Feeling a bit frustrated at this point. I'm trying to do the Apply Image tutorial.

I opened up 2 photographs and I tried to go under Image>Image Size to resize them so that they were identical sizes. I went to the first and tried to resize it to 4x6 but it would only let me resize to something like 3.997 x 6.2333 or something near 4x6 but not exactly 4x6. So I went to the 2nd one to try to manually enter the exact dimensions of the 1st one, but again, it wouldn't let me and defaulted to something near it but not exactly it. I wasn't able to use those 2 pics as I couldn't get them sized the same.

Then I tried 2 other pics and tried to use the rectangular marquee tool to crop them to the same size, but again, I apparently wasn't able to get them to exactly the same size because both photos didn't appear under Source when I went to Image>Apply Image.

How do I resize my pics so that they are exactly the same size? Does it have something to do with Scale Size & Constrain Proportion & Resample Image under Image>Image Size?

you likely need to only type in one size, and let the other dimension figure itself out. Choose the one that makes the auto size LARGER than you need, with one dimension correct.
Then use the Canvas resize or the Crop Tool with th size set in to get what you want (you'll have to remove the excess.)

hth, let me know

Hi Emma,

I'm sorry - I'm unclear about what you said - Where do I find Auto Size and how to I make it larger than what I need?

I tried this tut again, using Image>Image Size on my 1st photo (inserting 4 for height and letting width go to 6.50 automatically - and then using the crop tool on my 2nd photo - but on my 2nd photo, after inserting the dimenions, I was met with this message: the new canvas size is smaller than the current canvas size - some clipping may occur. I clicked OK and my 2nd photo was cropped so much that it was extremely small. Both photos were taken by my camera, although on different days, but both photos should have been 4x6 to begin with - if I had them developed at a lab, they would both have been 4x6 because I've only ever gotten 4x6 prints from my camera.

I know that I'm missing something really obvious - I'm sorry!

Also, should I just use Front Image to crop all of my photos to the same size?

OK, hopefully I know what's up

There is no Auto-Size, I mean one dimension will auto-size itself.
For instance, if you need a 4x6 image, type in 4 and the other dimension may be 5.88, which is too small. Type in 6 and the other one will be 4.184, which is slightly too large: use either 4 or 6, depending on which makes the one size too big so you can crop it off.
Then use Canvas Size and clip the extra off.

OR use the Crop Tool, type in 4x6 and 200dpi, then use the same info for cropping the other one :)

that's another question I had when using the crop tool on a photo - am I supposed to insert 200 or 300 in resolution? Does it depend on whether I intend to scrap at 200 or 300?

you have to enter the resolution IF it's different from the existing image resolution. For instance, if I have a 300dpi photo and I want to make a 72dpi avatar at 125x125 pixels, I put it all in. If I just want a square image at 300 dpi, I leave the dpi blank and hold Shift while dragging the crop box, for example

Look in the Crop Tool presets drop down in the Options Bar: there's one for 4x6 300dpi. You can save a preset just by clicking the square icon in that drop down menu that looks like the New Layer icon.

I love helping you 'cause I can always give lots of info, and you go take it all in and play. Have fun, hope this works!

I'm so glad to hear that, Emma, 'cuz after awhile, I get really embarrassed to post questions as it seems once I think of one question, it multiplies immediately (kind of like bunnies)

Oh, Andy, keep those questions coming. I read every one of them and watch for the answers so that I can either try it out right away or file it for future use. You and Emma are keeping my PSE fingers running! Thanks!
