This is the weekly challenge for T42.

The past week we focused on black and white photos and the winner of this weeks contest was Greensleaves for her lovely page Archway (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=171494&cat=2621)- congratulations Jill, as soon as I have my next item ready for the store you will receive it to try out before it is on the shelf :)

This week we introduce a touch of colour to our photos - some example to inspire you -

Although it looks difficult, its really a very simple technique if you use a layer based program. The way I do it in Photoshop:

~ Open the photo you want to use and SAVE IT AS A COPY, don't work on the original.
~ Duplicate the layer, so you have the same photo on layer 1 and layer 2.
~ Change the top layer to b&w (or sepia).
~ Put a layer mask on this layer, click the little layer mask icon on the bottom of the layers palette. If you are using a program which does not have masks, skip this step - if you have masks use them, it makes the process so much easier!
~ Now, working on the b & w layers mask (click on it to be sure you are using the mask NOT the layer) and using a soft brush and BLACK paint away the areas that you want to be coloured - the hat the scarf, the eyes.... If you make a mistake, use white to paint the b & w back.
~ If you don't have masks, use your eraser to erase the b & w layer to reveal the colour below, but work slowly and carefully, erasing is final and cannot be undone if you go too far.
~ Once you are finished and happy you can save your masterpiece as a .psd file so you can come back to it later if you wish.
~ To use your new photo, flatter the layers and treat like any other photo.

I did find a tutorial for DIP here (http://digitalscrapbookplace.com/university/tutorials/dip_bwwcolor_as.shtml).

I am sure there are many other ways to do this - please post here if you have other ideas - we'd love to hear!

I look forward to a gallery full next week :) the winner will recieve a new product to test, from me, rules are simple - for T42 you MUST use my products from the store (not freebies) - plase give the store link in your description.

Good luck :)

Wow, thanks for the instructions Meryl! They worked beautifully in PSP! Here is my layout using Forget Me Not. It accents the baby's blue eyes.

I'm sorry I can't make this chat, but it's in the middle of my work day.

That mini tutorial at the end of the chat was put to use straight away. As Chi Chi said- it works well in PSP.
Meryl- could you please say if it is ok to use your freebies if bought kits are used too? I have used both in this LO, but will do another if it doesn't fit the rules:)

I couldn't wait to do this one, which is partly why it is so early for a change. That's my DH in the foreground.

Ooh, this was fun! This technique makes the pages look so cooL! : )

My LO is called Monarch and it's here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=174042&cat=2621).
These are my kids releasing a Monarch Butterfly they raised for a homeschool project. At first I just colored the butterfly in the large picture, but it wasn't enough, so I colored some of the flowers also.

I used the same concept in another LO for a different challenge that turned out really nice as well. You can see it here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=174043&cat=500&ppuser=81914), if you're interested.

Have a great day!

I rarely use this technique and have to regret about it every time I see another great LO with selective coloring on the photo.

I can't believe I never realized this chat wasn't on Tuesday, for some reason I thought it was and since I have to work every Tuesday, I didn't ever check again. This week I happened on the thread and was delighted to see I was wrong, so hopefully I will remember to come on Thursday. At any rate, it is late and I am rambling, so here is my b/w photo that I ran through VP and then selectively colored :) Thanks Meryl for the perfect kit to go with my pics, I may just sit and stare at my LO all night long, I can almost smell the sea breeze!

Here's my entry in the selective colouring challenge. I hate that I can't make the T42 chats but it's even more in the middle of the night now we've finished daylight saving here!

My entry for the selective coloring challenge. I am still searching for the keyword for Buttered Sage Add On, but will add it when I find it. I can find Buttered Sage but not the add on.
