View Full Version : January Challenge: Blending Photos

Nicole Young
12-31-2007, 10:21 PM
My challenge to you for January....is to blend together AT LEAST two photos and use AT LEAST one DSP product on your layout!!!

Some great ideas for this one:
- pick two photos of nature and blend them together to make them look like they are one
- blend together photos of family members that live in separate places to make them "close" together
- blend photos of the same subject in different seasons (pictures of a tree in fall, spring, winter, summer, etc)
- children in motion

Other ideas:
- use your blend modes!!! They are your friend in this challenge!!!
- use your masks and eraser brushes!!! They are also your friends!!!!

And be sure to always use COPIES of your original photos, so that you dont lose your originals

Here are some examples from my gallery and how I blended the photos:
Tree to Heaven (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=222350&ppuser=55483) I started out with two photos on this one...one was of the girls climbing a tree on a cloudy day, and the other was of a sunrays reflecting off of the water....I used blend modes, erasers and a mask to create the effects of the tree beside the water and the light shining down on the girls

And here is a layout I stole from (RoadMap4Us) my mom's gallery (thanks MOM!!!)
It is a great example of blending photos to show kids in motion....
Life Happens (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=193775)

So post a layout blending AT LEAST 2 photos
using AT LEAST one DSP Product
and link in this thread by January 30th
and you will be entered into a random drawing for a $3.99 store coupon!!!

:) Happy Scrapping!!!!

I think this fits the guidelines for the challenge I used 4 different photos. Extracted and blended together. Happy New Year (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=232396&nocache=1)

Looking forward to this. Graphic layouts are awesome. I have a question. Exactly what do you mean when you say "use your blending modes". I know my way a bit around graphic layouts but still feel I'm missing something.

I know my way a bit around graphic layouts but still feel I'm missing something.Blending modes are on each layer that you are working on, on your layer palette. They default to normal in PSP not sure whta progtam you are using. You have several choises like soft light burn etc. Some of my favorites are overlay and multiply. Thanks to Gundimom for reminding me to link my Snowy Day (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=232255)layout in this challenge. I'm pretty sure it was already 1/1/2008 somewhere when I uploaded!

See my Original Picture (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=232285&ppuser=34323)here. I copied it, ran it through about 8 VP filters, blended them all together, then blended overlays onto that result. You could say I was in a blending frenzy!!!

I cheated a bit because the two photos I used had practically the same background, and I havent really followed the criteria of nature photos or people in different places. The exercise was very good for me though, forcing me out of my safe little comfort zone, making me face my fears:). Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the challenge Nicole, hope to do more work for this challenge during the month!

Thanks so much for the challenge. I love graphic layouts and rarely think to do one so this was just the inspiration I needed. The layout used more blending than is immediately apparent from the layout since I had to blend four copies of the background photo to achieve the green waves and gold sand. After blending the background, I blended an old photo of myself into the layout. Then the fun began as I added the shells, seaglass, starfish, and crown.

Here's my go. I used one photo, duplicated it and then blended the two together to get this effect. My Dreams (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=236147). The photo was taken when I was about 13 and I remember my mum taking it of me when I was all dreamy eyed about some pop star or another at the time.

Well, as Pinky7 would say, I was 'winging it' here. Never done any blending before and not sure is this is correct, but I am pleased with the result anyway.

Thanks for the link to VP, I just installed it and it is amazing! What a great tool to get those effects that I thought only really good photographers or those really good at PS could get. I'm just amazed!

Ask away.:D :D VP is Virtual photographer a filter you can add to your software program to change the appearance of your photos. Best thing about it is that it is free. Here is the link. (http://www.optikvervelabs.com/)

I have blended three photos in this layout - the background showing our current home and two photos of sandhill cranes. The cranes are mates and have lived here for a while. I had to flip the photo of one of the cranes horizontally so their beaks wouldn't be crossed. :-)

Well, I thought I'd already posted a link to my latest attempt at a blended graphic layout, but I can't seem to find it here. Forgive me if I've linked this twice, but here is the layout I've called Fly (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=237181&ppuser=61677)

Here is another layout that I did quite some time ago using blending, but I loved the way it came out, so I thought I'd add a link to it as well. This one is titled
Believe (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=219501&ppuser=61677)

I loved working on this challenge--thanks!

Had to redo this because DD wanted 2 photos on the page. Which do you like better?

Here's one last one from me: PISA (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=237531&nocache=1). The photo at the far left is a blend of 4 separate photos, here's and enlarged version of it the Baaaad Tourists. (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=237530) This is from the album I'm making for my Mom, my sister and me of pics from our Mediterranean cruise last November. Even though the upper parts of our bodies are only extractions, I did have to blend the bottom parts into the grass.

The alpha I used is from a club kit, I'm not exactly sure how to credit it because I don't find it in the store.
