Who would like to participate in a photoshoot the day before the crop - I thought it would be really fun to get together a day early and spend some time clicking away at each other .
we could arrange to meet somewhere and wander to some of the wonderful places to take photos - thoughts include - the conservatory at the bellagio - the fountains of course too but they are so much nicer at night) - we could do a world tour in a day if we were energetic enough - Paris, Rome, Egypt New York,
If its too hot we could do mainly indoors or if its a nice day we can take out outside and have some fun

Lauren - I think the Bellagio would be the best for a group photo. All those flowers in the background would be lovely. Some hotels also have those dress up photo booths - that might be funny ;) September is usually a nice month, but it might still be pretty hot. Can't wait to meet everyone who's coming!

Lauren

I'm not just thinking of a group photo although we do need to have at least one of those too - but this could be a chance for us to all practice our photo skills - the conservatory at the bellagio has some great photo ops - as would the eiffel tower at Paris, the pryamid at Luxor - - the canals at the Venetian etc etc

It's always fun to get pictures at New York, New York. We can take some great pics of the Statue of Liberty at New York, New York, along with the Brooklyn Bridge and inside at Greenwich Village.

Paris, LV, has some lovely French streets inside and some wonderful outside shots of the Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triomphe and the Fountain.

Of course, there are the gondolier shots at the Venetian - along with the streets.

My guess is that we will want to stay mostly inside. There is a monorail that goes between most hotels, though

Now dont you feel at all out of place with your point and shoot - I read this wonderful article on Ken Rockwells site which basically says it doesnt matter a squat what camera you use - it makes great reading and you can read it here - http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm - if you look at some of the examples taken with a phone camera that he links to there you will see exactly what he means too - Its far more the "nut behind the wheel" that matters than the engine!!

So Im still after suggestions for this - personally I would like to do the venice canals and the bellagio conservatory ( I got some good photos of the conservatory in March but it will have new decor now seeing its a different season) - - but this isnt all about what I want - where would you like to go for this little photoshoot

I've never been to Las Vegas before, so it will all be wonderful for me seeing everything for the first time. However, I have always wanted to go to Egypt, New York and up the Eifel Tower.

Any thoughts on times yet, Lauren? Would love to do this but will have to be creative. We're driving so will probably get there around noon and then have reservations for the Blue Man group that night. Maybe I could sneak in just for a couple of hours...can call JD when I get there.

Re the point-and-shoots, I may buy one before September. The Rebel SLR is fantastic when I want to take zoom shots but it sure gets bulky on a trip! Anyone have a camera that you just love?

Carma
08-13-2007, 08:51 PM
I am looking forward to the photo shoot. Your plans sound great. What ever you wold like to do the above all sounds wonderful. Omni I have a Nicon coolpix 5200 and have enjoyed it. Nothing like the big fancy ones a lot of you have but it is sufficient. I get good pictures with it. Got it at Costco. 3 years ago.

Lauren

Perhaps we can meet for an early lunch somewhere and take it from there- those who are arriving later can skip the lunch - meet us at the restaurant and we can go from there - then those who have evening plans can leave when they need to

Hey, Lauren - I think you are coming a LONG way for this - you should have a big say in where we are going.

1) I think we should go to New York, New York. There are great picture opportunities outside with the bridge, the Statue of Liberty and the boats. Inside we can do some great photos around Greenwich Village.

2) While we are taking statue of Liberty - we can do some with Excalibur as the backdrop.

3) There are some amazing photo opportunities at the Luxor, although we have to bear in mind that it is very dark in places and some of the bigger statues don't always come out.

4) Paris, Las Vegas has the monuments outside (Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Opera House, Fountain) and inside there are the streets of Paris and a trip up the Eiffel Tower. From the top of the Eiffel Tower, there are some fantastic views of the whole city and surrounding mountains.

5) The Venetian - there are the streets of Venice and the canals. Lovely chances for great photos.

6) Bellagio and Conservatory - Fantastic!!

There are dozens of other places. Dozens! MonteCarlo frontage, Ceasar's Palace, the list is never ending - we have tons of photo-shoots with the girls over the years when we went there for dance competitions.

We just have to remember - NO pictures in the casino areas!

