I would like to know the best way to scan a newspaper clipping. When I have tried I get ashadow of the writing behind. I have tried putting a piece of white card on top but that didnt do much better. I would like to know if there are any helpful hints for getting the best scan. Photocopying looks yuk to say the least

I was sent a scanned coloured newspaper article in an email. It was hard to read so I turned it to greyscale in Paint Shop Pro. I then upped the brightness and it was still wishy washy so used black and white point adjustments to get whiter white and blacker black. It may have turned out better if scanned as a black and white image in the first place. I always scan photos at 600dpi. I guess that is not what you want really but it may help. Sometimes you just have to fiddle a bit with the settings both in the scanner and in your particular graphics program. You may have to clone out a lot of marks if they are excessive. :)

Thank you I will try that with what I got. I do scan at a high resolution because I know they dont print well if you don't. That is from trial and error.

I'm not sure what scanner you have, or what settings it has, but some have a newspaper setting - or descreening or remove moire pattern that help. Also, if you can, adjust the brightness before scanning as it does seem to wipe out much of the print on the other side. Play around with whatever settings you have - many folks don't delve into those enough and end up having to edit further in PS or other graphics program when it can be done at the time of scanning - which definitely works, but is time consuming. And depending on the scanner, that may be the best option. I tend to use the histogram adjustment the most on things I scan, but pretty much use most of the settings available to me and while sometimes I still need to edit a bit further in another program, the more I've learned about my scanner, the less I need to do that.

I found this on HP site and also read in a forum where someone used black paper over the newsprint. So forget the white card and go for black it seems. I havent tried it. :)
"Translucent papers and newsprint allow text from the opposite side to show through the paper, confusing the scanner. Place a sheet of black paper over the back of the page to block the light. "

I haven't scanned newspaper in a while but I think I got a fairly good result by taking a digital photo and using that. Don't remember the details tho. The black paper under it would probably work as well.
