I have set this up in the calendar but I don't want anyone to think I'm an expert on Heritage Albums :) Please give any input you can in this thread! For the first on I though we'd chat about Planning / Organizing the album, probably the most daunting part when faced with so large a topic. I did Google the topic and found some help here (http://scrapbooking.about.com/library/reviews/blCYOHAbookreview.htm) - this is to a book review but scroll down & follow various links.
If anyone know any more please do add :0

The calendar info is here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=336&day=2005-1-6&c=1)

5th January, 10 - 11 p.m EST (my South African friends, that is 5.00 a.m - in this hot weather you can be there!)
Each week we will work on a page for our Heritage Album. I will use my kit, "As Time goes By" which is in The Shop at DSP but of course, feel free to use whatever you'd enjoy using
Come along with your photos and ideas, settle down with your beverage of choice - or whatever is appropriate for your time zone and let's have a great time & hopefully produce a great album!
Link for "As Time Goes By" kit
http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&manufacturers_id=15&products_id=793

This week it is simply a get together to chat about what we'd like to do - PLEASE come along with your ideas - I'm NOT an expert, I simply set it up because I'd like to do a Heritage Album & hope you would too :) so we can all learn together!
See you, Meryl

I had not really though in terms of topic :) simply a get together where we can chat about what we are doing, exchanging tips.......... Seeing as we worked on grandmothers this last week, the obviouse choice would be Grandfathers for this week.

Hope you can make it!

Hi Everyone..
During the first chat I had posted some links to sites that will help with your genealogy, these sites don't really help in making your heritage scrapbooks but will help you find out more about your past which will help you find inforamtion for your scrapbooks. I think it would be great if everyone would post their idea's on making a heritage book, I for one know more about researching genealogy than scrapping it.I have been working on my family genealogy for over 30 years and so far have finished 25 heritage albums, most of them paper, I have just started working on doing them digital. A few of you contacted me and asked me to post some links so thats what you will find here. I hope you find something that will help you and if I can help in any way please let me know. I'll try to post mostly free sites but a few may be pay sites but they are some of the best I have found. These should get you started if you need some type of special link please let me know.

I will certainly be at the chat tomorrow....would not miss it.....I think I am the only one that has not done a page yet.......I certainly have the kits, which I have down loaded, and of course my own ideas......but I seem to have a block of some sort, but I am sure I will sort it out in time.....in the past few weeks I have sorted out photographs etc, it is just the starting which does not come.......is this 'scapbooking block' ???
hopefully (maybe) after tomorrow's chat I will get going on this project.
take care......check you out in the chat tomorrow

Thank you to all those who came to this weeks chat - its fun to see our albums starting tp grow! For this week we are working on pages for a contest - to be included in this you need to do a LO including:
a frame, a photocorner and a tag - you can make them yourself, get from a kit, whatever but those 3 things must be included.
When you are done please post here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=847&password=) if they are in some other gallery I won't see it & it won't be judged!
They must be in the gallery by 10.00 p.m. EST Monday 24th Jan.
I look forward to seeing lots of entries!
See you next week :0)

Because of the delay in being able to upload the sketch I have decided to extend the deadline for the sketch contest for our Heritage Chat.
For the contest, I have modified a Betty Higgins sketch for you to use - it is a double page, but the 2nd page (right hand side) is optional. The request was for a sketch which gave plenty of space to journal, hope you like what I've come up with! If you do the optional 2nd side, you can also uses a few of the little squares for more journaling. Modify it to the size you scrap, but keep as closely as you can to the original sketch. I'm so looking forward to seeing your entries!
Entries must be in by 10 p.m. EST Tuesday 8th February & Must be uploaded to the "Our Heritage" Gallery.
You will find the sketch here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=23280&password=&sort=2&size=medium&cat=500&page=1)
I'm looking forward to lots of entries!

This week in our heritage scrap & chat we will chat about making backgrounds using scans of book pages - I have used these on my pages:
Page One (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=25264) and page two (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=25263)

If you'd like to work along during the chat come along with a few scanned pages, otherwise just take some notes - I've found them fun to do, and the work very well with "modern" photos too - I've used one for the Lo of Josh I did at Christmas:

Look forward to seeing you at the chat!

This week in our heritage scrap & chat I will announce the winner for last weeks challenge - chat about making backgrounds using scans of book pages.
After that I though it may be a good time for each of you to share just one exciting thing about scrapbooking thet you discovered, saw, heard, whatever, this last week - maybe new technique that you saw, a wonderful layout which particularly caught your eye, a tip for the software that you use. Come along and share the good news!
Look forward to seeing you at the chat!

