making an overlay??

I'm trying to create an overlay i think. i have a B&W pic of my daughter and her BF. i created another layer of text with the words to a Hannah Montana song that i want to lower the opacity of, but i want the background to be clear, not white. since it is white, when i lower the opacity, it makes the page look foggy. how do i create a see through background with text on it?

When you make a new file, in the little screen that pops up, set your background to transparent. Then add a new layer (Layer-->New-->Layer)
and begin your work on that layer. Hope this helps!

I always use transparent background whenever I create a new file. That way any new layers I create will always be transparent too.
