that he could take with him to football games and such. He tried it out for the first time on Friday night, and so far he loves it. Its a lot less cumbersome and does a great job of steadying the camera.

I also have a monopod, and I used it last weekend with my camera. Up until now, I've been very pleased with it, as it has been great at helping me to steady my shots.
I think I paid under $30 for it at a "big box" store.
I recently purchased a 75-300mm lens to use with my Canon Digital Rebel XT; everyone warned me about camera shake and how I would need to use a tripod. They were right. Even holding my breath, I found that I couldn't take a clear shot. I thought, though, that the monopod would do the trick. Not!
For a smaller camera - or for my Canon with the kit lens - the monopod is a great option. If you're using a big lens with camera shake problems, the monopod won't help, and you'll need a tripod.

Hmmm...can you borrow one from someone and try it out? DH used his monopod with his 75-300mm lens and didn't have problems. I guess maybe it depends on the conditions that you are shooting under, like I said his is VERY new and he just shot pictures at a football game one time so far. I'd hate for you to spend money just to find that it won't work for what you want to do.
