This poll is only for those of you who make 12.12 pages. How do you print your 12x12 layouts?
If you do another size, we'll catch you later, thanks!

Id like to know this too- Ive just recently converted to 12x12- you can fit so much stuff on a bigger page! No printing yet though! But when I complete my wedding album and then baby albums- I want to print them with the hardbound books offered here at DSP!

I have an Epson 1270 Photo Printer so I print at home, it can print up to A3+.
I print on A3 size Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper or Canon Glossy Photo Paper.
This printer although a few years old now gives excellent photos.

I resize my 12x12 layouts to 8x8 and print them myself... unless it is a special page, then I have it printed professionally.

I have a Canon i9900 so I can print upwards of 13x19 but I just do 12x12 and also 8x8. I print only on Canon paper, both glossy and matte. The results are absolutely fantastic.

I also just purchased an i9900. I didn't know Canon made 12x12 paper. Do you print it edge to edge?

Canon makes 13x19 paper, so I can fit a full 12x12 on there and, if I wanted to, some smaller layouts (like 2 6x6's). I haven't printed a full 13x19 but it says it's full bleed for that size.

I have been printing on 11.6 x 11.6 Epson photo paper which looks like high grade cardstock to me. The output is great but not glossy. Once placed in a page protector you get a glossy look tho. My printer will print borderless but only on certain sizes... I have to fool the printer to get a full print on the 11.6 papers.
I have been looking for some 13 x 19 paper . I was wondering if the Canon paper would work. Sometimes those coated papers only work with the namesake printer for obvious reasons.
Does anyone know. HP doesn't seem to have 13 x 19 photo paper available.

thanks for all the information! I've been wanting a wide printer for a long time! I make my pages in 12x12, but haven't printed any yet. Was thinking of getting some done professionally, but really really want my own printer! lol I have done a few other pages, mostly forthe grandparents in 8x8 or 5x7 and printed those..have an hpdeskjet 5550.. love it for printing pics!
I am just beginning to digital scrapbook. I am using MS Picture It. I've checked with Kinko's regarding printing and they do not accept the .png file format. How can I convert this to .pdf or .jpeg for printing? Or should I change programs or just buy a printer?

HP.com has one of their wide format printers on sale right now. The deskjet 9650 prints up to 13x19. It is an older model with $100 off for $299 plus shipping is free for a now. The only issues I can see is that the color ink is a single cartridge rather than individual and the attachment to print double sided is extra. I've seen the print quality and it seems excellent. It appears that you need to look at printers for home rather than business to get the sale page. Thought I'd share just in case anyone is interested.

Irfanview, which is free, can convert from png to jpeg. I think PIXresizer, also free, which I use to downsize my layouts so I can upload to the gallery (and you can tell which ones I didn't use PIXresizer on because they look bad) will also to a conversion with or without a change in size.
I don't know MS Picture it, but have you tried to Save As and see if it will offer to save as a jpeg? I had one program where the only way you could get a jpeg was to Export. You might try that too.

I love the Epson Super B (13x8) Watercolor Paper. I took a Photoshop Class and saw great prints from Canon, Epson and HP. I have an older 1220 HP large format printer that prints 13x19. I use the manual feed from the back.

I was really interested in reading what everyone has to say on this subject. I really want a new printer that will print a full 12 page! I wrote and asked HP what their future plans were. I was told they don't give out this info!
It looks to me like with all the scrappers out there someone should really be working to get our business! I LOVE my HP 990cse and would love a wide format of equal or better quality. I don't like the reviews that I've read on Amazon about the one they do offer. Really want that individual cartridge bit with GOOD ink too. I hope everyone will attend the chat with the HP rep so they will understand what the possibilities are.
Like "if they build it we will come"!

YES be sure to come and find out all you can about printing 12x12s! and of course companies can't give out future info, or all their competitors would just beat them to the punch every time! :D but joe hesch can tell us all about their current printers and i'm sure it'll be a great chat! hp watches the site, so be sure to enter the print your pages challenge and let them see how much we're printing and need those large format printers! :)

LOL! I didn't mean all their future plans, I am ready to buy a wide format printer & don't want any HP that is on the market. I hate to change brands, but others have more what I want in a printer. I just wanted to know if there is any hope in waiting for new HP. I LOVE the HP I do have, but really want a bigger one.

Hi all,
I must say, I can't imagine NOT printing my pages. I still go back and look at pages I printed over a year ago :o . I have a Canon i9100 and print 12 x 12 pages on Epson's 12 x 12 PremierArt Matte Scrapbook Photo Paper.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=306380&pfp=BROWSE
One day I'm going to try a glossy 12 x 12 paper, but my wife and I have always been partial to matte prints.
That new 8-color Canon i9900 looks like a really nice printer. May have to sell my i9100 on ebay.

