I have been researching senior portrait photographers and found this studio. I just love their work. (Click on the thumbnail to see a portfolio.)
http://www.greggriess.com/seniors_portfolio.htm
So go grab a willing model and take some portraits like these. Anyone up for this? Post a link to your finished photos here and post what equipment you used, camera settings, software and techniques.
 I can't wait to see the results.
wow... that sounds fun... I'm up for this... now the hardest part is: looking for a willing model!!

Well I must admit I'm a bit confused as to what 'senior' means - I looked at the webpage and they certainly don't look like senior citizens to me
I thought I'll be in for this challenge - I have a couple of models right here at home  until I realised they must either be high school students or at University.
We're not all Americans on DSP you know ;)
i think it means models of any age... seniors in high school ( is that an american term??? is the last year of 4 years of high school or last year of 4 year college/university, when they take a portrait and make a yearbook...is that an american thing too?? ) and any age older or younger than seniors!!! so just take some cool portraits of your models no matter their age or educational status...lol.... now i just wish i had some one who could be the model...i will really have to think about this...
dkapp12
03-25-2007, 09:13 PM
Yes - portraits, any age will be fine. Can't ever find a teenager when you need one, lol. Don't forget to check out Karen's new challenge - it is also a portrait challenge and concentrates on capturing the eyes. Fits right in with what we are doing.

These are beautiful and I love how you used natural light - just gorgeous!! Gosh I don't mean for this to be a critque thread, but I want to suggest that you use a reflector (white foam board would do) to reflect some more of the natural light onto her face. If you are handy with software programs - you can edit it a little and bring out her lovely face and features - she sure is a sweethheart and I love, love, love the hat and dress :)
I hope you don't mind - I just had to play a bit.
Before and after - I used Photoshop and NIK filters.

Can we make it go through the end of April? I want to play but all my models are in Florida for Spring Break - then I leave on Vacation and won't be back until April 23rd. I really want to play.

04-05-2007, 04:20 PM
Since this is just a member's challenge - I suppose we can extend it through the end of April or for as long as members want to post their work. The the main purpose of the challenge is to look at pro portraiture and study the poses, composition, and technique - to learn by observation. I posted a link to a studio at the start of this thread that I thought was interesting. If you haven't visited Karen's website - be sure to take a look - I love her site and her work. So grab a model and have fun! :)

love this..and thanks for letting us know all that you did with it...what is defogged? and what noise removal software do you have??

Thanks Bobbie and Nancy. I am really enjoying this - the grandkids have long tired of being my models, so I don't get as many opportunties with them anymore.
To answer your question about defogging, I am not sure where I learned this technique - I think possibly one of the Canon sites. I will try to find the exact link and post it. But for now I will explain. Once the photo is converted from RAW and brought into Photoshop, I duplicate the layer and then run an action which is nothing more than the unsharp mask set at 20; 60; and Threshold is 0. Since it is on it's own layer I can slide the opacity level up and down until it looks right then I continue on with any other tweaking.

I have found a great photoshop video tutorial for all of you - it shows how to "defog" a portrait along with other workflow techniques - very informative.
Enjoy!

My DS and DIL were married Friday and I took this photo. I know it is not a senior portrait, but I have no models for that. Hope this is ok....
I copied the layer and used the screen adjustment at 92%. Then I did a gaussian blur around the edges at 40.

Thats a lovely portrait Ima, I love the colour tones :)
I'm not too sure what you mean when you say hikey conversion, hi key is to do with the light and typically clothing, it is usually white on white, so the model would be dressed in white or light coloured clothing against a white or light coloured background or a backgroud lit to be light coloured, the only dark tones would maybe be the hair :)

My models don't rest for a second. At least not when I try to take shots. I'll try and get some new ones but for now I want to show you one from last year. It's one of my favorite shots of Leonhard. I just cropped it and added the property stamp otherwise it's directly from the camera.

So here is another one. Brand new from our trip to the small zoo. The model is the same as in the other one just a bit older now. ;-)
One of the few times he is resting is when he eats or is fixed in the stroller. Here he is eating in his stroller. So good conditions for a portrait shot. :-)
The picture was taken outdoor in the shade under a tree. The only adjustment I made was to add a tiny bit more red because the skin tones were a bit green from the tree.
