I'm using ACDSee Photo Manager to organize my digiscrapping supplies & photos. It's flexible for cataloging & powerful for searching.

A couple of great things about it are that you can search for whatever you've tagged and view white png files.

My sister & I have tutorials here for Getting Started (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/files/details.php?file=2) & Organizing your Alphabets (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/files/details.php?file=11) And a 30 day trial can be downloaded at the top of the tutorial page.

DigiScrapInfo.com has a lot of helpful information related to digital scrapbooking. Nothing is being sold there.

You said you use ACDSee for both your kits and your photos...have you noticed any slowing down? I'm wondering if I should use ACDSee for my kits and Picassa for my photos like some people do...or if ACDSee can handle them both (I have millions of both!!)

We have suggestions for organizing both in ACDSee. And no - the program isn't slowing down. (we're still waiting to find that threshold!). I know of a designer with 200 gig organized! and no slow down. The nice thing with having it all in ACDSee is that when you back up the database, you have it all in one place.

At the very bottom of this thread is info on organizing photos. (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=324)

I'm very interested in the ACDsee, but am hesitant because I'm afraid that it'll slow my laptop. Does it make copies of the elements within a kit, or does it re-shuffle the element in which ever manner you organize? In other words, will I be able to use just one kit easily, or will I need to search for all of the elements of a particular kit? Although, probably, the kit name will be searchable, right? And this works just swell with the Paint Shop Pro browser, right?
Oh, I hate indecision! Thank you in advance.

When you organize with ACDsee, you're not actually moving any files, you're just tagging them into category (that you choose). When you want to use something specific, you can just select that category and it will show the items that you've tagged. Another thing is you can add author tags (designer) and keywords (I enter the site and kit name). That way if you are doing a challenge for a particular site, you can have it show all the brads, or ribbons, or papers etc from that site only.

So if you have your supplies already pretty organized in folders it won't undo what you've already done, it will just make it easier to see everything that you have, and you'll be able to find exactly what you're looking for. I believe it might make copies of thumbnails (I don't know for sure) but it doesn't make copies of any of your supplies.

Hi Maggie,
One of the great things about ACDSee is that it doesn't slow down your computer. I know of a designer with 200 gig cataloged with no slow down. Many are switching to ACDSee because they're not happy when PSE Organizer bogs at 20 gig. PSP is a bigger drag on your system than ACDSee ever will be.

And ACDSee creates a database of thumbnails. It's not overly large.

Erin answered the part about not creating duplicates of your files. And yes it works great with all photo editors. We have instructions for setting that up. You can click on items in ACDSee & drag them into PSP or whichever photo editing software that you use.

I have used ACDsee for a while now and one thing I love about it is its speed. Which is a good thing because I am a BAD organiser!! Once handy hint (and the designers can correct me if I am wrong) but the kits at DSP seems to have a naming convention where backgrounds start with "BG", elements start with "Element", wordart starts with "WA" so using those keywords to search for your items when you start to categorise your elements may be helpful (I'm not sure when the naming convention came in - some of the older kits seem to be different).

We have instr's for doing this - it's a great timesaver Sharon!

I am enjoying using ACDSee a lot, just need some dedicated time  !!!

Two things I'd love to have, and maybe its just me doing something wrong, if so, please set me on the right path......
~ when viewing thumbnails in ACDSee I'd love to be able to right click and have an "open in" - I know I can dedicate always opening a specific file type in a specific program, but with, particularly ones like .jpgs I like it to be a choice - certainly don't want PS having to open evey time I click on a .jpg, but sometimes that's where I want to use it.
~ if I move folders in windows I see I loose all my hard work...... could a refresh button not be available in ACDSee? I know I can move files from within ACDSee, but old habits die hard, and I just want to be able to move from wherever I choose - not asking too much I hope

Thanks again, great program and great tuts :)

Go set up all your editors you want to use by doing the basic steps in here:
Default Photo Editor: How can I get ACDSee Photo Manager to automatically open all my images in my photo editing program? (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/phpmyfaq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=8&id=15&artlang=en)

Now to use, select a thumbnail or thumbnails, choose Tools | Open in Editor | select from your configured editors.

Sorry this is the way that ACDSee is designed. There is an option to rebind (reconnect the files to where ACDSee thinks it is) but I think its a pain and would rather avoid move the files outside of ACDSee than do a rebind. I personally am using ACDSee for my Windows Explorer. About the only thing it won't do for me is show me properties about my disk space.

Question
Because my hard drive is getting so full I've taken off some kits and put them on CD /DVD. Will this program recognize / catalogue things in removable media or just the hard drive?

