well i'll start by telling you the first one i wish i'd have asked! when i started in ps, dh was a graphic designer and just sang the praises of ps. well i tried one day, and tried, and tried, and tried... and i'm quite the computer geek! but i could not move a layer!! no matter how hard i tried to select the right thing and drag it around, it just would not move. so after an entire day (i'm talking many, many hours here) he came home and i, in tears, asked how to move a layer. he opened the layers palette (i'd closed it), CLICKED on that layer, then moved it. ARGHHH! all freaking day. i was too stubborn to call and ask! from then on i'd call him 5-10 times a day with a ps question!! :D

I'm not sure of my dumbest question, Jennifer would be a better judge of that as I asked her all my idiot ones when I started this. I was yelling at my monitor, "WHERE'S the DROP SHADOW??!!!!"

NEVER asked? Hmmm....maybe, "This site has FORUMS?!" How long did I use the site before I even realized there were sections other than the gallery and freebies?!

Come on, let's hear 'em! I've had several private messages with questions saying she doesn't want to clog the boards, but we LOVE posts! Plus, when I give a really long answer, I like to know it'll be read by lots of people it might help.
Let's make this place huge for all your digi scrapping needs! Keep 'em coming, no clogging, no laughing, we've ALL been there :)

I have a touchy question, possibly dumb! lol I wondered about posting layouts that use stuff from places other than DSP. GASP, I know! Most of what I have is from here, I've only ever bought from here, but I have some freebies from other places and wonder if its ok to post those layouts. I have one I need some suggestions on and one I'm just really proud of! I won't put a link to where I got it in the description, just who the kit designer is. is that ok? I love this place best!! :D

valeri

Of course you can!! Just no commercial site names, but most definately give the designer credit!

See not a dumb question!!! :D  ;)

Emma

and definitely not touchy either, and quite common in fact.

Give the kit name and the designer name, no links, obviously, but also no site names or acronyms.

We have pages with products from all over. Wouldn't be much of a gallery if it only permitted DSP and self-made layouts!!!

Have fun, be sure to post in the Help>Step-it-up gallery and the Help forum so we can be sure to see it and offer advice.

Well, I have no idea how long it took me to discover that the little words in the bar up above, NEW POSTS, meant just that... all the new posts that have been posted! Every day I would come into the forums and scroll every single thread and check the date on the right to see if anyone had posted anything new! :p If only I had asked what that meant in the first place, or even thought to click on and see what it did! :D Now it is so easy to come in and click those two little words and wha la! instant new postings!!! :D :D

I finally figured out that I had preset brushes in PSP8. How do I make new presets? Can I download preset brushes - especially looking for torn paper - and does anyone have a site they trust? I got tons of spyware and a Trojan from either Lush Brush or AWB.

And how do I add a preset shape? I'd love to add a heart shape.

Emma

LOL! That's not a dumb question, Stace. Might want to post in the PSP forum so we can get more views and replies on it though :D All you asked is possible and not hard

I have one I asked to Liz awhile back, I knew she used PSE and I wanted to make a blinkie in there. I couldn't get the animate options to be enabled, and just kept asking and asking where and how she got those enabled to make the blinkie. She kep telling me and telling me to check this little box, which I couldn't check 'cause it was grayed out. Finally it, "duh!" dawned on me that the little box wouldn't show up unless I had GIF file chosen. She got a good laugh at my expense!!!

Emma's comment about the drop shadows in PSE made me remember how frustrated I got once I found them - and could not find the way to change their size so that they didn't look too big and heavy. Of course, if I had asked ......

And finding out there were hidden menus (why Adobe, why???) - otherwise known as fly out menus. Are they trying to make it hard? And I consider myself reasonably competant at using a computer - it is my job after all.

If only I had taken a leaf out of Andy's book and asked - sigh.

If only I had taken a leaf out of Andy's book and asked - sigh.

I wish I could say that I had a "dumb" question that I never asked, but *sigh* I pretty much ask anything and everything that pops up in my head and I will usually preface it with "this probably sounds stupid...". In fact, I just posted such a question in the PS forum.

