View Full Version : Faded colors in gallery images
Just finished my first NKOTB layout and so disappointed to see how faded the colors look in the gallery. I use PSCS2 on Mac and can see the difference in coloring when I save for web. What am I doing wrong? :ron:
is this a new thing on your uploaded layouts? Hasn't been happening thus far? Can you see the fading in the Save for Web preview in your software, or not until you upload it here?
I remember someone talking about this in the granny thread but didn't think it applied to me at the time. Yes, I can see it happening in the Save for Web preview on my Mac -- if I open the windows side-by-side, the web preview is washed out. Don't think it's a DSP issue.
yes, I remember this being mentioned, and I don't recall what she did to fix it. Try restarting PSE holding ctrl-alt-shift to remove preferences and see if it still does it.
Got rid of preferences -- guess it's just the LO, Emma, but thanks for helping. I added a saturation adjustment layer -- LO looks a bit garish on my computer but does look better in the NKOTB gallery. Thanks much!!
if that's the only one it happens to, then c'est la vie. If it keeps happening, let us know!
I once had a PSE layout that would NOT resize without a big line down the left side. Never could get rid of it, no matter what I tried. Printed fine. I ought to try it again, was weird, back when I was first learning PSE.

I'm jumping in here because I think the posts you saw before in grannie thread were about my post on this faded colors. This is weird and won't help too much but in my case it resolved itself for a while and I even told Emma that it seemed much better but now I see it again. I use PSE 4 on MacBookPro so it's similar. I called Apple and spent a while on with a tech who said the same thing was happening when he used "save to web" under file dropdown. He suggested not using that method and to try saving and going through steps to adjust quality, etc. I'm not happy with the longer method and haven't mastered it at all to upload into DSP galleries. What I notice in my most recent faded uploads is that it is whenever there is an orange, peach or pink color that it is most noticable. The tech from Apple thought it had to do with the compression but why would it only be noticable in certain colors.
Any Mac/CS2 or PSE users out there that have thoughts on this are welcome to send PM or post if you know what would resolve this problem.
OMIOF5, I'll PM or post if I discover any new fixes for this. I just reread your post and now I'm really stumped because CS2 is a much more sophisticated program and I'm surprised this is happening...makes me think it's something other than compression.
Try this: When you save to web under file a little box comes up where you size and adjust quality, etc. There is also a little box to change for the Matte. Check what it says, Black, White and None are the options. I always try tokeep it on "none." I noticed color change when I had white or black as the matte. I apologize that I don't exactly understand the matte option but maybe someone who does will post.
my ability to offer any more advice here is all used up, but CS and PSE use the same Save for Web dialog and the function is identical.
I like omi's solution of adding a saturation boosting adjustment layer. Sometimes I do that when I print (color, lighting/contrast) if the printer can't get it right.

Lol, Emma. This is a weird occurrence....kind of like when you take your car to the mechanic with some noise and when you get there it won't do it. I'm really thinking it has something to do with compression. I'm going to try the added saturation adjustment layer. I have never done that so it should be interesting to see what I get.

Uh, I believe I learned that in DSU 160, Prof!
Mayyyy-beeeee..... :ron:
Edit: Just saw your 21-lb loss, Emma! Way to go!!!!!
Found it! This is from the Adobe PS Macintosh Forum at http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc105eb.
Topic: Why do my images appear washed out when I use Save for Web?
Q: The color/brightness/tone of my image changes when I use Save for Web. Why?
A: Photoshop is a color-managed application. The Web is not. Normally, when you view an image in Save for Web or ImageReady you are viewing it without color management and see it how it will appear when uploaded to the Web.
To minimize changes, Convert your image to sRGB (i.e from Edit menu choose Convert to Profile )before using Save for Web. You should also make sure that Save for Web has been configured so that images are displayed using the document color profile (see attached screenshot for guidance).
You should also ensure that your monitor properly calibrated and the gamma is set to 2.2.

My default is sRGB so will have to look at documents settings, I guess.

I had noticed it a bit in previous LOs. I usually scrap in real vibrant colors, though, so I think it just wasn't as noticeable. Plus, no one was judging it!
Sorry for the multiple posts, but I found a solution. Actually, I ended up keeping my version with the saturated layer because its web version is closest to the PS version and this one is being judged. For future, though, will probably just do this:
In PS or PSE, open the LO file.
Go to Save for Web.
In the upper right corner of the IMAGE is a little triangle (just to the left of Save).
Click on the triangle and choose Use Document Color Profile.
Made a HUGE difference!!! Yippeeeee....

Oh I'm so glad you did post this...First though, Emma way to go girl on the weight thing!
I can't believe it's such a simple thing Omiof5. I feel D U M B..though it is kind of an intermittent problem so I didn't really stress over it and I'm not entered into any judging, lol. I'm off to read that thread. Thanks so much!!!

Hey there,
Just a quick question. Don't they bundle Image Ready with the newer versions Photoshop? I love to use it to prepare my images for the web, it recommends optimization and shows you how your photos would look if you made those changes.
I thought you might want to see if you have this icon on your toolbox.

If you do, just click on it and it should open up this program.
I love it!
Thanks, Amber. I do have it -- have opened it a couple of times but was too lazy to try to figure it out. :o Think I need to look at it again, though, since you like it so much.

You ladies certainly have bunches of info. I'm thinking only Photoshop CS2 will have Image Ready but my dh has that on his PC. Alas, I didn't have $600 bucks Adobe wanted to give me an upgrade or a platform change version. I'd have to unretire and a get a job for that and decided I'll just use PSE4, lol. Thanks though. I'll look at it on the PC.
isn't the Document Profile the default? I wonder if you ever messed with that unintentionally??? Most of us work in sRGB by default as well.
Image Ready has a lot more options than the Save for Web feature, so it's worth a try if PS is freaking out on you. I think Image Ready is included in PS 7 and up, maybe CS and up, though. I don't use it for much of anything aside from animated GIF files, just because Save for Web does what I need it to! If I had to output for other people or forms for my job, I know it would get more of a work out! But for now it's just to my printer and to the gallery.
Don't think I changed the preference but may have. Just installed a new photo printer -- wonder if it changed any settings?

LOL, I know what you mean. I'm still confused about the whole layer mask thing, but I won't sit down and figure it out.
If we take a few baby steps, every once in a while, eventually we'll be pros.
Can't believe I'm up this late! Good night.

Hey, the only reason I have it is that I'm still involved in teaching part-time and could get the academic discount. Any college kids or teachers in your family? If so....
