I think the fuji finepix range have a good review.
I would reccommend when looking at a camera that you look for good optical zoom . 4 mp will give you clear 8x10 print out.

Is it a compact camera your looking at? If you are then there are just tons of options out there for you, if your looking around $300. I guess as I always say when people ask this same question it really is down to personal preference & what you want out of your camera.

I personally like Fuji cameras & last year before I bought my DSLR I bought or should I say my husband bought the Fuji F410 which is a 3M Pixels camera. We bought it just as a snappy camera & that as taken some really beautiful images, to say it is a small compact. If you check in my gallery you'll see a couple of pics entitled True Beauty & these were taken using the Fuji F410.

If your willing to spend slightly more then you could go for Fuji's F610 which is a 6M pixel camera & a newer model & was the worlds first 6M pixel compact camera. I think 6M pixels is pretty impressive for the size of this camera & with the cameras LSI processing can out put this to a total of 12.3MP allowing an image size up to 20 x 15 inches. That is 1.5 inches wider than the Canon EOS 1DS ($10,000, if I've got my conversions right) & thats from a compact camera! It is also supposed to have great features, supposedly easy to use & image quality is also said to be really good.

Of course there are tons of other camera models out there & if your looking for a real bargain you could try taking a peek on Ebay, although I do stress if you do want to buy from here, then please please check a persons feedback before placing a bid. Also if you stick with approved ebay sellers your often a whole lot safer too.

Hope this as helped & goodluck in finding your new camera!

WHAT FUN! I love shopping!

There are a couple websites that I would totally recommend, the first being dpreview.com. They've got full reviews of everything, and price info, and you can compare models on whatever criteria - totally helpful.

I do like my fuji - it's an older slr model, so I am sure that the one thing I don't like about it (shutter LAG - a big time passes between when I hit the shutter button and when the image is actually recorded) has probably been alleviated to a large extent.

Cannon also has a really good line of compact cameras, as does Kodak (my first digital was a Kodak point and shoot - 2.2 megapixels, and I actually took pictures with it this weekend - one's up in my gallery! the last one - friendship or something...), and that was an awesome camera for me just starting out.

I'll go dig and see whether I can find more info on camera resources, but it sounds like you've got a pretty good start!

LET US KNOW what you decide!!!!!1

Thank you for the wonderful advice. I'm going to start looking and comparing. I love bargin shopping too.
I believe my mom has a fuji and I've always liked it but it could be a little better at shutter speed. also the batteries don't last too long.
I wish I could win the lottery and just buy a top o the line peice of machinery!!! :D

I have the fuji finepix S5000 and so far really like it. I do wish the shutter speed was a little faster. Also the flash takes a minute between pics. Other than those two things, I am very happy with it. BTW....the shutter speed and flash is much better than some other cameras I have seen but before this, I had a sony mavica and the flash and shutter speed were impecable. You can go to the photography gallery and see pics that I have taken with my fuji. :) Also, I buy rechargable AA batteries and keep a set with me. make sure you get ones with atleast 2100 mAh Longer life. DON'T get ones that say they recharge in 5 mins.
