View Full Version : What *IS* a Go-Go?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Go-go is a subgenre of funk which originated in the Washington, D.C. area during the mid- to late-1970s. A handful of bands contributed to the early evolution of the genre, but singer/guitarist Chuck Brown is credited with having developed most of the hallmarks of the style.[1]
In technical terms, "[g]o-go's essential beat is characterized by a syncopated, dotted rhythm that consists of a series of quarter and eighth notes (quarter, eighth, quarter, (space/held briefly), quarter, eighth, quarter)… which is underscored most dramatically by the bass drum and snare drum, and the hi-hat… [and] is ornamented by the other percussion instruments, especially by the conga drums, timbale, and hand-held cowbells."[2] A swing rhythm is often implied (if not explicitly stated).
Another important attribute in go-go is call-and-response with the crowd in concert.
Well, THAT explains a lot, doesn't it.................?
Okay... Here it is, really. I'm trying to make it as simple as I can, but apparently my head doesn't DO simple. Gah.
We're going to do something different each of the four weeks of the month (or five, if we have extra time!)! Each week will be a BoGo; you'll purchase the featured item and receive a free item after posting a layout using the feature. My oh-so-selfish goal is to end the year 2008 with at least 12 2-page spreads that form a cohesive yearly album. Cohesive... Wellllll, cohesive in the design style, that is.
So. During the first week of the month, we'll feature a page kit, with a bonus of a 2-page Quick Click (and this is how we'll get a cohesive feel!).
During the second week, we will work on journaling on our pages (aack! yes, you have to journal!! how else do we remember that Sam used to say "lasterday" instead of yesterday...?). So, the feature will be a font. The bonus will be a journaling helper embellishment set or something along those lines.
In the third week of the month, we'll work on supporting pages for the month. The feature will be a page kit, and the bonus will be an add-on, embellishment set, or paper pack.
In the fourth (and fifth - if there is one) weeks, we'll get caught up and finished up with our pages. And add more if you'd like. The featured item will be potluck, meaning whatever tickles our fancy! You'll get to vote. And the bonus will be something coordinating with said fancy-tickler. That's the call and response part of our little funk-jam here.
HERE'S A BIG TIDBIT! Those who post layouts using each of the features will be entered into a drawing for a free handwriting font! If you play along all month, you could REALLY be rewarded with your very own handwriting font! Of course the REAL reward will be a fabulous, completed 2008 album in December!
Sooooo........ Hope you're as excited as I am! We'll start JANUARY 7 this month!!

I have a question: Do you have to do all 5 layouts to be entered for the handwritting? or if you enter only 3 then you can be entered? Just trying to figure out my time on this... This sounds like fun and I am all about completing an album. My husband would be thrilled!

Yes, I do believe that is incentive enough!!! Oh, man, I hope I find the time for this!

Hey, Maria, you'll need to use each of the weekly featured products in order to be eligible for the font service. The cool thing is that each week has a bonus (if you complete the challenge by Sunday at midnight est of that week), so you'll get two-for-one AND a chance for a font. :) HTH! And I do hope you participate; I love love love your work!!

You know, I'm kind of waiting to see how it goes on the chat... If there's enough demand, I will certainly ponder it ... :)

Suzanne, I don't think I have done one of your challenges before, and the format seems a little different, so when/how do we find out what kits are featured? Can we find out everything for the month up front (trying to make the best use of my coupons!)?
This should be fun!

Oh, yeay!
Kathleen, we'll start each new "feature" on Mondays. I'll try (ack!) to get everything done for the month, but I'm already behind..... lol! :) That was my goal, though........ So... Featured items will be posted Mondays (along with the bonuses). That's the plan for now...... :) :)

Bookmarking? I didn't know I could do that! So, for each challenge I do I can bookmark the link so I don't have to waste valuable scrapbooking time trying to find the link again?
Please, how do I do it?
I'd like to give this a try....it is a bit intimidating to me though. Feels like a HUMONGOUS task!

Hi emandlivsmom (Jenn]
to bookmark a challenge, jus go to the top of your computer screen and right under your word "google" you will see a gold star, and a gold star with a small green symbol on it, click on that, and click "add to favorites" and the link will show up in "your favorites" .

Ooooh, I just love you already!!! Yes, you can bookmark all the links in your browser... I have a little section for DSP links... In firefox, I go up to Bookmarks, then hit "Bookmark this page", then later I grab the bookmark in the list of bookmarks and move it up to my dsp section (how many times can I say "bookmark in one sentence?). :) :)
And yes, it does feel humongous to think about the whole year... BUT, if we take it one month, one WEEK at a time... I'm soooooooo psyched about the project!!

Oh, and doggone - I just saw Victoria already showed you.... probably better than I could! I think there's a way to "bookmark" stuff on the site, too... I think it's "favorites?" or something like that - I'm sure there's a tutorial someplace....... don't ask me (site-challenged - i can barely get a thingy into my signature line - i swear i have to have help every time!)........

I'd really love to do this. I hope I am not too late to start. I really don't understand the way the dates are done in the US...I think it means this started on the 7th, so does that mean the first week needs to be posted by the 13th?
Thanks
I am a newbie as well....how many LO's do you have to do to outgrow that status...?? lol

Hi karina. The DSP site uses EST for everyone. I think midnight of the 13th is the same as noon in Perth. There is a time zone converter under The Place tab at top of forum. Duedates for challenges and other details are almost always listed in the first post of a new challenge. welcome. :)