We print quite a few photos on 13x19 for framing and hanging and I also like to print my favorite scrapbook layouts. While we have an Epson projector and can view the layouts that way, it's nice to have some coffee table scrapbook albums that are easy to share with friends and family or just enjoy doing a quick review ourselves. We have both an Epson 2200 wide format and an HP 9650 wide format so we've been trying to do cost and paper comparisons. Your information may be very different, but here's what we've come up with.
The HP 9650 does not have separate color ink cartridges. I know HP Joe in the chat said that he thought a single color cartridge is less expensive, I suspect less expensive to manufacture, because our experience is that we do save ink with the Epson separate ink cartridges. Clearly some of the colors get used up much faster than others (especially magenta).
The Epson 2200 with it's seven ink colors has the best quality printing...the HP 9650 blocks up the black colors. However we struggle endlessly with color matching with the Epson and HP's color matching (matches the original file colors) is always perfect with no fooling around with monitor calibration, special print profiles, etc. Another advantage with the HP9650 is that it can do two sided copying (by purchasing the additional attachment). It does sound like it's going to break every time we print, so it seems like it's not as high a quality as the Epson (although it cost less). I have trouble finding things on HP's web site, but it looks like they're coming out with a wide format photo printer with more ink colors and separate cartridges. HP Photosmart 8700, 13x19, 9 separate ink cartridges
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF05a/18972-236251-64340-15100-64340-426170.html
I am disappointed with Epsons' scrapbook paper. It is slightly bigger than 11 1/2", but not 12x12 so it's a little small for the plastic inserts. I think the scrapbook matte finish (at about $2.00 per 12x12 sheet) is not as nice as Epson's enhanced photo matte paper (and at about $1.03 per 13x19 sheet is half the cost and you can also use to print large photos). The scrapbook paper is doublesided, but printing on both sides limits your flexibility in rearranging your albums and there can be some bleed through. If you are OK with spending about $2 per sheet for paper, then I think Epson's premium luster, a gorgeous paper at about $2.30 for a 13x19 sheet, or Epson's premium semi gloss at about $2.58 is another good choice. HP has a premium satin 13x19, which I assume is a semi gloss, at about $2.20 per sheet. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds like it might be a good option. I have tried HP's everyday photo paper and it was so terrible I used it for text printing. Very inexpensive coated ink jet paper had a better finish. Until I try the HP satin, the Epson luster is a beautiful compromise between matte and glossy.
That said, the higher cost is in the inks. That's one reason why I believe the separate ink cartridges are so important. Our tests have resulted in the total printing cost for an 81/2x11 or 8x8 about $2.50 (about .70 of which is for paper) and about $6 for a sheet of 13x19 (about $2.50 is for paper). So I am now creating 12x12 layouts (for digital display) and printing 8x8 to save costs and also the 8x8 albums are nicely sized to keep on the coffee table.
I'm sure other people have different experiences and costs, but I'm sharing ours in case they're useful.

I really appreciate all your information, that's the kind that seems hard to find. I LOVE my hp deskjet 990 cse and would really like to buy a wide format HP. Like you, I wan't entirely satisfied with Joe's answer on the separate cartridges. Don't mind paying a little more up front if I can get a "super printer" that does my bidding without argument". LOL
I am especially thankful for your link to a new HP. Perhaps this is the one I've been waiting for, I will watch and see.
Thanks for all your typing, I like getting opinions from someone who actually uses the equipment.

We save a bundle on ink costs by using Media Street Ink.
http://www.mediastreet.com/
It's an investment up front but well worth it, in our opinion, it's a contiuous flow inking system with each ink color separate. It runs with our Epson and right now I don't remember if it works with other systems or not.
I'm not down by the printer but I'm pretty certain we use the Niagra III system: http://www.mediastreet.com/cgi-bin/tame/mediastreet/n3.tam
We also use Epson papers. I love the Premium semi-gloss that I find the best price on at http://www.superwarehouse.com/ (and they have a flat $10 shipping fee no matter how many boxes you buy so I save and buy a bunch at one time. There shipping is amazing - usually the next day!)
But I also find that the regular Epson Glossy Photo paper (much less money) looks great behind a page protector.
For some lesser projects I even use the Epson paper from Sam's that is really inexpensive. It's flimsy but that doesn't matter in an album and once it is behind the page protector the difference is only noticeable to the trained eye. So as I say, for some types of albums it is just fine.
It's the paper that makes the difference in cost for us but at 12 x 12 using the very cheap paper we figure our pages cost less then a dollar and when using the better paper we are around $2. The paper we use is 13 x 19 so we print 12 x 12 and save the trimmings for doing two 6 x 6 (these make great albums for gifts or for printing some of those artsy layouts that don't need to be really big).
I love the instant gratification and the convenience and ease of doing it at home! I'm really glad we took the plunge!

