Hiya,

I got PSP9 for Christmas (and PS CS, so I'm really thrilled!) and have a question. Emma once told me in her PSP class that in PSP8 it is not possible to add a border to a layer, but only to the whole image, something that always annoyed me with PSP8. But she also said that with PSP9 it is possible. Now I've been trying to find this feature for the last 2 days, but without success.

EMMA, if you are out there: Where can I find it?????? Or did I somehow completely misunderstand you????

No, I said it, and I can't remember how. My PSP9 expired, and I never upgraded because I never registered my v8  I don't even remember if I added the border, or if I just read that it's possible. I think I read it in the New Features list for PSP9...or maybe the Jasc forum ???

Maybe YOU can me ME register my v8 so I can upgrade, LOL!

Hopefully someone else knows either how to add borders to layers or how to get my serial number so I can prove I own PSP

The best way to add a boarder to a layer is select all...I usually fill with white or a patern...then contract by as many pixels you would like...then cut or deleted...is this what you are meaning??? if you want to add side or top boarders I use the selection tool...Hope this helps :)

Emma, I don't know if this was a fluk or not but the only version of PSP I ever bought was 5 & 6. I didn't upgrade for years! I down loaded the trial version of PSP8. Then when I was going to buy it, Version 9 was out, and I couldn't find a active link to buy and download version8 anymore. so I called Jasc and asked them all the questions I had and they suggested version9 to me. I decided to buy online so I could download and when I went to purchase 9, there was a link on the page to do an upgrade, so I thought why not? Maybe I qualified!!! But it stated only an upgrade from 8 to 9. I tried it and typed in my email address which has never changed and it found me I guess in their database and I got Vs.9 for $45.00!!
It's worth a try! I will go and see if I can still find that link on their site, and let you know!

Here's the link: http://www.jasc.com/products/paintshoppro/pspupgrade.asp?
I know you said you hadn't registered your version of 8, but if you bought it online they should remember you anyway. Like I said they remembered me from years ago and I know, I didn't register my version 6, I just bought it from JASC! I see it cost around $50.00 and I think that after I started to buy it online, another promotional offer came up offering me and additional amount off of the price!

I tried to upgrade, that's how I know I'm not "official"
I threw away the box not realizing my reg code was in it. I' haven't installed my own software in a long time, and I've never registered anything. Anything that needs upgrading, Troy takes care of :o
Anyway, I'll get around to calling them and finding out what I can do. It was a promo copy they sent DSP, so they might have record of it.
I probably won't upgrade unless I teach another PSP class, or my current one needs updated someday.

PSP9-ers! Keep looking for that layer border for Rikki! I'm pretty sure it's in there :)
Rikki, try looking up Border in the PSP Help file and see what that says.

I think the way MA#3 suggested is the only way you can do it - only what I did was select the object on the layer, then expand the selection by 15 and then floodfill with a color on another layer.

I know exactly what you are talking about here is how you do it (it is soooo simple)

select the layer you want to add a border to

now go up to the top menu (the one with drop downs for file, edit, ect.) and get the drop down menu for:
<image> select <picture frame>
and viola! scroll through the different frame options to find what you want. note the options that you have right under orientation preview click the little circle-y dot for 'frame current layer'

hope that is clear enough :)

Wow, is that stuff cool - did you see the stained glass one? and there are some there that act like masks, too. Thanks for finding that! There is so much that this software can do that I haven't even scratched the surface of!

Actually, that is great, but it frames the whole layer. I was thinking of how to frame just the object on the layer. For that, I guess there's no way but to select, expand the selection and flood fill.

really? there's no way to put the Border command on just a layer? I KNOW I read that somewhere...wait, you mean it frames the whole layer by putting a square around it? Yes, that's what I was talking about.

To make an irregularly-shaped frame, you have to select the object and expand, then fill the space. Photoshop has a cool command called Stroke that does this automatically, but I haven't found anything similar in PSP. One way I made it easier was to customize my keyboard commands for Expand Selection so it's faster to get to, not so tedious. Then hit F for Fill Tool. You can change the Match Mode on the Fill Tool to Opacity so it only fills the transparent pixels around the object and do it all on the same layer.

To select something quickly, use the Magic Wand Tool and choose All Opaque in the Match Mode menu. Then just click on the object, and the wand will select all the Opaque pixels in the layer, no matter how oddly shaped

This picture frame feature frames the whole image, that's exactly what I don't want. I just thought that you, Emma, could remember how to do the layer border just like the stroke feature in PS. The selection, expand thing I know, but then if one expands too much the corners get kind of roundish (as you pointed out in your class :) ).
Anyway, I'll survive without this, I just thought it might be nice to know how to do it, if it was possible at all, since I couldn't find it.

Thanks a lot for your help.

select the layer you want to add a border to

<image> select <picture frame>

That's how to do it, just check the Frame Current Layer box. Also, if when expanding a selection the corners get too rounded, use the Edit Selection Mode (like in the lesson for resizing a selection to get not-rounded corners), and use the Deform Tool to make the Selection larger.
hth!

Oh right, maybe I should read the posts a little more carefully :o. Off to check this "frame current layer" thing.

when i add a border, i use the shape tool. the rectangle one.
it's really usefull!! :D :D
i don't use the one on the edit... cause it flattens the layers,,
grrrr.. it makes me so mad.. hahaha

Yes, this is one of the ways to make a mat in my DSU 130 class, along with selections, expanded selections, lots of good ways to do it, thanks for pointing that out!

Also, check the Creating Your First Page PSP tutorial; it has instructions on adding a small black line border to the journaling box that should be helpful

Top menu....

Image>addBorders>set the parameters and go

this works if you border them as you build them....

if you dont do that and need to add a border later... the framer has a layer option..

image>pictureframe> left hand side... (frame Current Layer) .. now this leaves you with the problem of having a frame and not just a border.. but you can put simple borders into your frame pallette fairly easily.
