Hi, could anyone point me in the right direction to find a tutorial on how to make ribbon, the part that I want to know is how to get the ribbon to look like it has a solid thread on each side of it.
Thank you. Pam.

Pam,
I can't remember one in particular for making ribbons but here is one of the most organized sites of links for PSP.
http://www.psplinks.com/index.html
You might have to do some searching through it but search tutorials is always fun anyhow, you never know what you'll run across or which great site you will visit!!

Thank you Tracey, but I have already checked out there, it's one of my most favourite sites to start looking for anything I want for PSP.

Here you go! I personally don't use this method myself, but it's a similar effect. Have fun!
And you don't have to download the plug in, just use the Burn Tool to darken and the Dodge Tool to lighten

Thank you, will give this a try :) .
I have been trying to create a ribbon using the tutorial below in PSP 9 but with no luck... Its not explaintory enough. Plus I keep having the program crash.
Is there a step by step easier way to do this?
Thanks!
Nancy

Here's how I do it
1. Use the Selection Tool to create a rectangle, fill on a new layer in any color
2. use the Fill tool, set to Gradient in the Materials dialog box. Use a black to white gradient, and set the repeat higher to get the little black and white ridges. The Repeat size depends on how large your rectangle is and personal preference. Fill the rectangle selection on another new layer with the gradient. Undo and redo to adjust to your taste.
3. Lower the opacity of the gradient layer
4. Selection>Select None and draw a new rectangular selection around the center of the ribbon, leaving out the edges as shown in the other tutorial.
5. Use Hue/Sat to lighten the center of the ribbon
6. Use SElection>Invert (or Selection>Modify>Invert) so only the edges are selected. Use the Magic Wand set to Subtract to click the background to deselect it, so only the tiny strip of the ribbon edge is selected. If needed, Merge the gradient and rectangle layers.
7. Run Effects>3D>Bevel to give the edge some definition
8. deselect
9. Add a drop shadow to the ribbon
If I left something out, let me know, I'm writing this from memory. Also, on the fortunecity tutorial, let us know which step isn't working and we can help you trhough that as well.
for some added realistic details. use the Warp Brush to slightly, slightly distort the merged layer of the ribbon, before you add the drop shadow. Use the Burn tool to darken for some shading/low spots and the Dodge tool to lighten for highlights/high spots. Anywhere you distorted the ribbon to make it slightly narrower should be darkened, and the widest spots should be the lightest spots (since they're higher up, hence wider/closer to the viewer, they're going to catch more light).
Be sure to get a real length of ribbon for reference, and use any photos/digital ribbons you like and use those for reference as well. Looking at something makes the process far easier. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for taking the time to write that down for me Emma!

something I prefer to dodge/burn actually is to select the ribbon (Magic Wand set to All Opaque, click on the ribbon to get the marching ants exactly around it).
Then on a new layer, use a soft-edge black brush, and soft-edged white brush for the shading and highlights. Lower the brush opacity as desired, then lower the entire layer opacity as desired. Takes practice, but only in doing can we learn it.
Let me know if you like that method better!

Hi, in viewing prior threads, I noticed your remarks regarding the burn tool, etc. I really appreciate your remarks. I have made my own ribbons and in fact did it in Lori's class first. Because of my arthritis, using those two tools wreck havoc on my wrist/hands. For me, this method is perfect. Then it occurred to me that I had used another method similar to this but with a gradient to make a shiny ribbon and had no idea that a similar technique would work for this also. So thanks for the new info. Now I can finish and post my ribbons because I didn't want anyone to see them earlier. Digscrapping is learning new methods and I loving it.