I had not printed any of my layouts until I bought my Epson 2200 on e-bay a couple of months ago. I am now thinking of making a lot of changes to my layouts, i.e. including more pictures, (they looked so different on my screen)! Anyway, I love it! And of course I can't help but plug where I get my paper from: www.digitalscrapbookpaper.com.

If you can find a Costco in your area, they print 12x12's for $2.99. It's the cheapest way to do it when you consider buying a special printer, ink, and paper.

I experienced the same thing...if I do a layout that looks great on the screen, the proportions aren't right for a 12x12 print...photo is too large, not enough on the page. However, the layout does look great printed as an 8x8. For some layouts I've gone back and modified the layout for a 12x12 (added more journaling and photos and rearranged), for others I'm going to continue to create the layouts in 12x12, but mostly print in 8x8.

 I was looking the threads where experts are talking about 12X12 layout printers. I really would like to have some help before I buy a printer (wich I will do on next week). I have been searching on internet and the printers that I have liked are the canon i9900 and the Epson stylus 2200 but before I buy one or another it will be very helpful to me if someone can give me their experience with one of those printers so I can make a better buy. Thank you

The Epson 2200 has been the choice of most high end amateur photographers and has generally been considered best of class. Like everything digital, though, Epson just came out with some new models and won't be producing the 2200 anymore. Might be a time to get a good buy on it.

Do you have an Epson printer? What Im not so sure about the Epson is because I read that model 1200 is kind of expensive due the ink waste even if you are not using it. Maybe the Epson 2200 fixed this problem. Is it like that?

I print with an Epson 2200. I LOVE IT! The colors are great on a lot of different papers and I find the ink lasts a reasonable amount of time. Epson came out with some new models recently so a lot of professionals are dumping perfectly good ones on e-bay, (which is where I got mine). The Canon uses dye ink and the Epson uses pigmented/dye ink which means the ink is a bit more archival than the canon, (not sure of specifics) and, with the Epson, you have the option of using photo or matte black ink, (an option I really like as I tend to switch back and fourth).
And one more thing. I believe that a lot of paper companies, (like Hawk Mountain Papers -www.digitalscrapbookpaper.com) offer profiles for Epson printers but I am not sure about Canon.
I hope this helps. I am a huge Epson fan as that is all we use at Hawk Mountain Papers.

Yes, I have the Epson 2200 and it makes beautiful prints. I've printed 12x18 photos and sold them from that printer. I've not heard anything about ink waste when not using it. I sometimes don't use it for a couple weeks, but haven't had problems. Right now all the archival ink jet printers are really expensive to print.

If I resize my 12x12 to 8x8, could walmart print them on 8x10 paper? I know I'll have a 2 inch excess, but would it look right or would their printers automatically stretch my 8x8 to an 8x10 size? I live in a small town so Costco and others aren't an option. Even Kinko's is a half hour away (not that I would pay $10 a 12x12 LO to print anyway. ) Wal-Mart is about it here.
just resize your canvas to 8x10 and save as a big jpg file. they won't stretch it like that. My sister fills in the extra canvas with black if she's not going to trim them (centers the layout and puts in a 4x6 album for a brag size)

Hmm..Is Sam's Club the same as Costcos? Someone told me they were the same. I have a Sam's and maybe I can print them there..I do not have a wide printer and so my layouts are on my comp :(

They are similar - but not the same.
Wal-mart owns Sam's Club, and you can print photos there. It's slightly cheaper than WM, but not as cheap as Costco. Sam's and Costco are not affiliated.
My closest Costco is an hour away, so I'm not printing there, and I won't pay the shipping they charge ($1.99 PER layout! no way!) So I'm experimenting with other printers to see what I like.

I have an Epson 1280 and I htink I just figured out how to get it to print full bleed 12 x 12s. (I told the printer I was using 13 x 19 paper BORDERLESS and in PORTRAIT mode.) Take the center off and make margins down to 0. I am going to try making the top edge 1/8 inch lower next time because I had an 1/8 inch border on one side.
I use Epson's 12 x 12 Scrapbooking matte paper. LOVE the feel!

