Years ago, when I was young and the dinosaurs roamed my backyard, I was an avid photography hobbyist with a Nikon SLR. As I got older and lazier, I switched over to "point and shoots," and finally wound up digital, which I LOVE as my camera and Adobe Photoshop allows me to bring out the lurking artist within me.

I now want to return to my SLR roots and start getting back into photography as a serious hobby (and having a high stress occupation, I need one!). I want to buy a digital SLR and so far, from what I've read and from playing with a few at a local camera store, my heart seems to be yearning for the new Canon EOS 20D. Has anyone actually gone and shot in the field with it? Can anyone speak to comparing it to the Rebel or 10D? Will I become the Ansel Adams or Robert Frank of Santa Ana? (Okay, you don't have to answer that last one . . .)

Thanks!

Yes yes me me me I have it!!!!!
I have had the 20D for about a month or so now and I just love it :)
I also have the D60 which was released about 18 months before the 10D, it also is a great camera but the 20D is just so much better, especially with exposure, I can take files straight from the camera and they are perfect, they don't need any adjustment at all, no curves, no contrast, no colour adjustment, they are just spot on :)
Big files though, but then that means huge enlargements are possible.
All of my cameras have been Canon so the buttons and dials where all familar in their placement.
I would really reccomend this camera, but then you should get a hold of one and see how it feels in your hands, for me......its perfect :)

Karen,

I have always used a point and shoot camera. I presently have a Digital Sony PS1 and would like to upgrade and take some photography classes. Not being expienced in manual settings and etc. would the Canon Rebel be a better "entry level" for me?

Hi Glenda

I don't know much about the Rebel, I think here in the southern hemisphere it is called D300 or 300D, as an entry level slr it should serve your purpose well, I think the 20D is a great camera but may be abit over kill for a first digital slr, the rebel would be all you would need for a long time down the track :)

I've had the Canon 20D for about six months. LOVE IT! I've also had the 10D, D60, D30 and Rebel. (You might note a pattern -- I upgrade when a new model comes out because then I can still get an excellent price on ebay for my old one.) Each model has had significant improvements over the previous models and the 20D is worth the extra money over the 10D. It uses a newer version of Canon's digimarc software and photos are better out of the camera, as karenj said.

The Canon Rebel is an excellent entry level camera. It essentially has the same insides as the 10D (and at some point will have the same as the 20D), just not as many bells and whistles or as sturdy an exterior housing. Maureen

I shot with the 20D today. I have a 10D myself and love it. The 20D is great, a little bit faster and very comfortable to work with. I wasn't able to find the parameters in the menu. Anybody know if the camera has that? I upped the color saturation, contrast and sharpness in my 10D and felt like the colors looked kind of blah next to my camera. I'm wondering if that can be changed? I didn't notice a big difference in the image quality or anything other than the speed and the color. I love the added focal zones too! Great camera, but I'm not feeling the need to upgrade.....yet, since I just spent a big chunk on a lens. I'm definitely going to be staying with Canon.
