It seems every site has a tutorial on making rust, but they're all pretty much orange, brown, and gray cloudy images that suggest rust, but don't really LOOK like it

Any AWESOME rust tutorials out there? I like the results of escrappers rust tutorial, but as usual he left out the final steps of how to get those cool final touches, the smears on it

Here's the photo I'm using, and without hand painting I'm not able to get it right. I need something that's WOW! How'd he make that?!

did he MAKE that Emma or is it a photograph? He did a good job if he made it !!- if he did then he did it with multiple brushes and textures I guess and lots of layers!!! Try out the new filter from eye candy - it has a rust filter - its quite nice - not this quality but quite nice!!

NO, that's a photograph! It's from imageafter.com, and it's a web site full of free texture photos. Often I just crop them square and make patterns from them, but I want to make some of my own rust, digitally.

I have some cool renditions of the stuff, but nothing like that bumps and smears in that photo.

The bumps I think I can handle on another layer, but the smears...I don't know how to do that. I've used the Eyecandy Melt filter to do it, but I want to use stock filters.

Thanks for any help

Okay, here's my attempt: I used techniques from numerous tutorials and added a few of my own to copy that rusty photo
I'm still working on it, but it actually turned out to be pretty easy. My biggest problem is the brush I used to erase the orange and expose the gray metal. It needs tweaking...

Please make any suggestions, I love to hear negative feedback so I can improve; tfl!

Emma this is pretty awesome - you've given me a great idea - how bout in the new year we challenge ourselves to create something digitally - a bit like in software wars but perhaps things that are a little more useful for us in scrapping like this wonderful rust you have made, or a really decent mulberry paper, or a great pitted bronze -Im game if you are !!!!

Yes! I was just thinking the same thing last night trying to come up with a silly title for a chat like Elewars, but I'm no good at that kind of thing... But something like a chat where we all get started on an element and some kind of fun reward for the winner.

Textures, elements, fun photo editing, etc. That would be a blast!

Thanks for the comments. I'm hoping to refine the rust a little more, to make it have a lot of texture but still look really flat like the photo...I never thought I'd have a hard time making a flat element, usually it's difficult to add good depth, but for this much texture it's hard to keep it really flat. I made this is PSE, but I think I have to make a brush in PS and import it to do a better job of erasing the orange edges.
If I add a rotation jitter in PS, will that "follow" the brush? Or will just the tip shape show up?

a rotation jitter will make the brush tip rotate at different angles ( depending on how much jitter you use- it will follow the brush only if you select direction - and then if you add jitter it will only partially follow the brush - that sounds like gobbledegook I know sorry!!!!

yeah... uh...

I think I see what you mean. What I mean is if I save a brush with its settings with rotation jitter, then load that brush into PSE, will it have a rotation jitter?

Only one way to find out, I guess. Does anyone know? My problem is that when erasing an edge, the brush won't rotate, so the pattern is way too uniform. In PS, I just set a rotation jitter to give some randomness, but in PSE, I have to brush a little, then open the Brush options, turn the angle, brush a little more...just trying to figure out a better way, but not sure if brush settings like that import, or just the tip shape.

Anyway, if you know a solution to my jitter problem, help me out, LOL!

Ahhhhhhhhh I see what you mean - im thinking that no it maybe wont work in pse- it may not even want to accept the brush with those settings - but its worth a go !!!!

The brush worked great in PSE3, from PS CS. I added all sorts of settings, and they all took. I use rotation jitter a lot, so it's nice to know I can import a brush with that. I ended up just using a stock PSE brush I found while playing around.

Can we combine the Element creation chat with the themed element from the Favorite Element thread?

Anyone have any suggestion/requests for that? Would be so fun!