If your local Costco has a printer that can do 12" wide, then this is the best way in my opinion to go.
If you want accurate colors, buy this very inexpensive monitor calibrator:
http://www.pantone.com/products/products.asp?idArea=2&showNav=121&idProduct=103
http://www.pantone.com/products/images/prod_MEU101_dk.gif
AROUND 89 american dollars
this is a good tool to ensure the colours on your monitor are exactly what they should look like.
Our Costco only can do up to 8x12", so we go with 8x8". I put the 8x8" layout on a medium grey background of 8x12". (acually make the layout 7.9"x7.9" to allow for the small amount they cut off)
once we get them back from Costco we just trim it down to 8x8"
I am very fussy out matching colours, and unless you want to pay way more money for a pro, you can't beat Costco, even with your own printer.
Costco uses professional paper that would cost more for me to buy then costco printing the whole thing.
Like I said, if you buy the above monitor calibrator (or something better) you will be amazed by Costco results.
cheers

It's been mentioned already, but I've been getting beautiful prints at costco. They have a 12x18 size on which I can print 1 12x12 and two 6x6s or two 9x9s and I print the 8x8 on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet and trim.

If anyone is interested in using an online service I just found a great one. Got my first order back yesterday and they are fantastic!! I uploaded my 12 x 12 to sbtoshare.com (Scrap Books to Share), and they shipped back UPS. I selected the shiny cardstock. They were $1.75 each and then there is a $5.00 shipping charge. I sent 15 in my first order so the shipping charge had less impact then if I drove to Kinkos and the quality is just wonderful!!
I'm putting together another order today.

Also, they are prompt about getting in touch and actually send an invoice, which is a better business model. They are my new printers of choice!! And cheaper too!

I just received my sample from Scrapbooks to share and I did not think my pictures were as clear as they should have been? Has anyone else noticed this? I want to use them because the service and prices are great but I was a bit dissapointed with my pictures -- the elements etc. looked good.
I noticed it as well, but then I realized my photo was taken in low light at high ISO, and therefore had a lot of noise. I guess I didn't choose a very good example for a sample! I've decided to place one order with them so I can get a variety of photos printed before I decide for sure.

Brenda,
I just got the Epson R1800 as an early Christmas present. At Epson dot com it was only $390 because they had (maybe still do) have a $100 rebate, free shipping, and DH found a coupon code that still worked online. He just googled Epson.com coupon codes and checked a few.
I currently have an Epson 1280 that prints large format, but not borderless. i really like Epson so I decided to stick with them. I read a lot a reviews about the Canon printers and they seem to have problems about a year down the road with lines and many people (where ever it was I was reading) said that Canon wasn't helping them figure out a solution. That's a big no no in my book. Just my 2 cents....
i haven't hooked up the new R1800 yet...waiting for Christmas to do that. (I have to wait for something, don't I?)

Hey, im looking to buy a printer 12x12, i was looking for some printers and i lovedd the epson R1800, the price is a little high, but from what I understand the quality is great and i can print in both sides of the paper with the special premium paper.
Do anyone of you have it? How about the epson 1400 is it good enough?
Which one is better?
ohh I also wanted to ask if the ink last longs, like for how many papers does it lasts.
Thanks!

I have 2 R1800's and absolutely love them. It's $1.63 per side to print a full 12x12, that is including the two sided paper and ink.
The R1400 is awesome too. I have seen it in action. The inks are different but still great.
Because there are 8 cartridges when its time to replace them all it gets quite pricey, but you don't have to replace them too often. Some colors you use more of than others and its nice to not have to replace more than that one.

I have the Epson 2200, and found I needed a few custom profiles for it.
I also use the Epson's 12 x 12 PremierArt Matte Scrapbook Photo Paper, i get it from Adorama, and it is a true 12 X 12 from them (red package instead of white).
Using the correct printer profiles makes all the difference in the world!!!

I have tried many of the online printers, includeing scrap books to share, and I have found that Pure Print Designs has the best quality and turn around. Here is their website: http://www.pureprintdesigns.com/pureprintdesigns/. Their prints are only$2.25 per page and they do a great job! They only offer one kind of paper but it is really nice paper and the prints are beautiful. I have been very pleased with them and would definitly recommend them.

I'm creating and professionally printing all 12x12 as I'm trying to use up all the 12x12 albums I bought from my traditional/paper scrapbooking days.

Glad I found this thread! I'm at the point of printing some of the pages I've been doing now and wondering how to start doing them from home rather than always sending them out. I found that Costco does 12x12, but I'd really like to find a printer and the paper to do it at home from now on. I'll have to go back and see what everyone has. Any idea on the cost for those that have the printers at home? Where have you found the paper this size?

