All right, I guess I just don't understand feathering in CS2.

In PSP, when I wanted to feather out the edge of a photo into the layer behind it, I'd set the feather to some high amount (depending on the size of the end image I am producing) and then make a selection of the edge.

PSP would then add the extra width I'd specified in the feather setting, and this part would be feathered. If I inverted the selection and did a cut, I'd be left with a lovely little fuzzy edge.

I have YET to get this to work.

Deb, if I understand what you are trying to do - don't inverse the selection. See what that gives you ... but feathering always sort of stumps me too....

Well, if I don't invert, wouldn't it delete the part i'm trying to keep?!

I can't even understand it yet in PSE4, so I am rooting for ya.

Okay, If I am understanding you right, what you need to do is make the selection first then CTL+ALT+D to bring up feather command, and type in feather value. Unfortunately in CS2 you can't see a preview (thank goodness for CTL+D), apparently in CS3 you get to see the effects before you click ok.

Then all you need to do is jump that to a new layer CTL+J. If you want the inverse selected (so that you essentially have a feathered hole), just right click and "select inverse" before CTL+J.

Hope that is what you are after.