Lauren

Yes photos around NYNY are great - you can see some of mine from last time in my gallery here - http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=183836
I think the Eiffel tower is GREAT for photos at night - see here - http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=176167

Id like to see a bit more of it during the day too
Also the fountains at bellagio are great for photos but probably better at night too - I got some great shots from the top of the eiffel tower of the bellagio fountains .
I also got some good photos of the Luxor but they were at night - it was VERY dark down there -and it would be good to get some day time shots there.

Lauren - this is the day before the crop - when do you have to be at the convention? is that on Friday and this is on Saturday?

Lauren
08-16-2007, 06:31 PM
No the convention is after the crop !!

FormbyGirl
08-16-2007, 06:37 PM
OK - my calendar was way off - heaven knows what days I booked for the hotel :) glad that you are not double booking yourself for the photoshoot. We are so excited about the crop... Hotel is booked, CathieMarie's flight is booked from England, registered for crop - now we just have to count the days!!

Lauren
08-17-2007, 02:25 AM
Right - anyone know of a suitable place for us to meet up ??-now if this were New Zealand I could name a hundred suitable places but with Vegas Im a little less familiar - We could either meet up for an early lunch or a late morning tea - or we could just meet in a more open public place Im happy to do some internet research on suitable places but if someone knows somewhere suitable then holler loudly

Tara
08-17-2007, 03:25 AM
I'm not one for getting up early...but I'll get up early for you guys!!! I say that the more time we have together the better...just don't make me be somewhere at 8AM (please!!!!). :)

Where to meet? Where to meet? We could always meet in a hotel lobby...or at one end of the strip so that we can work methodically down it. I don't know Vegas that well but if we said "Meet at this hotel" (especially a famous one), I think everyone could handle it! :)

Lauren
08-17-2007, 03:53 AM
Ok wellllllllllllllllllll - we will decide on a time but 8am will NOT be the time so dont worry about that!!- Im thinking more like 10.30 might be a good time - and then I will give out my US cellphone number ( yes I bought a cellphone last time i was there just for using when Im there!!because the international roaming rates that telecom NZ charge are astronomical)- to anyone who thinks they wont get there till later - they can phone me and we can tell them where we are at so they can meet up with us when they are ready - I will come up with a suitable meeting point - Im going through my memory banks back to March to think of a suitable place - and I will post it here in plenty of time - this whole thing is just so super exciting - I leave in 27 days - ( not that Im counting!!!)

Carma

Getting your phone number would be great Lauren, not sure what time I can check into hotel, but need to get hubby settled before I come over to be with you gals.

kim
08-20-2007, 04:57 PM
I am already planning out my camera bag!!

2 cameras
a couple of lenses
some filters
extra memory cards
good shoes (who cares if they are ugly!)
extra battery

what else?

Lauren
08-21-2007, 12:15 AM
LOL kim you are keen - I think I shall stick to one camera this time - and probably just the one lens - my 18 - 200 VR lens is just wonderful for times like this when you want something that is good for most situations - -
Definitely yes on the comfy shoes - nothing worse than having sore feet - you should have seen the blisters on the bottom of my feet in Chicago!!!-
Extra memory cards are very necessary and prob the extra battery too although the battery for my D40 lasts really well
Im also thinking - sunglasses and sunblock incase we stray outside into the sun - and chocolate - for that energy kick!!

Margie
08-22-2007, 12:03 AM
yay!!! i'm all about lunch! pictures, well you know, i'll do what i always do. put my little camera away and say kim and lauren, do you mind just sharing your pics? and they'll look at me sadly and understandingly (cause mine stink anyway) and say sure!
not sure when i'm getting there, i'd think early sat am. i have to look after all the equipment, so hopefully all will arrive safely and i'll be free to go!
we will have a projector for the crop! so we can share pics, techniques, whatever!
i'm getting excited!

Tara
08-22-2007, 02:57 AM
Getting your phone number would be great Lauren

Yes, it would...because then I can crank call you!!!!!!

Lauren
08-22-2007, 03:33 AM
LOLOL!!- but when my phone flashed orange I'd know it was you!!

