I can't think of one that I have received or have given BUT..... I remember as a kid, my Uncle Bud started a joke gift with my mom. He put a whole bunch of junk in an old wooden cigar box (the kind they probobly don't make anymore) and wrapped it for Christmas. Every year for 10 years or so, they passed that cigar box back and forth between themselves and every year they would each add a piece of junk to the box. Things like...and old deck of cards, a turkey feather, a rusty nail, nuts and bolts, and old rabbits foot( the kind with the metal and small chain on one end), a tube of used up lipstick, etc. Just JUNK!!!! i think my mom saved small junky things just for that box!!!! It was kind of fun to see what NEW item was going to show up in the box!

Oh...here is another one... I don't remember this but my Aunt and my mom always tell this story.....Right after my Mom and Dad got married, My Aunt(mom's youngest sister) set in to wanting a new pair of shoes for Christmas. Mom and Dad came down from PA. to MS. for the holidays and my Dad bought her the new pair of shoes. Just to make things exciting, he went out to the barn with my grandpa and got a new COW POKE (KWIM? ;) ) he then wrapped the shoes up nice in the bottom of the box and put the COW POKE on top. Well, when she opened the box on Christmas morning, she had to stick her hand in the COW POKE to get to the shoes. Needless to say, the cow poke got thrown at my dad! :) Makes for a nice funny story on Christmas eve! ;)

Love those stories Carla!!
I don't really have any worst stories because, well, I buy my own gifts!! I decide what I want, order it, and SURPRISE! I get what I want!! LOL
Well, there is that spice rack incident . . . in case you don't know, I know how to cook but HATE to do it! I consider it a chore worse than scrubbing the bathroom. Yet, somehow, just after my husband and I moved into together, my birthday . . . he gives me a spice rack?? I think he thought I'd be cooking dinners for us . . . Oh. Can't. Breathe. Through. The Laughing. What a rude awakening that man got.
Of course, he thought he was doing good. He heard me say I needed some new spices as my roommate cooked and when she moved out I didn't have any. I *meant* I need to go to the grocery store and buy the 3 I might use. Not get me a rack as my birthday present!
Hence, I buy my own gifts! Then I never have to say, that's so sweet, that's such a nice thought while my brain is thinking - a SPICE rack?? Who do you think you just moved in with???? LOL

LOL, that LO is awesome, I can't think of any terrible gifts off the top of my head but I'm like Bethy - usually pick my own. Actually DH and I were talking about xmas last night and he asked whether I'd like some fishing gear this year and I'll get him some new clothes (then we swap - lol!!!)
I'm not sure if I can get to the chat - it'll depend on the time it is here (Australia) but can I still do the challenge?

I think Linda's hubby and mine must be brothers! My husband asked me if I'd like a new toilet for valentine's day! I put an end to that immediately!. The gift needs to either smell good, be soft, or sparkle. The three S's.
As for the worst gift recieved/given, our family has a gift that passes on each year. We call it the Christmas Turd. It's made of sawdust and some gluey hardener. I put it in my brother's stocking years and years ago. Each year someone gets it. It's hidden beneath clothing in a gift, or in a candy box, etc. It has traveled around the world, and brought smiles and laughter to the faces of my brothers when they were stationed overseas, and got this little piece of home. Icky, yes. Disgusting, yes. Toss in the trash and be rid of it, NO WAY!

We have a Big Bra Boobie Prize that gets passed from female to female in the family, Each person that receives it must add an ornament to it, the person receiving must model it... really funny when the 12 or 13 year olds started receiving it.
My BIL bought my sister this really over the top elegant vibrant jacket full of shimmer from the Salvation Army and wrapped up very elegantly as well. It is a jacket that you might not know because of the season, if it was the true gift or not. Naturally all the little ones loved the glimmer. Debbie stammered out a thank you. Luc acknowledged it and then burst out laughing... ya might have had to be there for this one...

Spice Rack story...
We received one for a wedding gift. FULL of nice glass jars and spices IN them.
My husband has insisted that it always be on the wall. When it is in the way, when we move, when it gets dirty and I get SO tired of cleaning it... etc.
Well, almost 31 years later ...
I STILL can't get that spice rack off the wall! I know the spices in there are dead. [We've used oh, maybe 5 or 6 of them over the years, which I DO refill and keep in there...)
But ladies, there's 3 rows of probably 8 jars across.
And I hate cleaning spice jars now.
So ... I laughed at your spice rack story, Bethy! Maybe my hubby is waiting for me to cook every night or something, too!
I'm gonna leave it in my last will and testament that when they bury him, they use that spice rack for his headstone....

I have a few humbug gifts from my hubby (and I still can't convince him to let me buy my own). I had lived on my own for about 15 years already when we met. The first present he ever bought me was a toaster (he didn't like my 2 slicer, it also didn't do bagels, can you imagine?), you can be darned sure I got the biggest bouquet of flowers ever for the next Mother's Day. But as usual he's a man and their memories are oh so short, so the following year I got a coffee maker (I don't drink coffee, I drink tea, HE drinks coffee). The following year I got wood wainscotting for the bathroom upstairs, with stain of course (the woods still in the garage, and that was 2 years ago). He redeemed himself this year by getting me a beautiful walking stick and a bird house to add to my collection, gotta love him. I also have to say that my mom and him split last Xmas on the best gift I have ever gotten and that was my new Nikon D50 camera, with flash, tripod, camera bag, everything I needed, I did cry over that one!