Reading this post made my stupid question pop into my head... how do you know if you have spyware, and how do you get rid of it? And what the heck is a Trojan....? Man, I know Photoshop like the back of my hand, but start talking other "techy" things and I get lost... oh so lost!

A trojan horse is "A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer."

Sometimes spyware is obvious - generally speaking, spyware refers to any computer program that gathers information about a person without his or her knowledge. Spyware programs can track your Internet page views, allow someone else to read your email, and even record your keyboard strokes. There are programs you can get to guard against this (Norton antivirus and McAfee have programs that include spyware protection).

BonnyJean, when listing designers of the elements, research them to find the name of the designer and element or kit name, not "by a xyz designer" -- at the bottom of each DSP page, you can find "terms of use (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/company/legal.shtml#terms) " which include the guidelines.

Stacey, a WMF file is a good place to begin for preset shapes. Create a vector drawing or open a WMF (or other vector) file -- you will find "shape" as an option under export. Then, when you use it, you can "retain style" to keep any colorings your graphic might have included, or uncheck that option to just draw the shape. Go to PSP's help file and use preset shape as keywords and you will find instructions on creating preset shapes.

One of the dumbest questions I sometimes forget to ask is "why not?"

BonnyJean

Pam, thank you! I was looking everywhere for something like that and didn't see that until you pointed it out. Even after you said it was at the bottom of the page, it took me a bit to find it! lol thanks!!

The dumbest thing i ever did was when i first started scrappin and i was trying to copy a lauren bavin layout - did not know how to make vellum in microsoft picture it!!!!! so clever me got a vellum envelope and cut a rectangle shape out - i thought i was nothing short of freaking awsome - but the thing is the next day i invited sallyscrapper and wilmascrapper over to my house and proceeded to show them with great relish how to make vellum - LOL. Anyone who has used picture it will know vellum is one of the easiest things to do!!!!

Ann Maree, I did have to giggle at that! lol I use Picture It too and I love making vellum! lol it did take me a very long time to figure out how to crop a circle shape with Picture It! lol I'm glad you figured it out!

I have a silly question! I've noticed in a lot of the challenges people have words such as click HERE attached to their links. Okay, HOW do you do that?

Marcee
06-15-2005, 09:28 PM
not a dumb question..took me awhile to figure it out also..I am a total internet idiot.....

When you post in the message box see the earth picture at the top Under the word Color Just click on that then type what you want your link to say..like Click here..or My Gallery..then click ok..then another box will pop up that is where you type the web addy...then click ok..then on your message box it will show what you just typed in html..but one you submit reply you will only see Click here.. ;)

Here's a dumb question...

When you click on someone's user name, an option to add that user to your "buddy list" comes up. What does the buddy list do?

06-27-2005, 04:45 PM
Thanks so much for the prompt replys on how to add links, and, Emma, thanks for doing a tutorial! I must not have been the only one with that dumb question! :p

Margie
06-28-2005, 09:15 AM
a buddy list is used to private message a group all at once. so if some of you are working on a swap or circle journal or something, you could pm the info to the buddy group and not have to put everyone separately. hth. :)

okay, here's a new one! How do I find out if my printer has the full-bleed option? Are there wide-format printers that do a full-bleed 12x12?

LokiZ
11-06-2005, 12:41 AM
Actually trojan's that are destructive are only one type of about five or six types. Many trojans do not destroy as they are programed to steal info, allow access, or watch your every move. Makes ya feel a whole lot better doesn't it.

Mine might be why the file upload sizes are so small? The members size limit would not have to be touched. Those who post bigger would just get fewer posts.

Anyone who has used picture it will know vellum is one of the easiest things to do!!!!

I still don't know how to make vellum (I use PSE3)...maybe make a white box and change the opacity????

Amanda

Emma - check your printer manual :)

Tara - Yep - just lower the opacity!

d2vasquez
11-07-2005, 04:58 PM
Emma - I have a few Epsons (including a wide format - R1800) and I have an option that says borderless and I get the full bleed you are looking for and no border around any part of my picture.

Now my question - how do you add your layouts to the end of your signature....did it once and now can't figure it out? Only get the hyperlink. Also when you post there are two icons I have no idea what they are for - the # one and the "php" one - can you explain?

