View Full Version : Patterned Paper Challenge

I admit I struggle to use some of the beautiful patterned papers that the designers create so I thought it might make a fun challenge.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make a layout using four different patterned papers. But to make it even more interesting, each patterned paper must be made by a different DSP designer (so you can't just reach for an Add on pack)! You can add anything else to your layout you like - but it must include four PATTERNED (ie striped, floral, geometric, spots, circles, words etc) papers by different DSP designers.

Post your layout in the Next Step gallery with a link in this thread by 31 January and receive a beautiful backpack by Valeri Brumfield (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=223730). More patterned paper to play with!

I have already done a couple of layouts as examples:
Future All Black (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=232443)
2008 (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=232444)

I hope you have fun with this and I can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Your a bit tricky aren't you - different designers! - always a catch.
The backpack is a beautiful incentive though.

Can't make it too easy - where would the fun be in that!

And don't forget, you could combine this with the other Next Step challenges. Love that ad inspiration (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28695)that Meg posted!

Ok, I've been working on a layout off and on for HOURS, Sharon! This is so hard for me!

In your opinion, is texture or grunge a pattern? Like a plain colored canvas paper that has grunge markings around the edges?

Count me in. I just saw the post for the patterned paper challenge, and do want to try this.

LOL! Personally, I think a pattern is a bit more than texture or grunge. But remember, it doesn't have to be a BOLD pattern. For example, the light green paper I used under my journalling on my year in review album (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=231953&ppuser=1660) was patterned but it was quite subtle. Patterns that are tone on tone might be easier to use :)

Some suggestions that may (or may not) help you:

- pick a paper that you LOVE and then try to find others to use with it. Don't think "matching" rather think about colours and patterns that go with the feel of the paper.
- try building a framework with the patterned papers first, then add the photos (this is what I did with my All Black layout (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=232443&ppuser=1660). I had in mind the general photos I was going to use for this but didn't select any until the basic structure of the layout was made.
- you don't have to use a lot - a little can go a long way (but don't just cut out the plain bits of the paper LOL). Sometimes it helps if you start with a very plain background
- cut the papers into shapes and make embellishments with them (eg flowers) or layer them on to tags or on a border
- think proportion - just like when you are choosing colours, you might want to have much more of one pattern with others used as accents
- this book by Ali Edwards (http://www.creatingkeepsakes.com/shop/item.ihtml?idx=420) has heaps of ideas and you might be able to browse it at a local library or scrapbook shop

I love this photo that my daughter took of her brother last summer. I used the colors and shapes in the shelves behind him as my inspiration for colors and patterns. I have no idea if I succeeded or if this is a horrific mess. LOL! Be gentle!

I actually used 5 patterned papers on this one. I love using different patterns together in a LO. Some of them are not too visible, like the small border of the striped paper on the left side of the LO. What do you think?

Here's mine. This was a lot of fun, altho I had quite the selection of papers in my editor before I finally settled on the ones I included. I see that you suggested using Ali Edwards' "A Designer's Eye" book--I'm lucky enough to have that book and found it to be very helpful in terms of just getting some ideas for the types of papers that might go with my pics. FYI, I thought this layout might also do double duty for a Sunday Scrappers challenge until I discovered that the challenge I was looking at was for LAST January. Anyway, no harm done--it gave me an opportunity to scrap some pictures I might not have used otherwise.

still not sure of the different terms in digital scrapbooking...is a background the same as a paper...can either be used in this challenge? Looking at the DSP store, I noticed a section of backgrounds, while in kits the info often says paper, but they seem the same...are they?

Bocca
01-07-2008, 12:26 PM
Leea, a background is the same as a paper. Of course, we use the term loosely since in digital it's not a "real" paper. :D

Thanks Penny :) Digital paper works much better for me...doesn't wrinkle, tear, or get footprints...unless it's supposed to ;) :)

spotty
01-14-2008, 01:35 AM
Hi Essee,:)
Linking is straightforward. The way I will show you is invisible when working properly so will break it up so computer does not realise...
Go to your uploaded gallery LO and copy the address which appears in the bar at the very top.

Now return to this thread and type the bit I am putting below:

(square opening bracket)url=

follow that immediately by pasting that address and close with the square closing bracket
no spaces anywhere in all that.
Now type anything e.g. the name of your LO, and follow with the signing off code shown below:

/url (with square brackets either side of that), again no spaces anywhere except in your title. That is:
openingsquarebracket forwardslash url closingsquarebracket
If I use an actual sq bracket in this post the computer tries to find code...

If it works you will see your LO title underlined and none of the code visible.

Let's see how it goes! LOL

Eeeek, I almost bit off more than I could handle with this challenge, . I'm back from a year long hiatus from scrapping (was figuring out how to use my camera, no seriously, I was! :) ). I have been browsing the forums looking for ideas, inspirations and most of all motivation! I found this challenge and thought "ok, here's a great starting point, get going and create a page!". Lo and behold I have, now mind you, any cc's are more than welcome as I've been looking at this page for 2 days now and I'm no longer "seeing" it, :).

I'm off to look at some of the other participants pages...

How FUN! I did 2 layouts for this challenge. I intentionally used 4 of the same papers on both layouts, trying to see how different I could make the pages look. Then I added one additional paper to one of the pages and two additional papers to the other.

I searched out papers that complemented each other in color. (As if I was in the fabric store choosing upholstery fabrics for decorating). On the white space page I used my favorite technique for using multiple patterns.....I created a new paper from strips of the papers and stitched them together.