Yes it will. When you burn a dvd/cd it will prompt you to make a photo disk. This will keep your data on a section for offline media. For more info:

I went from the trial to the purchase! I'm still entering everything (for once I'm not jealous of all of you who have been at this collecting business so much longer than I have!!!) but slowly am getting things tagged.

My question is in reference to burning a cd. I tried to burn a cd using Roxio the way I always have and Roxio said I didn't have the right media, and to put the correct disc in. I hadn't changed anything, using a disc from the same bunch I have, wasn't overloading it. The only thing that I could think of was that ACDSee wants to burn my cd, and wouldn't let me do it on Roxio.

Is this possible? Or do I need to check with Roxio?

I may just be waaaaaay of base here...

I'm glad that you're enjoying it! :)

ACDSee has a nice internal feature of burning discs (cd's & dvd's) & then you have the option of including the database information if you'd like.

We have instr's for doing it Creating CD's/DVD's in ACDSee (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/files/details.php?file=7)

I should have been more clear--I do know that it has that feature, and I will learn to use it (probably no harder than Roxio:) )--but I was trying to do something quickly using what I knew how to do--fast.

So will having ACDSee prevent me from using Roxio? That's really my question!:D --and, no, I won't get rid of ACDSee!

And btw, you and your sister are a great help! I've been to the ACDSee forum as well as your digiscrapinfo site. I would not have gotten as much done as I have without all your hints and instructions! Thanks!

Well fine then :D if you really want to use Roxio...... I'm going to send in my sister. She's the hardware expert

There should not be any interference with Roxio and ACDSee.
You might try Roxio's forum. http://forums.support.roxio.com/
Try doing a search for the exact error it gives you or if it's long search for a phrase in the error.

I have PSPX, and the free trial of ACDsee. I've organized about a quarter of my kits, and now I want to make a layout.
PSPX is open, and now I want to look at, let's say, blue papers. (I organized papers by color and print, so there is a category for me to look at.)
How do I do this?
Do I open ACDsee in another window and bounce back and forth?
I tried opening it with the PSPX browser, but I couldn't find any of my kit elements, just some samples that came with the program.

Thank you in advance--

That's why I like using the PSP browser - I can browse, then double click and open right inside of Paint Shop Pro. But I dislike that they've made it a palette - now loaded images go under the browser and it has to be minimized.

I see no one has answered this question and I am by no means an expert but I use ACDSee and have both PSPXI and ACDSee open and drag from ACDSee into PSP. It really is easy. I haven't ever gotten use to PSPs browser or whatever they call it but I was using ACDSee before PSP so that may be why. good luck

This should help you: Default Photo Editor: How can I get ACDSee Photo Manager to automatically open all my images in my photo editing program? (http://www.digiscrapinfo.com/phpmyfaq/8_15_en.html)

At the bottom of that help it lists the 4 ways you can get your photos from ACDSee to your editor.

I have ACDSee 5.0 and have been using it for a long time. I neglected to upgrade when I had the chance to newer versions. ACDSee sends me email about the newer versions. However, I have been wanting to upgrade to 9.0 and there should be where I can get it cheaper cause I am upgrading. I have tried sending email to them and went on their web site and can't find where you can upgrade and get cheaper price.

One use to be able to do that. I also don't like downloading from the web site. I prefer buying mine from store like Office Max, etc. However, I have done a search and no one carries it. I think someone bought out ACDSee not sure tho. I never had problem getting help. One has to search I think In Questions and answers.

Finally found a phone number to call however, all the responses they have to pick from none applied to my questions. Could not get customer service either.

I just wonder if I should keep what I have. Is it worth it to upgrade? Some of the reviews I read in different places said it was not as good as it used to be.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Carti,
The answer is yes! you can get 30% off because you've been a past customer.

We suggest that you can download here for $27.99 (http://store.acdsee.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=DisplayPage&Locale=en_US&SiteID=acd&id=ProductDetailsPage&productID=69658800) & burn a copy of the exe file & a text file with the license code to a CD as a backup.

If you still would like a boxed copy, that is possible too. I will pm you with the email contact for Customer service at ACD. I'm sorry that you weren't able to get in contact with them.

And if you upgrade to ACDSee 9, then our tutorials will be quite helpful. Please let me know if you need more help.

Connie--can you point me to the thread over on digi scrap info--I want to move all my kits to an external hard drive, and don't want to loose my tags! (I think I might be being a bit lazy here, I could run over and find it couldn't I! :D )

Hi,
lol at lazy - that's me too - I just ask my sister.

I just asked her this recently because I need to do it too.

She said use the move file function

select a folder or folders
In the center there is a 'Move to Folder'
then select the EHD as your destination

maybe Test a folder to make sure your tags go -