I haven't come to any of the chats yet, but I have a question for the group. Perhaps some of you have some ideas.

How do you scrap genealogy where there are no photos? I have one photo of one grandmother. I have scrapped that. There are no others that I know about.

I do have wedding photos for my parents, which haven't been scrapped yet, but which will be.

I did look at the layouts where you used documents for the backgrounds. I have some documents including 1930 census for my parents, and all of the uncles and aunts except one. I thing Uncle David must have been in the hospital and ancestry.com hasn't indexed hospitals yet. I haven't given up.

I can't find my grandfather in the 1920 census. He was in the US, but I believe he wasn't counted that year.

I have jpegs of the census documents and also of a lot of the ship manifests for almost everyone. And my great grandmother's 1923 New York City death certificate which gives her parent's names.

But no photos. Help!

MaureenH

I wouldn't use any meaningful documents as background unless it is duplicative. You and others in the future will want to be able to read those valuable documents easily. I've added to document layouts things like a map of the area where the ancestors lived as background, images of the area or country where they were from, such as the tulips or windmills from Holland. You might include a small photo of yourself or the person who got the census data. I'd also mat or frame the document similar to the way you'd treat a photo.

You could always try to get some historical photos of the area they lived in or if you know particular stories, photos or clip art relevant to the story.

In some cases what I have is a photocopy of a microfilm. In other cases what I have are digital files from the Web. The digital files are better than the photocopies in almost all cases. In the case of my grandfather's ship manifest, the digital copy was cleaned up and can be read, the photocopy was from an allmost unreadible microfilm page.

Since I only digital scrapbook, I wouldn't be using originals anyway, but I decided I had better make what I am considering clear before anyone gets frightened that I might destroy a piece of history. :)

Excellent thought. I have the addresses of the Lower East Side apartments my mother and my father lived in in 1920. She was 11 and living with her parents. He was in his early 20s and his younger sister and brother came to the US to live with him in 1921. My understanding is that I might be able to get photos of the two buildings. I need to check that out.

But even if I can't, there should be loads of historical photos of the Lower East Side of New York in the 1920s.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Starling

OK, so I can do something with New York City in the 1920s. What do I do with Rhodes in 1900. Or Jerusalem, roughly at the same time. There might be photos of Jerusalem, but I don't think I'll find any for the Island of Rhodes.

I've got a couple of heritage pages to share. I've been doing my husband's parents from his wallet photos.

His Parents (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=32313&cat=500&page=1)

and

His Mother (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=32548&cat=500&page=1)

Both photos needed a lot of work after 45 years in a wallet. The photo of his mother didn't have much background left above the bush so I had to reconstruct it. They both had a lot of dust, scratches and dents. I also scanned them larger than the originals, which were pretty obviously wallet sized.

I've uploaded a layout from the ad inspiration given at the last chat. It is HERE (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=32842&cat=500&page=1)

A while back I asked how to scrap an event where there are no photos to be had. It was suggested that I go online and find historical photos to use. I did that and I finally made the first Lower East Side page. The ad worked very well and it was interesting working from an ad.

Well, now I know why I couldn't find this thread. No one has posted a link to it, or updated the heritage challenge for over a month.

Is there a specific challenge for this week? Or two week period? Or month?

I like challenges because well... they, well.... They challenge me. :)

I know I've continued to post heritage layouts, and that I'm not the only one doing that. But I haven't been able to locate this thread to post a link for the last one or two.

Am I the only one who missed having this thread available?

A reminder that this weeks challenge is "Where they Lived" Lauraloube has done a lovely page, "Isle of View" (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=37521&cat=847&page=1) and I also spotted showme's "The Glory of Easter" (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=37778&cat=847&page=1) several - like me! are still catching up on the "How they met" challenge, some lovely pages! I fully intend working on this weeks challenge today................ One suggestion from last week, if you do page in response to a challenge, it makes it easier to find if you name the challenge in the heading of your layout - just a thought :0)

I have added a heritagy kit to my shelf in the store, (based on my True Love (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=37624&cat=847&page=1) page) called Beads & Things (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&manufacturers_id=15&products_id=1300) - you may like to take a look?

