Just wondering how many Mac users are regulars on DSP? I found a couple of questions from new Mac folks this morning, but I usually just hang around the granny thread.

Any chance there would be enough Mac questions for a sub-forum?

I would love that. I'm a die-hard Mac-head but am always coming up with different questions.

Hi Omi!
I'm a long time Mac user since 1995. I'm sure I will need answers sometimes too. My seven year old Mac just went Poof! I was using Jaguar. Anyway could not see putting anymore money into old technology.

Just got a new Mac with Tiger, it's quite similar, but new things too.
20" monitor, love that!! I have been using Photoshop 7, just ordered PS CS3. I'm hoping I will still recognize it.

Best thing I ever learned was Safe often, and Backup your files. I do, thank goodness.

due to my wonderful bf- I am a mac user. He gave me a mini mac last year, and now it is the only thing I use at home. I'm still getting use to the MAC since I've used Windows for YEARS. I use GIMP, because I am cheap! ;)

I'm a total MAC user! I actually teach students in grades K-4 in my district all about technology using only Mac's. I'm in my 10th year of doing this.

I'm not sure this is the correct thread for this but I want to share a possible tool for Mac users. I moved from PC to Mac about 8 months ago and for a number of reasons I had a very difficult time organizing my digital kits and such....until I found the software NoteTaker. I think I purchased it for about $70.00. NoteTaker is a program that is used by students and others who need to keep track of a lot of information of varying types, e.g., text, photos, hot links, video, Photoshop files, etc. I can link every folder onto pages, show a preview of the file in a small size and I can archive the backup files that NoteTaker creates over to an external hard drive. When I want to find my supplies I just go to the designer section and since I organize by kit name it just shows me the whole list and a preview.

If you have used the Windows based One Note it works similarly. NoteTaker is a software by AquaMinds and they have a website that explains much more.

Note: I only mention this because the product being touted ACD cannot be used on Mac OS X platform.

I pretty much just use a nested photo system for organizing, with a folder for each store and then subfolders by designer (or event in the case of multiple designers). I use Bridge (comes with PSE) for browsing the folders. This works for me, because in general, I only use 1 kit per lo. In the rare case I want something not in the kit, say a blue ribbon, it is pretty easy to search for with Bridge, since most designers include the type of element as part of the name. Not ideal, but it does work for me.

I DO use an application similar to NoteTaker in my genealogy work...and even for scrapbooking organization, and a whole lot of other things. But the one I use is Journler. It is pretty full-featured and is donationware, meaning if you use it, the author requests a minimum $10 donation, but states that if you can't afford to donate right now, don't worry about it.
You can learn more about Journler here.

I haven't found anything I like for organizing so will definitely look at these apps.

My kits are also in nested folders -- tried early on to separate elements -- what a mess. Sure wish Apple would fix the problem with iPhoto and pngs -- iPhoto with albums for each category would be a perfect way to glance at a group of elements!! But it's just too much of a hassle with word art when the transparent BGs are turned black.

My kits are in nested folder too, when you have collected quite a few that becomes difficult to find what you are looking for. So i am trying something, it does take time, but could also be a quick reference.

I am grouping about 4 folders with in a folder, (called folder 1, folder 2, etc) , then making a contact sheet to go in each folder. Most designers give you one preview of what is in their kit.

I use that to make a contact sheet in photoshop which goes in the main folder folder. I hope that makes sense, anyway thought I would give it a try. Sort of a quick reference as to what is in each folder instead of going through each one.

The other feature that come in Tiger that I really like is Font Book. You can manage your Fonts, and turn them on or off as needed. We all like to collect Fonts, but don't need them all the time.

too!! Not only am I a digi newbie, but a MAC newbie as well. It was a pretty much a present from DH (about two months ago) since he's pretty sure I'm gonna be completely addicted and hogging the computer when I get started.

We are still having some problems getting the MAC to find the scanner/printer, which is starting to drive him totally crazy... that is one of the reason's I haven't dived right in, as well as being overwhelmed since October with a trip to WDW, Thanksgiving and now Christmas.

My hope is the get really involved right after the holidays.

I've been a Mac user since I started using a computer in elementary school. I tried a PC for 2 years and gave up and bought a Mac. I'm waiting for the $$ to magically appear so I can upgrade my 6 year old powerbook :-) I have my kits in folders according to subject (flowers, boy, Christmas, baby, etc). Not the best organization scheme, but it gives me an IDEA of where to look for stuff!

I don't know what type of Printer you have, but with my Epson Printer to find my scanner I need what is called a Twain Driver. Then mine would show for scanning in Photoshop.

If you are not using photoshop then I am not sure where it would show up. You might look at the website for your printer and you may find some help there.

I would highly recommend a book called, "The Missing Manual", mine is the Tiger Edition. It is by David Pogue, O'reilly, for what ever operating system that you have. It is a very helpful book.

I am sure you will come to love your Mac.
Merry Christmas!

I had printer problems on with my HP printer/scanner and the MacBook but I went to the HP site and updated the drivers (an easy dl) and it's all good now. I ditto what ddor said about the Pogue's Missing Manual. I used it for the first week and found it helpful in learning what is different in the Mac as compared to my old PC. I'm over the learning hump now and I love my Mac!

Also, don't forget to check the discussions on the Apple support site. A lot of knowledgeably Mac users there with enough answers to figure out pretty much any problem.

Just got an iMac a few days ago. Add me to the stats.

Supposedly PSE's new Mac version comes out early 2008. So I am holding off buying PSE Mac until then. I'm searching around for Mac/scrapbooking info at the moment.
