This week I'm challenging you to photograph Food.
To get some ideas of how or what to take pictures of, have a look through some cookbooks or magazines.
Also, try googling food photography for some ideas.
Please post up to 3 photos(they may be framed) in the Photography Gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=615).
I'm really looking forward to seeing your mouthwatering pictures!

Thanks for joining, Bobby! The rules are pretty simple: Anyone may join. You may upload up to 3 "food" photos between Jan 5-13. They may have a frame around them, but no other embellishments or anything. And they should be posted in the Photography Gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=615) or they might be missed when we put them up for voting to see which is the favourite. So yours is fine. :)

I'd love some help on how to get these looking really professional. My first entry (not my first attempt though!) is here:

I have a number of other gourmet meals I often make that I think would photograph well. I don't usually prepare them just for myself, but this is a nice excuse to make an exception! But want to do a little planning to try and improve the next attempt. The main issue I'm having is the lighting, I'm trying to do shots in my dining room to use the white tablecloth but am having problems with shadows as you can see. I could use available light during the day...but anything really good I'd want to cook for dinner only (particularly meals like these that take most of the day to prepare right!) So haven't figured out yet how I can take a shot when it's pitch dark out or without getting shadows from the chandelier and/or flash. Any ideas? I do wish I had plain white plates as well, but hey, there's only so far I will go in terms of getting a good photo!

I'm not sure if this counts. The main subject is a drink. I rarely drink any alcoholic beverage......except this on occasion...LOL!!

Mary Jo, lighting is one of the toughest things to master with food photography, especially when you can't use natural light. I think it's as difficult as portrait photography. Do you have a flash diffuser, and are you able to bounce your flash off a white ceiling or a white wall? You could try experimenting with small desk/table lamps(unless you have studio lighting already) to light the food and probably use a tripod. Definitely something I'd like to experiment with.
I thought this link was helpful:

Thanks for the ideas Audrey...yes, I use a flash diffuser and bounce it off the walls, but it's not enough to get rid of the shadows...and if I turn the overhead light off, and just use flash, even diffused it throws its own shadows. I don't own a desk lamp, but I think if I want better results I need to get one and build a little light box as well. My goal for this year was to really try new stuff with my photography (not just what I am already good at!) so this is a good place to try and start!