Look forward to seeing you all at the next chat 10.00p.m. EST,
till then take care of yourselves and happy scrapping :0)

Here is my take on the Bronx (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38085&cat=847&page=1) in the 1940's and 1950's when I lived there. We actually moved out in 1965, but it hadn't changed that much yet at that point. A few years later my neighborhood burned down. It looked like Dresden in 1945. Like there had been a war and the buildings had lost.

The apartment house in the photo isn't the one I lived in, but it is on the same street a couple of blocks away from where I lived.

All the photos came from the Web.

Feathebed Lane is the street I grew up on. No one expects a street called Featherbed Lane in a city as big as New York, but the street almost certainly predates the City. The layout is here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38746&nocache=1).

I'd like to say a little bit about posting links to the heritage layouts in the forums.

Why do it? Well, for one, I'm unlikely to see your layout if you don't. But when I see a link in a thread I'm active on, I generally will click on the link and I'll comment on the layout.

Even when I'm not doing a particular challenge, like the one about cars (no cars in my family until my generation, so no heritage pages either) it doesn't mean I don't want to see YOUR layout.

I don't think I'm alone. There are so many layouts in the gallery. If you want comments make it a bit easier on all of us and help us find yours.

It certainly would Karen, would have to get round the everyone using different software issue though, but could give it a try? Do we have any experts?

Karen Bowers
08-31-2005, 01:32 AM
i'm not an expert, but i'm building some skills. burning and dodging are 2 of my newest tools, and i discovered the "heal" tool in PSE is great for torn photos. playing with brightness and contrast and sharpening have also become natural skills for me now.

even if each of us only has 1 trick to share, there should be plenty for us all to learn.

I would be interested in this. How do you get involved in it?

Elisabeth
08-31-2005, 02:53 AM
Premier, join us in chat Wednesdays at 10 pm Eastern. We will vote on a layout posted in the Heritage gallery for the last week's challenge, then decide on a new topic for the next week. We often have a side chat while we're at it, so Karen's suggestion is a valid one. Perhaps we could concentrate on one software per week, since it will be in snippets around the other conversation, eh? As opposed to getting them all in on one night.

Restoring photos: I use PSP8, and play a lot with clarify and contrast. I also am fond of scratch fix and clone tools. When working with sepia or greyscale photos, I have been known to ease the monochromatic tone to match the kit or background paper better. Your brain doesn't register the tint, just the fact that it's pleasing to the eye with the colors around it.

I have in no way come close to getting the fabbity effects Karen has with her photos. I'm waiting for Kareneffects 101!

This one is the oldest document I have, my Great-Grandfather's application to his church to emmigrate to America. This is what another ancestral archiver told me, anyway. I could make out a few things like his birthdate and Swedish name before he anglisized it.

I have other precious (to me) documents I hope to scrap this week, too. I hope no one minds multiple postings. I see several of us make more than one submission a week. It punches up the gallery, I think.

Here is my layout for the Jewelry Challenge.Click Here! (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=58471&cat=847)

I don't really have any special jewelry that has been handed down to me so I did the history of cameos. I have been wanting to use the Somewhere in Time PTP kit and there is a cameo on that kit so I thought I would just do that. My grandparents house burned down when my Mom was in the 7th grade and they lost everything including photos, journals, everything my grandpa brought back from WWII even their wedding rings. So anyway this is what I did. I am facinated by cameos!! I think they are beautiful!!

I've uploaded my jewelry page for this week's heritage. Most of our heritage jewelry was stolen after a burglary at our home shortly after my mom's death. Her watch remained. It was lovely to see such a large and lively group at Heritage Chat this morning - thanks so much for coming :0)

Our winner this week was Wyogal for here lovely page My Grandma's Watch (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=58726&cat=847&page=1) for this she wins a coupon for a page kit from DSP. Well done Linda!

Some of you have had a bit of a problem getting your prizes - the way I do it is to ask Angie to send the prize, copying you the message - PLEASE if you are a winner, save this email and if it does NOT arrive within a week, reply to me on this same message, otherwise it becomes very tricky to track back.

The topic for next week is "Porches" - steps, anything near the house, but outdoor I suppose I could say? Sounds interesting, some members have waited a long time for this on - look forward to seeing lots of lovely pages.

Please make use of our Heritage Forum thread - post you LO link there, keep it active, it is always a good place to give you news too, go to the link and subscribe to it so you get email updates (click the little down arrow beside thread tools) - if you have posted there, though, you will get an email if anyone replies.