I did think of a place we could meet - Its not a restaurant though because I just didnt go to enough eateries when I was in Vegas last time to know which was a suitable place

BUT - I think this would be a good starting place

In the Bellagio - Find the Conservatory - its near the registration desk so you have to go right through the casino to get to it -- you need to go under the wonderful glass flower ceiling to get there too
when you are facing the conservtory from the registration desk there is a kind of corridor to the left - there are some big chandeliers above you - should we meet under the chandeliers - I can even post a photo of the chandeliers I mean if you like!!
There is a restaurant at the back of the Conservatory but I have no idea if its suitable or even affordable .
I do think we should definitely visit Jean-Phillippe Patisserie though - I hear there is a huge chocolate fountain there - Margie might go into hyper ventilation at the thought of the following ( copied and pasted from another site - The chocolate fountain rises 27 feet from the lower pump room and 6 ceiling spouts disburse chocolate 14 feet above the floor level. The chocolate then cascades into 25 had-crafted artistic glass vessels.

Yes, I am sure she was thinking of the chocolate fountain.
Kasuzi, how long have you lived in Vegas? I used to live there.

Chocolate - bring it on, I'm all for that!
I have lived in Vegas for three years. I moved from Canada, must say I have been enjoying the winters here! How long ago did you live in here Carma?

MarsOlson
08-27-2007, 05:50 PM
oh kassuzi! I am wondering what Canadian chocolate and candy to bring... lol. We have so much american candy it's hard to know what is unique to Canada. any requests? I will google it to be sure. It would be awfully hard to get rid of non Canadian chocolate wouldn't it? lol

kassuzi
08-27-2007, 06:37 PM
OMG Mars that would be great! Your right, some of that Canadian candy is too good! Two things I could not find here that I was looking for, for my girls, are Smarties and the Kinder Surprise Eggs (I don't think they are a Cdn product though are they?). As for general chocolate etc, to be quite honest I have tried to avoid this for a while now and cannot even remember brand names right now. I would recognize the box though! I'll have to check with my sister.

I look forward to meeting you. I admire your work.

Carma
08-27-2007, 07:16 PM
Kassuzi we moved from Vegas in 1994. I did love the winters there. I used to own a craft store on the corner of Decatur and Charleston.....I think it is a christian book store there now.

kassuzi
08-27-2007, 09:26 PM
If you have not been back since 1994 Carma, I'm sure things have changed a lot. Even in the three years I have been here, I have seen lots of changes. Hopefully you can make it to the photo walk, that sounds like fun.

Carma
08-27-2007, 11:34 PM
Kassuzi, I have been back several times and yes it has really changed. I am glad that I am no longer in all that hectic traffic etc.
I do plan on getting there by noon for the photo shoot walk, I will need to get my husband settled in the hotel before I come over to join the group. Then I will be there for the full day of the crop. Look forward to meeting you.

08-31-2007, 09:56 AM
I would love to join you all! I live here in Las Vegas and unless it cools down A LOT before then (107 today) we may want to stick close to air conditioned venues. Keep me posted!

at the risk of sounding really dumb - what is a flattie?

Sandersmr
08-31-2007, 01:13 PM
Y'all remember me? As it turns out, I will be in Las Vegas that weekend with friends. So if I run into a grouo of swimsuit-clad, chocolate-covered ladies with cameras around their necks - I'll know who you are!!!

kim
08-31-2007, 01:18 PM
OMG!!! Sandersmr!!!! I am rolling on the floor!!! Hop in and join the fun. :)

I wonder if they make under"chocolate" camera housings! :)

Lauren
08-31-2007, 03:38 PM
LOL!!- Now that would be a sight
Sandersmr why dont you come and join us !!
Mcarpent - yes I suspected we may need to stay indoors for much of the day!!- Ive been warned about the heat - its lucky there is plenty to take photos of indoors at Vegas!!

Lauren
08-31-2007, 04:02 PM
THOUGHT!! ( I dont do that too often - it hurts too much)
We should make ourselves some kind of name tag for the Photo walk!!

mcarpent
08-31-2007, 04:56 PM
Good Idea - how about a large DSP and then a lttle smaller underneath our log on name???? This could even be done on a stick on type name badge.

Carma
08-31-2007, 06:29 PM
If some one has the time it would be nice if one were designed that we could copy.

Lauren
08-31-2007, 07:20 PM
Im thinking it might be a good little contest - the most creative name tag will win a prize - ( yet to be determined!!)

