Fulltime RV and I will be at Sleeping Bear Dunes, but don't have the date worked out yet. She and her hubby will be camp hosts for 2 months. We need to start getting our reservations in soon. I plan on picking a week-long period that just HAPPENS to be during the convention so we can sneak away. It will be a long drive, but shorter than driving from home.

You will notice our camper with the half Michigan State Green and White and half Florida State Blue and Orange. Of course we will also need to have a U of M Maize and Blue stripe down the middle.

Hey, Margie...with the BB championships coming up how about another week of Blue and Orange colors for the site???

Laura -
I don't think getting off for a few days toward the end of July is going to be a problem, but not sure I can take a whole week. Are you planning to drive your camper to Grand Rapids or leave it and the boys at Sleeping Bear? Or leave both campers and both guys at Sleeping Bear?

Oh I'm in! And I just live in Detroit. I can't believe my good luck. I was hopeless yesterday, I couldn't find anyone or anything online. But I was born and raised in Ohio, so I always root for Ohio state, like tonight!! Florida's won several times I think. Anyway, I'm in for sure, I think, it is pretty far out. I always think I'll go to the grand rapids scrapbook show when I miss the one here in Detroit. Love to meet everone, But I don't have a laptop computer. I'll have to work on that one. Barbara Hiland

I am SO excited! This is only a couple of hours away from me! And I will be there with my maize and blue on since I am an U of M alum! :~)

Margie: Sleeping Bear Dunes is up by Traverse City and it's a great place to take the kids. I am sure there are some camping site nearby, I just don't know the names of them right now. Another great place to go camping in Michigan is Interlocken which is just south of Traverse City. It's a well known music camp and they have a HUGE campground but at the music camp during the summer, they usually have concerts going on. I spent a few summers camping up there. If you are looking for more Michigan ideas, let me know! Western and Northern Michigan is just BEAUTIFUL during the summer with so much to do!

There are two campgrounds in Sleeping Bear - one with full hookups and one more primitive one. We'll be in the primitive from mid June until just after Labor day.

Beth - what other cool things are there to do in the area besides the obvious ones? Any wonderful restaurants? Bike trails? Hiking trails? Etc?

Ave you ever been to the Double JJ Ranch in Rothbury (near Muskegeon)? It's a dude ranch with a kids area and a golf course, they have tons of activities going on during the day and horse to ride and when I went there for a weekend, there was a Rodeo on Friday nights. I've been there twice and have had a blast. I am hoping to take my family there in the future. Also, many of the cities on the west coast of Michigan are just beautiful--Grand Haven, West Haven, Holland, Saugatuck. Traverse City of course has TONS of stuff to do including the big Cherry Festival in the beginning of July. They also have a lot of wineries to go wine tasting in the Leelenau Pennisula and Mission Pennisula. Regarding Grand Rapids, I don't any specific ideas. I know there is a amusement park near Muskegeon (Michigan Wonderland). But I don't know any bike trails or hiking trails other than I remember hiking up the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes until I couldn't hike anymore!!! :~)

I hope this was helpful.

No, we haven't been to the Double JJ Ranch. Our "baby" will be 39 this summer so we'll probably pass on a place kids would like. LOL! We will take your advice and check out some of the cities you mentioned though. Thanks so much.

I've heard that people have had to be rescued because they overestimated their ability to get back up the Sleeping Bear dune. Must be quite a climb!

I'm quite new to Digital Scrapbooking, but I LOVE Photoshop Elements. In fact I teach people how to use it! I am hoping to come to this, but I don't have a laptop yet either...gives me something to save for!

Anyway, I live in Grand Rapids and there is a lot to do around here. Michigan Adventure is the theme park in Muskegon. Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is absolutely beautiful. For history buffs, Gerald R Ford was buried at his museum downtown earlier this year. Holland, Grand Haven and South Haven have beautiful beaches (Holland's is a bit nicer of the 3) and cute shops. Holland and Grand Haven have light houses. There is a ton of shopping, both regular and outlet in the area. If you like baseball, there is a minor league team here, the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Our favorite "local" restaurants are:
Downtown:
San Chez--tapas bistro...even my super picky husband loves it!
One Trick Pony or the Cottage Bar--good sandwiches and dinners
Bistro Bella Vita--Just good food!

