View Full Version : PSP new tutorial: Diffuse Glow
Check out my new tutorial on how to get a Diffuse Glow filter in PSP that's so popular for PS users on montages for that glowing effect

The tutorial example is fairly subtle, but play around with the settings on steps 2 and 3 and see how dramatic it can be!

I am new and don't want to step on any toes, but there is a new Free filter out that also does this, highkey and much much more that I thought I'd share the link with you all. I am pretty sure it will work in Photoshop and I know it works in PaintShopPro.

very cool! Thanks for sharing. We all have our toes safely under our desks, so never any worries there :)
wish I'd known about that filter before! But I was including it in my PSP class and couldn't use any third party filters  I use them for my own work, but then have to find alternatives for classes
I just love this technique and totally overuse it

Its a great tutorial and nice to know these tricks for PSP alone without 3rd party filters. thanks Emma! :)
Val, do you use 3rd party filters? I know you bought EyeCandy, but do you use any free ones?
I have loaded a bunch into PSP, commercial and free, but rarely use them. Not sure if it's because my aim is to teach and have to know the stock filters, or just because I feel like I'm "cheating". If I was selling elements, I'd be all over the 3rd party because anything to make it look good, yk?
Anyway, I used to hate the PSP stock filters, but now that I've discovered the presets...whoa! I'm loving it! Even the Bevel filter is my friend now, and it was my nemesis before :)
So who loves doing things with PSP alone, like the layering process for diffuse glow, stock filters, or third party free or paid?

I have LOTS of free filters, but I don't use them all regularly. I really love the virtual photographer. I don't use PSP bevel filter because it frustrates me. I only use Eyecandy for bevels. I also have Super blade Pro and it is good for metals and textures. I use Jama 3d from time to time, but havent since you gave us the tip on using gradients for the corrugated texture, which I like better. I would love to get more familiar with PSP tools or haveing a place to trade presets like adobe does with layer styles. I still like hand painting alot of the highlights myself for ribbons and curled edges and such.

I'm having a hard time installing it...Any advice? Emma, when can I sign up for your classes and do you teach this filter thing?
TIA,Jess
Jess, no this filter isn't in the class, just a free tutorial here.
What are you trying to install?

Emma, thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunately it seems all the pictures don't work. Is it just me? All the links to them seem broken????
Virtual photographer I use all the time. I recently bought Eye Candy 4000 which is really great. I don't think that the bevel filter is so bad in PSP, really. Why do you think so, Valerie?
My husband gave me Auto FX Tint, tone and colour and Mystical lighting as a pre-x-mas gift (rather generous, huh?). Now I'm trying to learn how to use them and find them extremely difficult. It takes me forever to figure out how to do it, but am determined to succeed :) .
Sometimes I like 3D Shadow from Lokas Software for shadows for text, which is a free filter. But most of my free filters are just sitting there doing nothing....

Hey, Rikki! Good to see you :)
Tutorial is all fixed now, I've been housecleaning a little and broke some links on accident.
I don't use a lot of filters. I thought when I first learned PSP that I'd need to, but I've actually been doing really well with the stock ones. Except the dreamy effect, hence the tutorial
I know there are a lot of plugins that do the same thing, though. Some great ones mentioned so far! Keep 'em coming!

I can't get the bevels in the PSP filter to do what I want. Maybe if I had some patience I could sit and play with them and come up with something I like. Eye candy just seems easier, if the bevel isn't just right, I adjust the sliders and away I go. I am sure I am missing something easy.
I love virtual photographer! I can't believe its a freebie. Nice early xmas gift! wow

Emma, I noticed in one of your posts on this thread that you have problems installing filters into PSP.
May I tell you what I do to manage filters in PSP, first I never install them into the program. I have a folder in My Documents and in that folder I have a sub folder for each set of filters. This is for PSP 7. Once I have them in the folder I go to File/Preferences/File Locations/ Plug-ins, folder 1 will point to the plug-ins that come with PSP, then in the folder 2 browse to where my plug-ins are in documents and enable that path, once you have done this the first time you just add sub folders and PSP will see the filters.
On the file preference page for plug-ins you put a tick in the first three squares, allowing filters etc. These instructions may be different for PSP 9 , will let you know when I get my PSP 9 program, still waiting for the store to get it in. The only things I have added to PSP is gradients and masks, every thing else is managed the same way as as I do the filters, when I get PSP 9 I am hopeing that it is going to work the same way and all of my filters will work OK.
Pam.
Thanks, Pam! Yes, it works the same way in v9, the little time I had the trial version I installed my plugins exactly that way.
My problem is more that I'm used to Photoshop's layer styles, which make a lot of filters unecessary, but PSP needs them more. So I can install and use them, I just lack familiarity. And since I learned PSP to teach it, I have to be familiar with the stock features. I can't teach a class and then use EyeCandy, and I stay away from free filters too because I don't know if they'll be available next week or a year from now.
For my own graphics, I'm trying to learn the filters and plugins more, so I have more versatility to create.
Thanks for the tips! Knowing how to set the paths and file locations is really important.
Does PSP7 have a My PSP Files folder? I put everything in there, presets, plugins, etc and PSP looks in there automatically. It was My PSP8 Files, but when I installed v9 it made a new one just called My PSP Files, so I moved everything into it, and v8 finds them just fine too. The folder stayed even after I uninstalled v9 after it expired
Thanks, ggk, for pointing out this Virtual Photographer filter to me. I had downloaded it awhile back, but never used it!
I installed in PSP9 using the method Pam described (my File Preferences), and also installed my EyeCandy.
The effect like the Dreamy Photo tutorial I wrote is called Glamour, and the Shadowlab in EyeCandy is so versatile! Had some plugin fun :)
I do like the freedom of the tutorial method, it's more customizable, but on the plugin one I just used the Levels adjustment to get the right contrast after I ran the filter.
Thanks!

Hi :) I'm trying to learn new things and am so happy when I C these tut's but I've tried to open that link in two different windows and it doens't work.
Could you re-post it, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Mary
Thanks for pointing that out: I did some housecleaning on the server and didn't realize I needed to update the link. I updated the one below, and here it is again
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/PSP_DreamyPhotoEP.shtml
The link on the main tutorials page is correct, it self-updates when I move stuff around on the server
Have fun! Have you tried the Virtual Photographer yet? Some fun stuff in there too
