I'm so tired of The Font Thing I'm willing to pay for a better font organizing software. Any recommendations of those you like?

I tried Fontinizer shareware, but it can't see the new Open Type .oft files, and neither can TFT. Are there any that can see .oft files?

AMP font viewer can see otf's. I have put a link in your font thread. It's free and I prefer it to TFT. It can see installed and uninstalled and you can put fonts into categories just like TFT.

Thanks for the link! I installed it to check it out, and I have a few questions: is there a way to see all fonts whether installed or not, so I can browse to choose something? That way I can use it if it's installed, or install it if I want, but to see them all at a glance would be really nice. Also, can I include all subfolders so I can see all fonts in all my organized subfolders? I also like seeing multiple fonts at once, but it seems that screen only shows installed fonts, or maybe I just can't install from that multiple screen? On the uninstalled fonts it just shows the folder location and file name, and not the font title, so I can't find things easily or quickly.

Thanks for any help!

No problems.

regarding seeing all fonts at once: I actually have all mine printed in a folder,(actually moving onto the 2nd folder now) so I haven't tried that. I will go and have a look and see if it can do the things you want. BBL to let you know.

Okay. Sorry it's taken so long.
I have tried to do what you want but I don't think it will work. Unless you have ALL your uninstalled fonts in 1 folder or disc, you just may be able to do it. I have my fonts in lots of folders and I can't see more than 1 folder at a time.

assuming you do have them all in the one folder, click uninstalled tab -> then click options -> click view folder and installed fonts. [this may take a while depending on how many fonts you have in the folder] -> tada..You will now be able to see all the fonts. Although...I probably wouldn't reccommend if you have "lots and lots" of fonts. It would probably take too long or could freeze up.

What I have done, is install each of my folders temporarily -> print the multi-view list [front/back of paper] and then uninstall the folder. Each font has the folder location printed above it, the name, and the font name written in the font style.
This way, I just flick through my folder( just plastic sleeves), find a font I like, see the location above it and go directly to that folder on my disc.

I have 'lots' of fonts, maybe not as many as some people, but definately over 4000. This is working for me really well. However, if you want it all done by a program, then AMP may not be for you.

Good luck finding a solution, and I hope I have helped somewhat.

Cheers

I'll be watching this thread with interest. As a newbie, I'm just learning about all the wonderful fonts out there, and had tried TFT. Every time I tried to install a font, it froze, and I had to close it. When I opened it, the font would be there, but try to install several fonts...!

I just installed the beta version of FontAgent Pro for windows. So far I like it, but it says that the beta version expires on March 31, and I haven't taken the time to research more. For those using Macs--it's out there!

Hope more people join in this thread with suggestions for this utility--like you, Emma, I might be willing to pay for something that is proven and WORKS!

(Emma--when I get home from work tonight, I'll try downloading your new font and see if it works in FontAgent--I'm on my lunch now, no time!)

Here's what I do in AMP Font Viewer. I have a My Fonts folder with subfolders for different types of fonts. In AMP click the "Not Installed Fonts" tab at the top and browse to the folder you want to look through. Then click the button at the bottom that says "View folder/Install list of fonts". It will open up a new window for you with all the fonts in that folder. From there you can change the options for viewing, install, move to different folders, etc. And with that separate window open I think all those fonts will be available in your program.
Does that help?

Emma

hmmmm...I have one folder for all d/l fonts, but my own fonts are in a subfolder. i categorize them in the software, so no need for separate folders to browse. However, having my own in a folder makes it a lot easier to find and edit as needed. So having a view all subfolders would be great! TFT is wonderful if it showed the oft fonts and not so many bugs!
deal breaker features for me are
view subfolders
view multiple samples in the text I type myself
categories
view installed and uninstalled together
show oft fonts

I think printing would be hard since every time I d/l a new font my print out would be outdated. I don't print stuff, not even my own classes. Every time I fix a typo, add a screen shot, etc, you get my point. I don't know if AMP will work, but so far it's the only one that shows OFT that I've tried. Makes me wish I could write software!!!