Area:
Melting Pot--who can resist chocolate fondue?
Pietro's Backdoor Pizzaria--great pizza and the best homemade ranch dressing!
Joe's Chicago Pizza--Great salads and pizza

I'm sure I'll think of more. If anyone needs any more info I'll keep checking the forum.

I'm kind of a new digital scrapper and am a bit confused about the FAQ section of what to bring to the crops. Are the crops for combining digital and paper scrapbooking? Also, is it necessary to attend all days of the convention?

Amanda
05-12-2007, 07:42 PM
They have a "paper" crop and a "digital" crop but if you want do to hybrid pages 'm sure that would be fine too!
You do not need to attend the convention in order to attend the crop.

Seeing most of the activities are in the evening - I would love to get together with someone and do a little sightseeing during the day - I was reading that Grand Rapids has a great botanical gardens and sculpture park which would make for a great photo op - and I also read that there are some covered bridges nearby - Ive never seen one of them and I would love to do that too -
I also heard that its very good for Outlet shopping and thats REALLY interesting to me

Quick question: I don't see DSP amongst the shopping options at the convention. I'm assuming (correct me if I'm wrong) that as a sponsor DSP will have a booth with things for sale - perhaps CD's? I need to know so I can decide what I want to buy before I go.

I might be able to do a Thursday night crop. but here's a question - will there be wifi? Just curious. I have a cousing getting married in GR on Saturday - so I'll be coming up from Chicago anyway - and family is coming in from all over (DC, Virginia, Illinois) so Friday night is out. And from Saturday on I'll be vacationing on the beach in Holland (rented a cottage for two weeks). If I can convince my parents to take my kids on thursday night and drive them to Michigan on Friday morning - this might work!!!

Lauren and all:

The 'rapids' is the Grand River that runs though the city....I would imagine that in days of old it was more natural. Thus the name Grand Rapids. Downtown G.R. has many attractions within walking distance of the Amway Grand Plaza: The river, sculptures, shopping, museums (The Gerald Ford Museum where President Ford is buried) restaurants and party places.
Good picture taking opportunities.

Here are more links for those of you that are camping/staying elsewhere:
http://www.michigan.org/travel/locations/
Just click on red dot for more information.

Muskegon (about 30- 40 minutes away) is having a Summer Celebration. (My favorite is the arts and crafts fair). Here is the link for that:
http://www.michigan.org/travel/city/index.asp?city=G3715

(If you can be sure to visit a beach along Lake Michigan or one of the small quaint towns along the shoreline).:)

we'll have plenty of power (altho i always bring an extension cord wherever i go with my laptop, just in case). water and twizzlers would be great (for me, thanks!) :D chocolate is always good. i can't share if there's a goodie bag or not, cause you know, everyone would be wanting one. but if you're a snacker, i'd bring a little. :)

Quick question: I am coming to the Thursday all day crop--10am-10pm. Who is all going to the Thursday crop? I was seeing conflicting times between this site and the GASC site. I just want to make sure that I have the times correct and there will be many DSPers there to meeting and crop with on Thursday!

I wish I could go to more of the conference but I live in Detroit area and am just driving for the day since it's just me and I have 2 little guys at home. I tried to get my good friend JenS to come but she will be up north camping! And she is SO bummed!

Lauren, I wouldn't want your laptop to be lonely! :) If I can remember to do it I'll try to bring a pic or two on a flashdrive, thank you! (and scrapping a layout FOR you would be an honor! lol!) I've tried and tried to sell dh on the idea that I really NEED a laptop of my own so I can do the Scrapbook Convention up right. He didn't agree.

WoodsyWoman
07-21-2007, 10:23 AM
Mine came in the mail this week sometime but in all of the excitement it got lost among the clutter that comes from a couple of days of not being able to do much. I actually think I may have put it with the reservation information for the campground we are staying at. I do not remember what day it came but do remember peeking inside and seeing the wrist band.