I have to laugh about the vellum one - I was stumped with that too!

great thread Emma ....lol Wyogal... your comments made me laugh I have got lost on the website too and didn't use new posts for a while ...
I have one... does anyone know how to change jpg files into pdf..... Kinko's have said they prefer my files in pdf for printing for a calendar....
My hubby has said Ineed to buy an 'add on' for Adobe as they don't offer that function for free ? does anyone else offer it for free ?

Emma

to add a thumbnail of your layout to your sig line, righ click on the thumbnail of your layout in your gallery and copy and paste the URL in the Properties field in your Insert Image dialog.

I THINK you can do File>Save As in PS or PSE and choose PDF from the drop down. I think it's ridiculous that they prefer a pdf file, though. Adobe Acrobat Reader MIGHT be able to save as PDF, and Acrobat Pro definitely can! So can In Design, and I think Image Ready too...

d2vasquez
11-07-2005, 08:55 PM
Emma is right on how to convert you jpeg to a pdf - my husband works for a printing company and they prefer pdf files too - think it has to do with the fonts....but don't quote because I don't generally pay much attention when he talks about work! LOL...kidding - sort of!

For PDF I can recommend eDocPrinter or pdf995, pdf95 can be used for free, edocprinter is around $30, I use eDocprinter all the time for publishing my family history research.

How do you insert an image into a message...especially an image that's NOT posted to your gallery?

Examples of what I'm asking about are in this thread...
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13185&highlight=fix+photo

Meg
05-26-2006, 04:15 PM
If they're not in your gallery, you need to have them posted somewhere on the Web that you can pull from. Like Imageshack or Photobucket. Then you can insert them just like anything else using their http address.

Hi, here goes a dumb question? How do you make those blinkies? and how do you put them in your questions and replies? I know, maybe I need to take a class on those. Where would I go? I am veeeery newbie.

Emma
05-29-2006, 09:59 AM
there are a few tutorials for making blinkies: click on The Campus>Tutorials link above and check under your software for one. Basically you're making an animated GIF file using Photoshop elements File>Save for Web, PHotoshop Image Ready, or Paint Shop Pro Animation Studio. I don't know how DIP does it.

To insert it into your sig line, first post the image somewhere on the web. Right click on the image and choose Properties and copy the URL from that box.
Then you go to quick Links>Edit Signature and click on the Image icon (the yellow mountain). In that box that pops up paste in the URL of the image (should end with .GIF and NOT the link from the actual page where it's found).
This is the same procedure for inserting images into a reply in the forum, just one is in the Reply dialog, and one is in the Edit Signature dialog.
hth!

Here's my dumb question for the day (or more like the hour):
Where can I find the magazine Digital Scrapbooking 5?
This morning I went to Barnes and Nobel bookstore but they didn't have it. I've been to Target, Walmart, and Hobby Lobby with no luck. Anybody have any suggestions?

I ended up getting it from my LSS, but I have bought them in the past at Walmart and our local grocery store. I haven't seen this issue out however.

My guess would be speed of download for those on dial-up. I would think that DSP wants to stay computer friendly to as many as possible.

here's mine I was too embarrassed to ask: what's a "backpack?"

Something has happened to my gallery view. The previews are running down the right hand side instead of in a horizontal row across the bottom. It is very distracting and squishes the lo I want to look at. How do I change it back to the right way? I don't even know what I did for this to happen. Thanks.

Dumb question. When I try to upload my profile photo, it fails. The image I'm trying to upload is either a gif (445 x 442 pixels) or jpeg (284 x 288 pixels 100KB). I've also tried to link it to my Yahoo 360 album and it fails.

I can't find anything in the forum about uploading a profile photo, just the signature.

Lauren
07-27-2006, 02:50 PM
Your avatar needs to be quite small - under the upload box is the following info - Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 125 by 125 pixels or 100.0 KB (whichever is smaller).

artsea
07-27-2006, 04:34 PM
Thanks Lauren, but its still not showing up next to my name!

Kristen
07-27-2006, 07:20 PM
Your profile picture is different from avatar. What you want - to show up in posts - is the avatar. Go back to the User Control Panel and choose Edit Avatar and upload the image again.

Sorry this wasn't clearer.