KrystalW

Well, maybe you could e-mail TFT peoples and tell them to get with the program, and have their software see otf's...lol It's worth a try. AMP seems like it wouldn't be good for you, only to see the fonts. Maybe someone else has a program they can help you with.

Sorry couldn't be more help,

Emma

TFT is obsolete, the creator will not even reply to emails regarding it, does not support or do upgrades. I could try to email the AMP people and see if they'd consider these suggestions on an upgrade. But again, I'd be willin gto pay for one that had it all!

Okay, I have been scouring the internet..I have found one. You have to pay for it though. But I have just downloaded the trial, and it does just what you want.
You can search for fonts by searching a particular drive, you can click if you want to search sub-folders too. I just made all the fonts that I have installed into a worklist. Then went to the find fonts section. Asked it to search my disc, with the click subfolders search too, and search worklist.

This then placed every font into the one screen. I then added to the worklist. It removes duplicates. Now I have a saved worklist of every font that I have. Now I know that I have 6872 fonts. (with more to un-zipp)

You can type your own text sample to see if it looks good, or use their samples. It gives a character map too.

Here is the link.Font Expert 2006 (http://www.proximasoftware.com/fontexpert/index.html)

It is alot of cash...but it's all I could find that will do what you want. I am even considering buying the full version...but it's even more AU$$.

here's a free one recommended on my fontmaking group that's free, views OTF fonts, and you can view multiple fonts if you Ctrl-A, or just preview some side by side by Ctrl-clicking each to look at. I can make categories etc. So far seems to do everything I want at a great price! :p

Will let you know if I run into any issues!

How did I miss this thread  it's just what I was thinking about myself - all these zillions of fonts that I have downloaded over time and I only have HP font magic or windows to view them - HP is OK but soooo slow to view them (I have a lot). If I have one gripe about PS7, it's not being able to see the style of font in the DDM, I have generally gone into word and checked them out there before deciding on which one/s to use. Thanks guys for all this usefull information - I'm off to try a couple

They re-upped the beta test so I'm still using FontAgent Pro, but haven't taken it to it's full potential of what it can do--I get sidetracked scrapping and restoring photos! However, I do like its preview feature--you can choose to look at an alphbet, or a "paragraph", or write your own. You can also preview your font in all the sizes, which I find helpful if I want something really small.

I can also "turn on" fonts, so that if I want to test just a few in my PSE4 on my layout, I don't have to scroll through the several hundred (yes, I know, I'm way behind you more experienced font freaks!) that are stored in the program.

I'll keep watching this thread--I hadn't seen one that was mentioned.

I tried main type...it didn't do what I needed. I will look into the free one tonight...the price definately agrees with me too. Hopefully, it will do all that Font Expert does...as that is what I got used to during my trial. Thanks for the link, Emma.

PS CS 2 and PSE 4 have WYSIWYG font list now, and you can change the size of the preview. It helps a lot with installed fonts, but to view uninstalled a font manager is the only way to go!

Hello Ladies,
I popped over to see how things were going.

About fonts -
Did you know that ACDSee Photo Manager allows you to view & organize your fonts?

And ACDSee also allows you to change the sample text of your font (http://digiscrapinfo.com/wordpress/?p=57) so you can view them when you're searching the perfect font.

ANDDDD the biggest news is that ACDSee Photo Manager allows you to use Uninstalled Fonts in your scrapbooking program (http://digiscrapinfo.com/wordpress/?p=71). That way you don't have to install all of them (because some of the large ones are hard to view in the pull down menu & aren't used often) :yahoo:

Oh and do you need more fonts? We have a thread in our forum with a comprehensive list of site offering free fonts. (http://digiscrapinfo.com/wordpress/?p=74)

And ACDSee Photo Manager also offers the ultimate organizing solution for your digital scrapbooking supplies including white png's. You can download a trial and our tutorials are available here. (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/dsiwiki/ACDSee_Photo_Manager)

ACDSee is giving away free software in a drawing for National Scrapping Day. Registration for prizes goes until May 15th if you'd like to join! (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/dsiwiki/ACDSee_Tour) And they have some seriously sweet prizes like a portable EHD & memory purses too.