One the bright side. The swelling in the finger is not too bad and I have figured out how to conform the dressings to allow for a point on the pad of my finger tip so that I can type. Oh, I may not be able to perform some of the regular house wife roles right now but NOTHING will keep me from my scrapping-addictions.

Since most of the happenings are at night, any chance of luring anyone up here to Sleeping Bear Dunes? This is a LOVELY area with one of the best beaches on Lake Michigan. And we have the Cherry Republic here - that alone is worth the trip. Three of us from the DSP grannie group are sitting at Cherry Republic right now - all with our computers. We started out with cherry scones and chocolate cherry coffee. Lunch time came and we had chicken salad with cherries in it and cherry lemonade. We have been dubbed the "Cherry Queens". :-)

I don't know anything about anything to do with the crop since I've never been to one! But just wanted to say, welcome to dsp, Cheryle... I see the post above is your first!

My wristband still hasn't arrived so I am guessing it's not going to. But I contacted the customer service at GASC and they said I can bring my email and that will do. I didn't pre-register for anything but the digital crop so I am going to have to buy a ticket for the convention at the door anyway. I may have the use of hubby's laptop (I'm hoping so, anyway). He's taking Matt to visit the grandparents and said if he can get PS loaded I can take it. At least then maybe I'll look like I know what I'm doing there! LOL!

They are all as nice in real life as they are in the online world! I was dissappointed not to make it back to the Friday night crop but left some chocolate with the front desk at the hotel for you... hope they left it in your room, Margie! I really enjoyed sitting next to Sharon and Cheryl and watching them scrap (I watched much more than I actually scrapped myself) and having one of my layouts printed out 12x12 on Margie's awesome printer! Jackie - Great American determines where the conventions are and they are pretty much the same places every year.

DSP normally goes along with established conventions and shows, so if you know of a show in Detroit you can send admin@digitalscrapbookplace.com an email and we will consider it for coming years. But - we can't do every show and every city, so we recommend you plan on doing some traveling next year :)

BETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You crack me up!!!! Seriously, if we lived closer, I think we could be best friends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had a great time both Friday and Saturday too! Traveling home was quite the adventure though.

To put things into perspective, I’ll use one time zone. Sunday morning I woke up at 1:00 am to grab my 3 am flight. I flew from Grand Rapids to Dallas in a TINY plane, one seat by 2 seats and maybe 20 rows deep. I arrived in Dallas about 5 am. I had a four hour stop in Dallas. I grabbed a coffee and sat at a table and scrapped until my battery went dead. People did look at me strange though! LOL At 9 am I got onto my flight bound for Los Angeles. The flight went without incident and I arrived in LAX at 12:30. Got my luggage and headed out to the busses. Just as I walked out to the curb the bus I needed drove past me. I was surrounded by a sea of people and couldn’t move. I finally pushed my way through and got the 1:15 bus. My hubby picked me up at the bus depot around 2:10 and then we had the long journey home from there. I finally walked into the door of my house at 3:30. I traveled for a whopping 15 ½ hours yesterday. I did fall asleep at 6 pm last night and just woke up. I managed to get in 15 hours of sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now mind you, I used one time zone to simplify this. I actually was traveling between time zones which was enough to make me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i had a wonderful drive home. lauren and i stopped at a bookstore (she could live at one i think) and i got the HP book 7 on CD so i could listen all the way home! so i had 8 hours of listening time and enjoyed every minute!
loved meeting all the members, and all the new ones too! the classes were fun and we hope enjoyable. i'm still exhausted, but i'm off for another trip in the morning, so no time for being tired. as the girls learned at the crop, you can rest when you're dead! thanks to all who came and made it so fun!!

Thanks to all of you. We had a great time at the Friday crop. Were going home in the morning, but stayed and took the 2 morning classes. I learned a lot and am excited to be using the new things. Even wowed my hubby when I corrected a cute pic of our grandson that he took this weekend. (Men don't notice the runny nose stuff before taking pics)
