Okay so i decided to go back to school for graphic design (print and web) so I got a mac since thats what they use. it has taken some time getting use to.

One thing thats driving me crazy is that with my PC i could see one thumbnail on my folder so I didn't have to open the folder to remember what the kit looked like... are you still following?

well now I cant do that with a mac....can I??? I have to open it before I can see the thumbnails.. please help. I don't have time to open every folder to see what is in it :( I have named the kits accordingly but it's been a few months since i've been able to scrap so i forgot what some of the kits looked like

Do you have an alternative way of seeing all your products? do you create a sheet of a ll thumbnail previews ...contact sheet? or do you print all of them out?

I should have been out the door five minutes ago so short answer.

Although I've used Macs forever, I've never really thought about this. I assume your Finder windows are in the Icon view. You can change any individual folder icon by clicking on the folder, going to File > Get Info. Then click on the icon in the upper left corner of the window and paste in whatever you want.

The part I can't answer is how to produce an icon from the contact sheet, but I would LOVE to know the answer to that. I use both Windows and Mac OS -- once you're used to the Mac, you'll fall in love with it, I promise.

Hopefully, you bought AppleCare with your Mac. If not, would advise doing that if it's not too late. Apple's customer care for its AppleCare customers is fantastic! Also, would suggest you register in Apple's discussion forums at http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa and post your question there. As with DSP, I find my quickest and most accurate help generally comes from other users.

Welcome to the Mac world. There are quite a few of us at DSP, so please don't hesitate to PM with questions. If I don't know the answer, I can usually find out.

So much for my SHORT answer -- now I should have been out of the house 10 minutes ago!

Thanks for taking the time to do that!! I didn't get the apple care cuz my teachers said theyve never had a problem with their macs so I took my chances!!

Okay so i tried that...but now instead of a folder icon it shows Jpeg or png... whichever I put there... not the actual picture ughhh....

:yahoo: Hey, I got love and didn't even answer your question!!!

Your teachers were right about Macs having very few problems. I always buy AppleCare because they will answer almost any kind of question -- software, networking, etc. Must say I've always felt like I got more than my money's worth.

It's always frustrating to learn a new platform -- I felt the same way when Apple switched to a Unix OS. Don't want to start any hardware wars, but remember that Windows is modeled on the Mac OS!! PCs are great machines, but I think you'll eventually be won over to the Mac.

My son, daughter, and I all have both platforms in our houses. Daughter uses PC for business, and son was a dyed-in-the-wool PC guy until I gave each household a Mac for my grandchildren. Now....well, let's just say that we would be an all-Mac family if my kids didn't need PCs for their business software.

As for Preview....I've used Macs since the mid-80's and don't use Preview much. My daughter does wonders with it, though, and now that you've shared your solution, I definitely need to do some investigating. In almost all cases, if you use Apple software the way it was intended, you can do anything -- and without constant crashes.

Again, feel free to PM me if you have questions...would love to help if I can and would love to have you keep teaching this old dog some new tricks.

Thanks!! I did not like the mac at first... i've had it for over a month now... In the beginning I was always mad because it didn't do something that my pc did, but then i always find out it does indeed do what pc does but only BETTER :) It jus takes awhile to figure it out. But so far i'm pretty amazed. It proves me wrong everytime i think its lacking!!!

I'm not a Fan of the new vista stuff. There are some PC's at school in the normal computer lab (not my graphics one) that have the new vista and I HATE IT. Why do they hve to go fixing stuff that isn't broken? I do power points for my speech class and I cant figure out vista!! It takes me twice as long to get something done there!

Got a kick out of this because I got a similar email from my son after he played with the Mac I sent to the grandkids. He said that, as much as he hated to admit it, every time he got stuck on the Mac, he would think, "What is a logical way to do it?" and it nearly always worked. After 20 years of trying to convince me that Macs are inferior to PCs, I know that was a tough thing for him to admit.

Again, when you get stuck, go to Apple Forums. You can find almost any answer there with good search techniques.

