View Full Version : Organizing fonts: which NOT to remove?

Thanks to The Font Thing tutorial I've decided I'll try it out. After taking a look in the windows/fonts-directory I realized I have almost 700 fonts there - way to much. Now I'd like to move them into a scrapbooking fonts directory, and I'm positive I read somewhere yesterday which fonts you should absolutely not remove from the windows/fonts directory. Only now I can't find the place I read the list. Does anyone know where to find such a list?
I am so ready to get started organizing the fonts, but I don't dare to move any other fonts than those I specifically remember installing myself.
Another question: is it best to copy the fonts I'm moving into the new folder, and then uninstall them properly from the windows/fonts directory (and reinstall them from their new location), or can I simply just cut-n-paste?
Hope I was making myself clear and that someone could give me a hint...
Thanks! :)

Thanks for that list, Kristen! Anyone know the answer to LadyAdina's second question? I'd like to know that one too!
TIA!

Here's what I just read this morning dealing with fonts. It talks about how to move them, it's 3 pages long but interesting!! The do's and don't!

Thanks a lot to both Kristen and Haley64! I've now moved as many of the font files as I dared - let's just hope I haven't screwed anything up! This far The Font Thing has worked fine and I think it will make my font-collecting easier, safer and faster. Great! :D

This is great information. I always wondered what fonts I started out with on my computer. I have over 1000 now installed

Read the follow link http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/aboutgraphics/a/fontoverload.htm
where they are instructions for triming fonts plus it has a link to a program (freeware) Font Frenzy that can help a lot with font managing. It can moves the fonts without moving any font that windows need.
check it out......................... :)
