View Full Version : Get MORE out of DSU Challenge
Here's an ongoing monthly challenge especially for former DSU students. I know you had great intentions when you signed up, but if you didn't finish, want to redo some homework layouts, or just want to see what else is in those courses that you missed, this is the challenge that'll help you do that!
Abby and I are running this challenge, so if you have any questions or need inspiration, post here so we can jump in and help. Help one another as well with ideas, tech support, etc. Remember all your DSU teachers are available via email after class ends too.
GUIDELINES:
Post the challenge layout in the DSU class gallery that is most relevant. If you use techniques from more than one class, just pick one gallery that best applies.
Post the LINK to your challenge layout in this thread.
Comment on lots of layouts, 'cause we all know I am swamped commenting already.
So pull out those DSU class binders you printed out. Let's get scrapping!
MAY challenge
Pull out any DSU class that you really want to revisit and create a new layout using at least one technique from that class. One you've tried already, missed the first time, didn't understand, one you liked, anything goes! Post a link here when it's done with a description of what you did pertaining to the course. Have fun!

Thanks for this little reminder to finish up those last few things Emma! Here is my first page- Favorite Photo (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=184460&cat=500&ppuser=31249)- I used the directions from DSU 261 to make some metal floral photo corners for SADS. I loved learning how to combine shapes and add layer styles to make elements.

Wonderful idea. It's like making up an incomplete grade! I went right to work the minute Bethy Nixon pm'd me, so I'll post the links here. I finished up Lesson 4 today which was to journal a layout two different ways using two different kits.
My first redo is here:
(be right back)
I came back - couldn't find this, so started again:

What a WONDERFUL opportunity to make up my "incomplete" grade. Thank you so much.
I just finished taking DSU295 Journaling, but didn't finish Lesson 4 which was to post a layout using two different kits and two different styles of journaling. So, as soon as my teacher, Bethy Nixon, pm'd me today about this opportunity, I went right to work.
These layouts are about my sister giving her baby up for adoption (I didn't even know that she had been pregnant until 6 years later!),
and how God enabled me to find my sister's daughter at EXACTLY the right time for both my sister and her daughter, 34 years later!
Both my sister and her daughter gave me permission to tell their story.
My first layout is a redo of the one I did post using fonts to express emotions and using a narrative style of journaling:

My second layout ended up as two companion pages:
This is the left-side page with the journaling - also uses a narrative style but is quite different:

This is the right-side page with the accompanying photos:

Your CC is appreciated. Thanks for looking.
I was wondering if any of you would like to show off a snazzy element, or background, or technique you've created 'because' of the new skills you learned during your course .. this is the time to show off those new layouts you've made with your new skills .. and of course, if you have a question, here's the place to ask it!
these are great nice work. Great job finishing up those lessons too: I know I am always guilt-ridden with stuff like that, and it feels so good to get it done (and let it go :)) Keep up the good work and keep posting those layouts you've made with your newfound skills!

This is a great idea Emma and Abby - I have finished my classes but some of them are just too good not to do a repeat! Thanks for the opportunity.

Thanks for this Emma. It has been drown time. Good intentions.. still there. Just got back from Spain. Spanish colds are just as bad as American ones, in case you didn't know. AND I am getting ready to teach a beginner class on hybrid scrapping soooo it may take awhile but it WILL get finished... just don't make me specify the year.

Excellent job on your metal! I noticed it when you first posted, but had no idea you made it yourself!! Good for you! It's great to see the classes translated into 'real' life!

Emma- http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=189999&cat=500&ppuser=74339
This is a background I did from scratch..You'll be proud that I took the plunge..Background has 12 layers..each with a different blending mode, each set to different opaciities and fills, and each with it's own style setting. All the brush strokes are altered and several have had filters applied to the strokes.
the photo is the result of suzannes photo correction class. The colors have been balanced. The photo itself the result of using masks and modes to bring it into better depth and focus.
The photo itself was taken when I was shooting at anything while adjusting the lighting and exposure compensation. There was just something about this that held my attention so I wanted to do something with it. She wanted me to take his 6 month pictures rather than bring him to a studio. (familiar environment..ya know?)
thanks for posting this opportunity to keep going with the classes. See you next month in beginners ps !!! (((hugs)))
Wow Carolyn, your background is just awesome! Totally 'useful' too .. not the kind that you can only use once. Your photo is beautiful, tender and poignant! Excellent use of your classes .. can only imagine what you'll be doing after your next one!
JUNE challenge
This month's challenge is to finish or redo Lesson 4 from one of your classes. You know, that one you always meant to get around to but never did? So dust off Lesson 4, do the whole thing or just one section, and post a layout using something from it in that class's gallery.
Sounds like a great plan .. don't we all have some 'lesson 4' in our lives that we didn't finish :) ?

Great challenge, Emma, I have a couple of those lying around....:) :) :)
This isn't a Lesson 4, so I guess it's more apt for the May challenge. I have been wanting to use my own elements on a layout, but never get around to it (how sad is that?!) from my DSU 261 PSE Realistic Page Elements class. I encourage my students to actually use the things they make on a layout, so here's my Lesson 2 layout!

What a good idea! I did finish my homework, but think it went in a bit late for c&c. But I did learn and I did enjoy, so I've done a couple more lo's using techniques from Emma's DSU130 lesson 4.

Very nice work! That's why I want you to post in your class gallery for this challenge because ANYTIME you add a layout to one of my class galleries I will leave cc on it: I just catch it up with the current students' work when I'm in there leaving comments, opening everything new regardless of when the student took the class.
JULY challenge
This month's challenge is to create one layout using a technique that confused you too much to do the first time you tried, or something that was just too ugly to use on an actual project! Polish it up and USE IT!
Was anyone able to do the challenge for July? Here's mine:
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=204644
This layout has been undone for quite a long time, so last month I finally polished it off and used some items I made with DSU 261. I really wanted to use the fluffy tag toppers that are so fun to make!
It also satisfied June's challenge since it's the example for Lesson 4 of 261!
SEPTEMBER challenge
Use any graphic you've made in a DSU class and put it on a layout. This can be a photo, page element, background, anything. Go for it! Post your layout in your class gallery, and post a link here as well.

OCTOBER challenge
This month, if you have taken a class for which you've now upgraded your software version, go back to the class with an older version and try any project or layout using your new version!

Emma,
Your baby is beautiful.
I have been keeping up and redoing all my 110 lessons and ready to commit to a class for september but really need a push in the right direction.
I am less insecure about playing with my layers and manipulating them for fun...
but still completely lost on trying to locate the circular marque crop (I think my son removed it to make me twitch), or successfully remember where my downloads go.
I am torn between your brush class, and an elements class.
Robyn Lieberman
Hey, you found my old challenge! I haven't kept it up because as you can see I was the only one posting in here!
Yeah, when my stuff disappears I always blame my kids first, LOL! The elliptical marquee is grouped behind the rectangular one :)
I think if you are struggling with layers, the brush class MIGHT be easier, but overall they're pretty even as far as needed skill levels, just teaches a different skill set and have a different style.
And, if anyone would like to do a DSU challenge to dust-bust those old classes, pipe in here!