My great aunt was a frugal older widow so when Christmas came around she found ways to stretch her gifts. For example she would give us a box of stationary but one sister would get the envelopes and the other would get the paper and one would get the box it came in. Or another I remember was the year we got a beading set, only I got the plastic for stringing, my sister got the beads and my youngest sister was the lucky recipient of the book of instructions. One year she was extravagant and we each got our own box... of kleenex! Looking back I smile fondly at her funny gifts but as kids my sisters and I would groan.

This isn't a humbug gift but for awhile my grandpa thought it was. I gave him a beautiful handknit sweater and thought he would be so pleased with it. In the mad Christmas eve gift opening with dozens of relatives I didn't get to see him open it but when things calmed down I asked grandma if he didn't like his sweater because it wasn't like him not to say anything... so she asked him and he looked a little confused and said he only got a box of cereal from me! Grandma asked him where it was and he said he had put it away in the kitchen cupboard. Sure enough grandma went and got it and inside was the sweater. I had run out of gift boxes and at the last min used a big empty cereal box to wrap it! It's funny how cereal boxes at christmas still make me laugh!

The first Christmas we were married my husband got me a dutch oven (large baking pot). I had saved my money and bought him several gifts all things he would like for hunting. I was so proud of all the gifts that I had gotten him knowing they were things that he had been wanting. And all I got was the $10.00 pot! I was so upset, just like Linda, that I cried. Needless to say I have never gotten any kind of appliance or cooking items for any other gift. I must have really cried a lot for him to remember after 36 years.
Sorry, I won't be able to be at the chat. I have a meeting tonight, unless of course if I can leave early.

One Christmas gift that stands out for me was a big ol' box stuffed full of over the counter medicines. Sucrets, aspirin, vitamin C... oh gosh the list goes on and on for what was in that box. And this was from a serious love interest of mine at the time - we were still in that warm blush of hearts and flowers exciting phase ...so I at first thought it was a really funny gag gift before my "real" present was handed over, then I realized THIS was IT. This was REALLY it. Period. Bitter disappointment was the hardest pill I've ever swallowed, LOL... Oh sure I rummaged through the box hoping, HOPING there was a little something hidden in there - my mind still wouldn't accept that THIS was IT.
Oh. Well then. Couldn't WAIT to meet up with my friends to share all those warm fuzzy presents we received from our Loves, lol. I mean - he SHOPPED for these things, he had to LOOK for this stuff, he packed it just so. I cried. I wasn't even a sniffler, why on earth would he gift me with this stuff?? Through the tears I told him it was fine, "FINE!"... that I'd just crack open the bottle of aspirin for my sudden excruciating headache.

you guys are definately making me laugh tonight. Love the spice rack stories. I have one which I got for our wedding shower 11 years ago which sits on my counter and yes, I too only used maybe 2 spices out of it often. Maybe it's time to declutter that and empty all the spices and fill with stuff I do use. Why in the world they give you FENNEL, SAVORY, MARJORAM, CORIANDER, PICKLING SPICE, PIZZA SEASON, CRUSHED MINT, MUSTARD SEED, CALIFORNIA HERB is beyond me? Those were never even opened!

Took me a while to think of the worst gift because for the past couple of years I have been picking out my gifts but before I was picking out my gifts I think the worst gift DH ever bought me was an electric toothbrush which was a pain in the butt to use. And the best gift would have to be this laptop which I received in August for no apparent reason. Usually I get hand me down items like cell phones, palms, ipods, computers but this time he bought me a new laptop.
From my parents it would have to be a plaid button down shirt (my mother's style) or a pocket book which has all these funky designs on it which, of course, the shirt was given to good will and the pocket book well it's in my closet the one which needs to be decluttered! Sorry can't scrap these as I don't want to hurt my mom's feelings.

One of my strangest gifts, turned out to be one of my best... About 5 years after I was married, the whole family was opening gifts at my in laws house. My BIL's wife and I were told to open our packages together. Inside were several pair of very small, very sexy underwear. We were mortified as she was MIL to both of us... but upon closer inspection, there was a $100 bill pinned to the inside of one of them. During the night, we ended up unwrapping $500 in cash with our gifts. Unfortunately, we haven't seen a Christmas like that since. But we still get the sexy underwear every year, that has turned into a family joke.
Here is my layout using A Cozy Christmas.

Oh Lori, what a funny story! Now you know you can do a layout with all those sexy skivvies if you haven't already! You know you ought to pin a gift card, money, or some other small gift into some Fruit of the Looms for some of the men.
Scrappers, just so you know, Beth and I are not holding a chat on Tuesday, Dec 19th, to allow everyone (and us) to finish up shopping or layouts or what have you! But there is a new challenge for you to peruse; you have a couple of weeks before due date, so we hope you will participate!