Lauren
08-31-2007, 09:05 PM
Ok I have a basic ( very open to change and very relaxed plan)- this plan is based on a bit of research Ive done and based on the fact that its likely to be hot and we will want to be inside for much of the time.

Its basically a U shaped trip - Ive suggested the Bellagio for a meeting point but we could easily do the trip in reverse .

Here is the plan ( and excuse me quoting here from various websites .
Meet at the Bellagio to the left of the conservatory under these chandeliers

http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/freebies/DSC_0615.jpg

Sights for the Bellagio include the Conservatory
Just beyond Bellagio's gracious lobby lies the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, a kaleidoscope for your senses. You'll want to take a moment to appreciate the intricate detail blooming before your very eyes. Submerge your soul in this magnificent garden abounding in fragrance, texture and color. Row upon row of exotic plants and flowers weave a glorious tapestry displaying the unique highlights of every season and holiday. There's no more inviting location for a photo opportunity. Take advantage of this unique setting and create a moment to cherish for years to come

Also in the Bellagio is the Chocolate Fountain

Willy Wonka would be so proud. Appear pastry chef Jean-Philippe Maury and his team have created the worlds largest chocolate fountain at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Three rivers of dark, two of milk and one of white twist and swirl from vessel to vessel, flood across then spill down to the next carefully positioned receptacle.

Standing at 27-feet tall, the masterpiece circulates more than 2,100 pounds of melted dark, milk and white chocolate at a rate of 120 quarts per minute.

From the Bellagio we can move on to Caesars Palace (without even having to go outdoors) and the Forum Shops and sadly ( and this is probably the only time you will ever hear this from me - there wont be much time for shopping because look what awaits us there

Atlantis Show -The Atlantis Show feature is an entertainment centerpiece of The Forum Shops at Caesars. Atlantis, located in the Roman Great Hall, consists of an enormous fountain which "comes to life" at regular intervals, featuring amazingly life-like animatronic characters. The wrath of the gods is unleashed on the city of Atlantis. Fire, water, smoke and special effects combine into an extravaganza as animatronic characters Atlas, Gadrius and Alia struggle to rule Atlantis. Surrounded by a 50,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, the mythical sunken continent rises and falls before your eyes. Show times are every hour form 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., every day of the year. The Atlantis show is free to the public.

The Festival Fountain - The Festival Fountain, centrally located in The Forum Shops at Caesars, Las Vegas, is a seven minute special effects fantasy spectacular. Visitors witness a wondrous transformation as monumental sculptures of mythological Roman gods come to life. Bacchus, god of merriment and wine, wakes up and decides to throw a party for himself and The Forum Shops visitors gather in the domed rotunda. He enlists the power of Apollo , Venus and Plutus in preparing the revelry. These characters conjure up a myriad of choreographed mythological images and designs. Special light effects emanate from the entablature that surround the fountain. Music, sound effects, lasers, animatronics and special scenic projections on the dome, combine together with a computer controlled waterscape effects, and theatrical lighting for a dazzling finale.

The Atlantis Aquarium - Providing the backdrop for the Lost City of Atlantis Show, the 50,000-gallon saltwater aquarium is one of the newest attractions at The Forum Shops. Visitors are in for an extra treat if their visit coincides with one of the two daily dive feeds. Dive feeds occur at 1:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., daily. Below-the-scenes tours of the support facilities are offered Monday through Friday at 3:15 p.m. Dive shows and tours are free of charge. The aquarium contains a variety of tropical marine fish including puffer fish, butterfly fish and trigger fish. The most notable species are the sharks and the rays. The aquarium currently supports 500 individual fish from over 100 species. Fish inhabiting The Atlantis Aquarium include both solitary and schooling fish, which are normally found around coral reefs. The size of the fish range from 2 inches to 4 feet.

