I am a total novice to digital scrapbooking so apologise if my question is very basic.

I made my first layout using photos saved from my digital camera and everything worked as it should. For my next layout I want to use some photos that were taken several years ago on an ordinary camera. So I scanned them on my scanner (it is only a basic one - Epson Perfection V100 Photo). I scanned at 300 dpi.

The problem is that when I open the photos in PSE 5 they appear too small on the canvas. They are only one quarter of the size of the square block with the diagonal lines. So the white three quarters blocks out any other photo I want to add. And I don't know how to make them any larger. I tried scanning at 600 dpi but it didn't make any difference.

I would really appreciate any advice or assistance so that I can learn what I am doing wrong.

I don't use PSE5 - I use CS2 but you should be able to resize the photo. In CS2 you go to Edit - Transform - Scale, hold down the shift key and put it in the corner and drag to the size you want. The shift key keeps the picture from being distorted. If this doesn't help, perhaps someone with PSE5 will comment or you might try using your program's help and search for resizing a photo.

kydeb is right - try resizing it before going further, but if you need to try again...

You probably need to either bump up the dpi, or up the output size. If you bump up dpi, the photo will remain the same size, but you'll have more pixels to stretch out, or enough to go in and just resize it.

It depends on what settings are available to you on your scanner as to which way works easiest.

Janet is right .. scan it at as high a dpi as you can on your scanner and when you take the photo into PSE, increase the size using the Image Size and increase the size by 10% increments each time .. it will increase the size without too much loss of quality .. good luck!
