I saw a tutorial once (not sure what site it was on) where you made transparent tape to put on the corner of your photo. I can't fid it now. I've found several tutorials on the net, but none of them have the shadow effects that make it look real. Does anyone know where this tutorial is? thanks!

What programme are you using that you need the tutorial for???

I'm using PhotoShop 6, but I also have PSP 6 and PhotoShop Elements 2.
The tape in this tutorial had had shadows that showed the ridges where the tape went over the edges of the photo...

Was it for Photoshop? I'm not sure what you mean by shadow effects.
For tape, just create a strip of vellum, and use the lasso tool for the jagged edges. Then add a Drop Shadow layer style to add a style. Making the vellum see-through by using the Fill slider in the Layers Palette in PS, or the Opacity slider in PSP, or using the Styles>Visibility>Ghosted in PSE will make the shadow just around the edges.
I don't cover making tape in my classes, but I do cover making a shadow peek around the edge of something sheer like vellum or ribbon.
Let us know exactly what you'd like to create, and we'll help. Tape isn't too hard, and there are so many PS tutorials online I can't keep track of even a small portion. I just use Google and bookmark my favorites, and there are more popping up all the time.
Good luck! Let us know

I've made transparent tape before and can write a tutorial to upload to DSP, just give me a few days lol ... :)
I have one suggestion for making tape: All the tutorials I've seen online use the lasso to make a ragged edge like you tore the tape, but never a little triangular edge as it would be if cut off a dispenser with the blade.
For this, I zoom way in and use the Polygonal Lasso (Point-to-Point Freehand in PSP) and make a little pinked edge. I've also made a triangle brush and increased the spacing then just erased the edge to leave the pinked look.
It's a small detail, but I think the results are more realistic, and it doesn't take but a few minutes of extra time over the ragged edge.

By shadows, I mean that it showed shadows around the edge of the photo where the tape covered the photo. In other words, if you have a photo on top of paper, it's not going to be perfectly flat, the photo sticks up from the paper a little. So when you put tape over it, the tape lies flat on the paper until it gets to the edge of the photo and then it has to jump out from the paper to go over the photo. So when you look at it, there's a shadow or some kind of lighting effect right around the edges of the photo, wherever there is tape.

Great tutorial Dizzie!!! But I was wondering if anyone can translate the part where she adds the texture to is so it looks shiny. I saw a tutorial earlier this week to add basically this same texture to vellum for a more realistic look. But I guess I am missing something along the say. Since the item is white then you add the wave (or what ever filter) and nothing happens, I am pretty sure I had a background color of black and a foreground color of white then of course reduced the opacity.

Deselect the white rectangle before you apply the Wave filter. The texture used can be different for different versions of PSP..in version 6 it was number 45...In my version 7 I used number 58 which is called plastic3.bmp...look thru your texture images and find one that's similar...

Thanks Dizzie, I will give that a try. Well as soon as I get to leave work grrrrrrr.
Thanks again!
For Vellum and tape I also like to start with two VERY similar colors, and do the Filter>Distort>Clouds to get a nice texture
I never would have thought of using the Wave filter like that! I use it to make RicRac in my PSE 261 class
For tape I really like the Plastic Wrap filter. I make a white tape, and brush on a slightly gray streak, then Plastic Wrap it and lower opacity a lot. If the effect is too strong, in Photoshop after running the filter immediately go to Edit>Fade to calm it down
Have fun! Any other suggestions?

Ok... I give. So I don't have the Plastic Wrap filter you are talking about and I have searched high and low for one to download with no luck. Can you give an idea as to where I could look for it?? I would greatly appreciate it.
thanks Ü
I apologize: I should have been more specific as that filter is in Photoshop and Elements. For Paint Shop Pro, I just use a texture as Dizzie said.

I am using Photoshop 7 and Elements 2, I will look again tonight but I didn't have that filter. Thanks though
I don't have it open, but I THINK it's under Filters>Artistic...
anyone know for sure?
I finally remembered to check, it is under Filters>Artistic>Plastic Wrap
Now I'm doing Dizzie's Twill Tape tutorial, and PS doesn't seem to have anything comparable to the Blinds texture she uses...any ideas?

Redfields Jama 3d does a reasonable Job Emma
Here's a link for the Jama 3D filter. Just download and save it to a folder, then tell PS/E or PSP where to look for it.
http://www.redfieldplugins.com/filterJama3d.htm
In PSP, put it in the My Files>My PSP Files>Plugins, and it'll find it automatically. In PS/PSE, save it to wherever you keep your downloaded files, in a plugins folder
then go to Edit>Preferences>Plugins & Scratch Disks and browse to that folder so it can load it. Restart the program for them to show up.
I ended up doing it a totally different way, just wanting to use the native effects in PSE, and included in my 361 class. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out, though the process I used makes me laugh!
But I love Jama for lots of other things, especially corrugate edges that a pattern fill can't duplicate. Too hard to match it up after doing the Wave filter, Jama is easier, one-step
This thread has been fun, learned some new stuff too!