I forgot to ask in my last post, out of those that have the printers at home, do any of them have network capability? I love not having to have my laptop plugged into the printer (since I usually am in one room scrapping and where we keep the printers is another room).

I too would recommend pureprintdesigns.com. Great price at only 2.25/ 12x12 page and flat rate $6 shipping. Great quality and paper. I have gotten over 80 pages printed though them and plan to do more. Just have to find the time!!!

Try adorama dot com...or ebay
Yes this printer can be networked we're doing it through a server, but it can also be mapped through another PC
Hope these answers help...

I print my 12x12s at home. I have the Epson Photo R1800 (think they have now replaced it). I just bought it a couple of months ago and got a great deal on it. Epson makes 12x12 glossy scrapbook paper. I'm loving how the prints come out! Just excellent! And I finally found some frames so now I can finally cover my office walls with them!

I purchased my Epson 2200 on e-bay for less than $250. There are deals to be had. I hope you find one! Hawk Mountain Papers offers packs of 25 12"x12" photo paper or 50 12"x12" matte, archival, (called Sparrowhawk) for about $30, delivered. I am glad to hear about being able to network it! I will be working on that right away!

Does anyone know where to get the 12 x 12 glossy scrapbook paper that Nkeevers mentions? I look on there website but only find the gloss in 8.5 x 11.
I too print at home on the Canon I9900- and am currently using Projet semi gloss 13 x 19's and cut them down- since the paper is double sided its great and less bulky in my books, but would really like a glossy 12 x 12

I get mine from Epson. They have the glossy 12x12 paper.
I have another question. I've always been told that you should use the paper of the printer you are using. I see a lot of you don't. Do these really work as well as not using the recommended papers by the printer?

As a third party paper vendor, I can assure you that you can use whatever paper you want. You can get papers from many different companies but make sure you know what setting to use and I always advocate using profiles. Hawk Mountain offers profiles in many printer/paper combinations and if we don't have them, we will make them for you for free.

Are the papers less expensive than they would be if I used my Epson paper.
So is the website hawkmountain.com? Because I will check it out.

Here is a breakdown of our paper, (they are less expensive):
Sharpwing Luster and Glossy are photo inkjet papers 12"x12" 25ea $22
Sparrowhawk double sided archival matte inkjet paper 12"x12" 50ea $26
You can find the 12"x12" sizes on www.digitalscrapbookpaper.com. Our sister site is www.hawkmtpaper.com. Contact me on or off list anytime. I am excited to see some interest in paper! Amy

Does anyone use the Epson stylus 1400? I was about to order it thru Staples but they are out of stock and then I thought I should check with some "experts" first! lol
I found the epson scrapbook paper thru ritzcamera.com for about $22 for 20 sheets w/ shipping and using paypal.

I don't print my own 12x12, I only have an 8 1/2 x 11 printer. But it is a good photo printer. Even though it is an HP, I don't use their paper. You can use whatever photo paper you want. I think the real reason the printer companies say to use their paper is for one reason only, they want to make more money and buy their paper. Find a good quality paper, but look for a good price. I found double sided printing paper from Staples, and it was buy one get one free, good price and you can print on both sides and it won't show through, so you albums can be thinner. I resize my 12x12 to 8x8 on my paper.

I guess I didn't understand what my husband was trying to tell me. I need one that has built in WiFi and/or Ethernet. Do any of the Epson printers that have been mentioned have this function?

Pooh, there is an Epson that has Wi Fi, because I have been looking at them. It isn't a wide format printer, though, if that is what you are looking for. The one I am looking at is about $199 but I don't remember the model number right now.

I have had my wide format printer now for about a month and have yet to use it :( I really need to get back into the mood to scrap. I need to find where to order the paper for it. We don't have much here in Alaska, just Office Depot and Office Max as far as major chain stores go. The printer is an HP printer, its in the B8550. Just figured I would post the question again about where to buy paper and what kind do people recommend?

I have an HP printer and have used HP photo paper in the past. However, it is glossy. I ordered a satin paper from Staples (staples brand) that I have been using with my HP that I really like. Just got a WiFi Epson 800 this week-end, but don't have it set up yet.

Bocca, do you know the model number or anything like that of the Staples Brand satin paper that you like? I saw a satin paper on the HP site and the description sounds like it would be good for scrapbooking so I am glad you reponded!

I used Staples Photo Supreme photo paper, Satin, but I print 8 x 8 on 8.5 x 11. It is $32 for 50 sheets, but when I have bought it I ordered when they had two for one specials. I'm sure if you can find an HP satin finish, it will work well with your printer.