(And I love smileys too! :twins: Heidi & I are available to answer questions.)

Linotype font Viewer is doing an awesome job for me: I've been using it for several weeks now! The ONLY problem I've had is to view multiple samples I have to Ctrl-A to select them all, then I have to click the actual font in the list to install it, or it tries to install all the selected fonts. Then I have to Ctrl-A and page down to resume where I was viewing. BUT it has a WYSIWYG font list! So I can see the tiny previews all at once, which is a nice feature. So other than seeing multiple samples WITHOUT selecting them all, it does everything I want. It's not buggy like TFT, and its' free, and it views the Open Type fonts that are becoming more popular. Thanks!

I have solved my problem in Linotype with Ctrl-A to view samples of all the fonts then having to go hunt down the one I want to install: just double click the preview to open a big preview dialog, check the Activate box, and close the dialog. Continue scrolling down the previews and install more to your heart's content!

just made some collections for the first time, like Script, Dingbats, just Ctrl-click all the fonts you want and drag them to the side panel under New Collection or whatever you name it, and it's that easy.

I love this program :)

okkkkkkk, I just read your posting about Font expert 2006. Should I get this one?
I have win xp with its regular font folder. I too, am willing to pay for organizing my fonts, so please tell me which one to get. Also can I then put all of those installed windows xp fonts (which I don't like) into a subfolder so I don't have to look at them each time?

Very confused here and asking too many questions.

Hi Krys, do you still use the Font Expert ? are you satisfied with it? can you actually move those stupid fonts out of the win xp font folder and keep them separate in Font Expert to avoid having them show up each time?

Hello Emma,
just to let you know that I have taken some time to cruise on the internet and the linotype font thingy has been pulled off the shelf or so they say. I wrote to Germany and what I must have downloaded was the Mac Version! No wonder I had problems. Anyway, I cannot find it for download. Only for Mac.

Soooooo, I guess I will take ACDSee. Vers. 7 is FREE, but is it any good?
Does anyone here recommend vers. 7 or is it better to get vers. 10 ?

GOOD MORNING Emma,

Late last night (2 a.m.) I found a font manager which looks great. It's called Printer's Apprentice for $25 and seems perfect. It does everything you want it to do with fonts. Available at this website: www.loseyourmind.com and worth looking into.

Thank you for the link to linotype, I will keep it just in case this one does not work out. Right now I have the trial version for 15 days.

I also downloaded ACDSee vers. 10 Photo Manager and I think I can begin to understand why some of you 'LOVE" it. It looks like I might love it too. Again right now trial version, but I can play around with my kits and organize them - finally.
The only annoying problem is that it interferes with PSE. All my files or photos (layouts) that are in PSE are now opened by ACDSee though I can right click on them and open them in PSE. But we shall see. I will keep you all informed because if anyone feels the way I do with tiring yourself out organizing page kits etc. it's worth knowing about.

Must get my breakfast, but thought I would let you all know.
Have a wonderful morning.

Hi Carlaless, pls. could you tell me where I can find the option to remove a person or object from a background? like in PSE it's called 'Magic Extractor'? I saw it somewhere in ACDSee Photo Editor but cannot find it. It actually looked better than what PSE produced with it.

Hi Sabina - unfortunately I don't use ACDSee Photo Editor only Photo Manager. Hopefully someone else can answer your question. In the mean time, you can always go over to DigiScrapInfo (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/dsiwiki) and post a question in their forums. The boards are monitored very well and you may get a faster answer. -c-

Hello, I just re-installed ACDSee and I am holding my breath. I think it is working. I hope......
thank you though for the link, I shall keep it just in case. I must also say that ACDSee has a great support system - better than Adobe anytime. I still like using PSE 5 for my LO, but who knows, I might even like the Photo Editor from ACD. But so far so good with my Photo Manager. I am having fun right now organizing.

By the way the organizing file from Liz for ACDSee is great.

Are you using PSE for editing or also ACDSee? I had a problem tonight with my psd file and started looking at my ACDSee Editor and lol, it looks even better than PSE 7, haha.