Congrats on going back to school! I really want to do the same thing. May I ask where you are going? There are so many schools, I have no idea where to even start looking. I wish I could find a reputable online school. GOOD LUCK!!! -c-

well from others I have heard that Phoenix school is good if you like depending on others to get you a good grade (most of the work you do online is group work...some liek that some dont...not for me!) And then I ALMOST went to Arts institute online but felt is was too fishy and too expensive. I had to move to go to the school of choice...since i decided against online classes. The school I am attending now is amazing i'm glad I chose it!! They are 12 week classes instead of 16 week and some of the work is done online as well so i really really like it. There is group work but mostly individual... if you wnat to know the school i am talking about pm me... I dont want to say it for everyone to see.... incase theres crazies out there :)

We're switching to Macs at work ... there's one sitting on my desk waiting for me to make it my friend. I keep putting it off.

Lucky Girl! Since my employer only went to SP2 because they absolutely had to this past spring, I don't think we'll be making the move any time soon. -c-

Just be patient for the first month or so -- read the posts above. I promise you'll love the Mac!!!

I went to a Mac platform about seven months ago after decades on Windows OS. I absolutely love the Mac but it takes some familiarization and looking for the "tricks" that will accomplish tasks. Mac file structure is so much easier for me. In the "finder" you can locate files by list or by icon quickly and switch back and forth easily. I did get Apple Care because my dh's daughter is a long time Mac user and she said it's wort every penny. I've used it for phone calls to clear up my questions and find out the best way to do things in OS. It will cover my computer if something goes wrong but I haven't had any technical issues. Here's a book I read that helped me understand some of the platform and software differences, http://www.amazon.com/Switching-Mac-Missing-David-Pogue/dp/0596004524/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-1762450-8258428?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194232921&sr=1-1
You are going to love your Mac when you get the hang of it.

Hey Scrapbookers -- I use PSE 4 on a PC. I always hear the Macs are the best for graphics. I would like to switch to one ... but what makes them so much better than PCs? Also, what is the best program to use? Thanks -- A  Mac Wanna Be

PSE for Mac only goes up to 4.0, so you wouldn't even have to switch software versions. You would, of course, have to pay for a new program, Mac version, even if it's the "same."

One way to get around the thumb on the folder issue is to make a copy of all your Contact Sheet images and put them in a folder. That way you open up THAT folder only, browse ALL your stuff, and you can add all your keywords to your contact sheet image instead of keywording all your individual files. Saves time, whether PC or Mac.

Switching platforms is a big decision that takes research. I personally decided to stay PC because my IT guy (aka husband) is a whiz on PCs, and I didn't want to switch all my software. I also have to keep up with PSE, and Mac isn't making it anymore. Since I teach home users, almost all of them are PC users, and having all my classes in Windows is really important. However, there is an OS Mac emulator for the PC, you can try that out and see how you like the system. As for "better for graphics" I'm not sure how true that is anymore, it used to be: would take research.

I think the Mac is known as 'better for graphics' because it had Photoshop and for years was a far more suitable platform because of the graphics-handling hardware. :)

Well, Macs still have Photoshop, but Windows has had Photoshop for years, too, and the state of Windows graphics caught up with Macs, too. If this were a discussion about video editing, the Mac has an edge there. But not a huge one. But unless you're producing videos, I don't think you're going to care. :)

All this to say that labels stick.

Thanks for all of your thoughts. If Mac is not going to make Photoshop anymore, what can new Mac users use to make pages? (if they do not have Elements 4.0)

Thanks -- Jenny:)

Hi Jenny - I believe Photoshop will still be available for Macs, it's the Photoshop Elements that hasn't been updated since version 4. HTH -c-

Here's a link saying that PSE will be updated for Mac in early '08. Let's hope it's soon!!! http://www.macworld.com/article/60179/2007/09/elements.html

Carla is right, you can already buy Photoshop CS3 for your Mac. I believe the entire CS3 suite is available for Macs, in fact.

Mac PSE 4.0 is still for sale

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelmac/

but no free trial I can find. If you buy the downloadable version you can start right away, but you'll have to wait for a boxed version