I have a new kit in the store A Second Story to Tell, (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1723) you may like to look at it, I have been enjoying using it for pages from our last holiday, still quite a few to go! I am working on an embellishment set, Digital Date, .png's for you to date your pages - I have included on several of my newest pages, here's one (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=58990&cat=500&page=1) (bottom right corner). Basically they are mix and match - I'd love any ideas on what would be useful to you? I have the months as round words, year's straight across and some little tags. Feedback much appreciated :0)

Remember if you have daylight saving coming up, same time 10.00 EST, same place next week....... good for me :) an extra hour's sleep :)

I came across this poem I saved a long time ago. I thought maybe we could do a challenge around the poem some week.
STRANGERS IN THE BOX

Come, look with me inside this drawer
In this box I've often seen,
The pictures black and white;
Faces proud, still, serene.

I wish I knew the people,
These strangers in the box.
Their names and all their memories
Are lost among my socks.

I wonder what their lives were like?
How did they spend their days?
What about their special times?
I'll never know their ways.

If only someone had taken the time,
To tell who, what, or where...
These faces of my heritage
Would come to life again.

Could this be the fate
Of the pictures we take today?
The faces and the memories,
Someday to be passed away.

Make time to save your pictures,
Seize the opportunity when it knocks;
Or someday you and yours could be
The Strangers in the Box!

Here's the link to my porch layout for this week's Heritage Chat. The house is gone now. How I wish I had taken pictures when they had the white picket fence and the rhododendrons in blossom, leaves on the trees - the huge trunks holding the hammock. This was the only picture, probably taken at the time they purchased the place, when their son returned from WWII and took over the family farm.

Meryl
11-03-2005, 10:08 PM
Sorry Joan, I just didn't get a chance to get it posted yesterday - glad you are keen to get started!

For this next week's challenge we are taking the theme "Thankfulness" - you may of course do Thanksgiving itself, or, if all you know about Thanksgiving is what you have seen on TV, like me :), then a page on thankfulness in a more general way, with a heritage theme e.g.. you may have a Grandmother, Grandfather to whom you owe a great deal?

For the following week, I wondered if you would not like to use Laura's lovely poem as inspiration? It is posted in this forum (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2748&page=7&pp=15) , just scroll down. You would not all have to use the actual poem on the page, but use it as inspiration - Why do I scrap my Heritage Photos? what does preserving my past mean to me? Just a thought......

Our winner this week was NoJiMom for her lovely Grandma's Front Steps (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=59012&cat=847&page=1) - enjoy your shopping, Nancy!

Look forward to seeing you next wee, and maybe some of you may like to join me at my Christmas Chat on Monday 10.00 p.m. EST - details are here on the calendar (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=539&day=2005-11-7&c=1)

Many of the old photography tools I still have and displayed them in this layout. The albums are not acid free; the photo corners packages are still unopened, and the pictures have not yet been scrapped. The camera that my mom used and I used during my young years (with embarrassment because of the accordian bellows - unlike my friends' cameras) sits on a display shelf.

I've just uploaded by very first LO to DSP - my take on the "strangers in the box" poem.
I see my role in scrapbooking as an archivist for future generations. I hope my son will appreciate the information that will be available to him about his own past as well as that of his forbears.
If I do say so myself I'm quite pleased with the result. I called it Window to the Past (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=61921&cat=847)

ellen
11-30-2005, 02:17 PM
Our theme for the week is creating a holiday recipe page (I won last week, but it was a very close win among three of us...sorry you had the outage, Webfrau).
O.k., I've been working on this, and I must have redone this about five times. I want it to look like a page in a recipe book without overtaking the page with Christmas colors. Since I don't make this recipe until Christmas Eve, photos of the pudding will be added later. I also might change the size of this page after determining what kind of booklet this will go into - may be oblong rather than square. In other words, this is not done yet!

I don't do cookies, either, but the most sacred of holiday traditions seems to be a big crockpot of spiced cider, or Wassail (one of many different kinds of wassail). so here is my offering for the week.

Thanks so much all of you who so enthusiasticall chatted in this weeks chat, lovely to have had so many :) As most of you know our chat was abruptly cut shot last week with the site going down, so this week we have 2 winners:

myjalark's We Remain (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=71116&cat=847)
and

jfrieker's Lorie's School Photos (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=71545&cat=847)

It was pointed out that We Remain was not a shool topic, after winners were announced, sorry I had not noticed, however a lovely page and worthy winner. Congrats to you both, I have emailed/pm'ed you both with the winner requirements.

