I'm so excited about the coasters I made for my daughter for Christmas. I saw this idea in the June 2006 issue of Creating Keepsakes in a new products section. The kit cost $39.99 and included supplies to make 4 coasters. Being the tightwad that I am, I figured there had to be a way to make the coasters for a lot less money.
I bought 4" marble tiles (has to be marble -- ceramic would break if you drop them) at Home Depot and designed "mini" layouts to fit them. I printed the layouts on a sheet of Avery Clear full sheet labels. I cut out the layouts, attached them to the marble tiles, and then sprayed with 6 light coats of Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane. (First coat has to be very light so you don't make the inkjet ink run.) Then I cut pieces of cork and glued to the bottom of the tile.
I am going to try to attach a photo of the coasters. Don't want to put them in my gallery since she looks at my gallery. I don't think she reads my posts in the forum though -- I'm in trouble if she does!
