Oh , thanks for the heads up on this Lauren. I also read his first one The Kite Runner and I loved it. I guess I have to go and get his new one. Of course I can't start reading it til I finishe the one I'm reading now The Husband, by Dean Koontz.

The Kite RUnner is probably in my top 10 books ever - it was so amazing. I have his new book - next in line after I finish Lean Mean 13 - the latest Janet Evanovich book. Splendid Suns has rave reviews so I am really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the recommendation Lauren. I left my book club back in CA when we moved. Now that we're settled in here, I was just thinking that I'm ready to get reading again. I loved Kite Runner too, so I'll give Splendid Suns a go!

I have Kite Runner from the library, waiting to finish my current book before starting it. I am going to post a new thread about it too (the one I am reading).

Wow was this a great book. Like the Kite Runner it totally overwhelmed me. Not only is it just a great story but i learned so much about Afghanistan. Thanks for the suggestion Lauren.

The Kite Runner was very difficult reading for me emotionally. While I thought it was very interesting, I didn't love it as much as most seem to. Is A Thousand Splendid Suns just as depressing?

As an aside, I highly recommend Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. I really loved that book.

Jennilyn- I totally agree! I read The Kite Runner last year because a friend told me it was the best book she ever read and it left me bummed out. I didn't find the joy in the book. BTW my friend still says it's her favorite book- what's wrong with her? :)

Well it is about the life of women in Afghanistan - they surely dont and didnt have the same liberties and lifestyle that we in the west do so if you think that sounds depressing then dont read it - I personally found myself thinking that I was so thankful that I was born in New Zealand where we have more freedom than those in countries like this - but also so respectful of the strength of the women who lived through the various regimes in Afghanistan . So no I didnt find it depressing at all - I found it amazing that this book which is so entrenched in the way of life of women and is written completely from a womans point of view was actually written by a man!!