The topic for next week is "Something Precious to me, with a story to tell" - this could be jewellery, a piece of furniture, anything that is special to YOU and who's story you'd like to preserve.

Post them here (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=847).

Wish I were more experienced at digi-scrapping but I'm just now taking my secnd DSU class. Hope you have this again in the future, though, Meryl, because I would love to learn how to use my 19th century photos.

My question for now, though, is about whether these brushes can be used for PSE. I went to the Adobe site, saw that the downloads were for PS, but can't find any info about PSE. Can anyone enlighten me? :o

Here's my headlines layout for this week. I've been wanting to do a layout for my father-in-law's time in the USMC during WWII and include my mother-in-law's 40's Hawaiian swimsuit. We also have his "dogtag", but where is it when you're doing a layout?!

I see a few Headlines in the gallery, I know many of you are "last minuters" so maybe the gallery will be full when I wake up in the morning LOL!

I just have to tell you about the brushes that I have been working tirelessly on - at last they are in the store I got my daughter to help me to draw them and i did the cleaning up and making into doodle brushes - I hope some of you use them (remember, even if you don't use Photoshop all DSP brushes have the .png files so anyone can use them)

Click here to see meryl's Doodley Brushes (http://store.digitalscrapbookplace.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=doodley):)

I especially like the little boy ones :)

the winner of this weeks contest is Ellen for her "After Pearl harbour" (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=78649&cat=847) - well done Ellen, please send me an email (shzen@mweb.co.za) with your name, screenname and email address to claim your prize of a pagekit.

Next weeks challenge - carrying on with the headlines theme - I want you to research the year someone dear to you was born - could be yourself, not Sally though, she says she's not Heritage yet :) a parent, so like you headlined page but more specific. Have fun and lets have lots of lovely pages.

I hit research gold today and wanted to share with everyone. I was doing research for this weeks challenge and came across this sight.

http://www.answers.com/

Just put the year you want to research in the search. It breaks it down into major events by year and even by month. It will tell you who else was born that month and year and on and on. It is a major find!! It helped me tremendously. It seems pretty accurate thus far. So I am pretty sure it is a valid sight. Oh be sure and keep scrolling down. The stuff gets more interesting the further down you scroll! LOL!

Anyway, I hope that helps. I sure am looking forward to seeing everyone's layouts this week. GRREAT idea for a challenge Meryl!! Thank you so much!

Not many pages uploaded this last week, but what we lacked in numbers we made up for in quality - outstanding pages :) Our winner tis week was Ballykissangel with her beautiful page Headlines 1946 The Year I Was Born (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=80102&cat=847) - well done Maureen! Bye the way, I see she has uploaded another stunning "yearthat was" page to the gallery - do take a look :)

Well I rushed home with my newly scanned photos - not the ones I was lookin for but acceptable substitutes. Hurriedly finished the LO, rushed into the chat room then had that feeling that something was not right!!!
You've no idea how annoyed I was to realise that because daylight saving has ended here, we put our clocks back at the weekend and I missed the chat. I was an hour too late! This means that I won't be coming to Heritage chat again until either you change your clocks or it's next summer for us!
You'll have to be good about posting the next challenge for the week.

I uploaded my two recipes anyway:

I know, I have been whining for "music" for several weeks so I had better have something. The first is a mysterious instrument DH's Dad had under his bed. I mentioned having played an "auto harp" and he thought this was one. Well it isn't. Through some detective work on the web I discovered it is a ZITHER. There is most of a book with it but it is in German. Also some German sheet music. All of the papers are in a big envelope postmarked "1937". It looks like you are playing a guitar with your left hand and a piano with your right little finger while strumming with the rest of your fingers.
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=84838&cat=500&ppuser=891
The other layout is of Roman's grandfather's clarinet and the Sundays of music he remembers as a child visiting his grandparent's houses.
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=84912&cat=500&ppuser=891
There may be more to come if we can get to the other instruments at his dad's apartment.

I'm not at all musically inclined but the words to a relatively new country song always makes me think of those who died to young. My youngest aunt, Helen, was killed in the worst school explosion in the history of the United States. She wasn't quite 17 so the words,

"It ain't fair; you died too young,
Like the story that had just begun,
But death tore the pages all away.
God knows how I miss you.
All the hell I've been through,
Just knowin' no-one could take your place.
An' sometimes I wonder
WHO'D YOU BE TODAY?"

seem to fit this picture and story so well.