Next on the trip we need to cross the road and walk up a bit to the Venetian ( which will be where we are having the crop the next day)

Its exterior, which re-creates most of the top landmarks of Venice (the Campanile, a portion of St. Mark's Square, part of the Doge's Palace, a canal or two), ranks right up there as a must-see.Stone is aged for that weathered look, statues and tiles are exact copies of their Italian counterparts, security guards wear Venetian police uniforms -- all that's missing is the smell from the canals. Inside, it's more of the same, particularly in the lobby area and the entrance to the extraordinary shops, as ceilings are covered with hand-painted re-creations of Venetian art.The Grand Canal Shoppes rank with the Caesars Palace shops as an absolute must-see. Like Caesars, the area is a mock Italian village with a blue, cloud-studded, painted sky overhead. But down the middle runs a canal, complete with singing gondoliers. (The 10-min. ride costs about $15, which seems steep, but trust us, it's a lot more in the real Venice.) The whole thing finishes up at a small re-creation of St. Mark's Square, which features glass blowers, traveling musicians, flower sellers, and the like. Expect to run into famous Venetians such as a flirty Casanova and a travel-weary Marco Polo. It's ambitious and a big step up from animatronic figures. Oh, and the stores are also probably worth a look -- a decent mixture of high-end fashion and more affordable shops.

Moving down from the Venetian we can go to the Flamingo with its Wildlife Habitat

Appropriately enough, the Flamingo resort is home to a flock of live Chilean Flamingos! These birds, as well as a collection of other feathered friends, fascinate our guests and populate our Wildlife Habitat. In addition to our namesake, you'll find swans, ducks, Koi, and turtles populating these grounds. All of our animals are carefully tended by experts and live on islands and streams surrounded by sparkling waterfalls and lush foliage.

And from there we can move south to Paris and experience a bit of the French charm

The outside reproduces various Parisian landmarks (amusing anyone familiar with Paris, as the Hotel de Ville is crammed on top of the Louvre), complete with a half-scale perfect replica of the Eiffel Tower. The interior puts you in the middle of a dollhouse version of the city. You can stroll down a mini Rue de la Paix, ride an elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower, stop at an overpriced bakery for a baguette, and have your photo taken near several very nice fountains.

From there its back across the road to the Bellagio fountains and we are back where we started.

I realise this route misses a lot - we dont get to see much of the south strip NYNY, Luxor etc - but I thought being that the weather is supposed to be hot hot hot it would be better to stay indoors as much as we could.
I severely doubt we will get all of this done anyway - but its a basic plan and we can stray from it at any time!!!

This sounds great Lauren, I want to be sure to see the Bellagio conservatory and botanical gardens but may not get there until about 11:00. I realize that there are a lot of people who will have suggestions but if at all possible I sure would like to be able to spend some time there either starting out or finishing up. Are you starting at 10:00a.m.? This sounds great to me....Thanks for taking the time to do a tour guide out look on it for us.

10 is a little early I think - Kim and I have to move hotels that day so we will need a little time to get ourselves organised - I think probably closer to 10.30 or 11 would be a good time though

Avery Stick on Name Tags are 2 1/3 by 3 3/8" Other tags I've seen are 4 x 3.

Do you want us to make a standard size tag or are we free to design what we want?

Feel free to be as creative as you like with the nametag - the more creative the better!!

Lauren, I'm taking this to mean that there are no restrictions on this--that it doesn't necessarily have to be "digital", or have to be paper, or have to be a certain size, or done with any pre-made label.

I'm taking this to mean that it can be any size, any material, and that the only requirement is that our user name be visible so that we can identify each other. (Can you tell I've got some ideas that are outside the box? :D )

Have I got it right? :D  :D

Can anyone tell what a "flattie" is?

kim
09-11-2007, 06:49 PM
A flattie is a small paper doll that gets to travel and be in pictures when the real person isn't able to go. :)

Hey ... if there are any flatties going, they better stay away from the chocolate fountain! :)

Oh the flatties are going alright! They might just fall into that chocolate fountain and drink it all up!

WhooHooo! Cheryl--it's me! Scamp! We did NKOTB back in May! Wow! I get to meet a fellow NKOTB-er!

I'm glad you posted that--I had in my head that we were meeting at 11. I've scanned back through the posts and it looks like between 10:30 and 11, and I've just assumed that because we were all meeting in real time and space, as opposed to cyberspace and DSP time, that it would be actual Las Vegas time. I'm right, aren't I--no one is converting to DSP time, are they?

However, my flight gets into Vegas at 8:40...so I should be there in plenty of time, right?! I'm so excited! :yahoo: :yahoo:
