Meg and I are going to be running a special photography challenge. It is easy - all you have to do is take a photo of YOURSELF once a day, every day for the month of February. This is a great chance to get yourself into your albums (and a great way to learn how to use your camera a little better too). And if you have every been tempted to join in the Photo a Day challenge in the Photography forum, (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28203) this is a great opportunity to combine two challenges! Just post your self portraits to the Photo a Day gallery. (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=2124)

You do not need a fancy DSLR or expensive gear to do this! In fact, sometimes it is a lot easier with a point and shoot (especially if you have one with a flip around screen!). Here are some hints:

1. Use the self timer on your camera so you have time to get into position for the shot.

2. Use a mirror - or anything else reflective (car bumpers, windows, spoons etc)

3. The "long arm" technique (holding the camera out and clicking) can be good if you don't have much time.

4. Shadows can make an interesting self portrait

5. Experiment with different lighting around your house (desk lamps, computer monitors!)

6. If you don't have a tripod, use a table, chair, rolled up jacket to hold your camera. You could even use the "spousal tripod" (your other half), although in my experience, they tend to be a little unreliable  .

7. Try out different angles - high, low, close up, far away

8. You don't have to show your face - other parts of your body can tell a powerful story too.

9. Have fun with Photoshop! Don't like the shot out of the camera? Use your skills to make it better fit what you had in mind. Could be as simple as cropping or converting to black and white or more complex (adding an artistic filter or a clone of yourself!)

Hope you will join us!! Sign up here if you are interested :)

Oh trust me, Melissa, I've already warned Shazzt about my self portraits! SCARY!

In the past, when I've needed a new avatar or something, I've taken oh, about 40 photos before I find one I like that doesn't overly accentuate my dark circles, white hairs, double chin, etc.

Wow. I bet those of you coming to Vegas just can't WAIT to meet me now, LOL!

Seriously, I'm really looking forward to this challenge for several reasons. I've been lax about photo taking in general lately and I want to get back in the habit of carrying it around. I want to practice new angles and settings. And most of all, I want to learn to RELAX when looking at pictures of myself.

Thanks, Sharon, for getting this going!!

Honestly this scares me....winters under 14 layers of clothes, hats, mittens, etc. allow a person to kind of "let it go" for a while. :-) BUT being that an "out of my box" challenge is always a learning experience, I'm going to give it a go! I'm in! :-)

BethyNixon
01-23-2008, 06:04 PM
This is interesting . . . we are all creative, artistic people who love this visual medium. Yet each of us have said how "bad" we look! Let's agree to love ourselves and celebrate our imperfect bodies and faces and not worry about looking perfect but on capturing the art we are each day!

And the next person who signs up . . . NOTHING negative about yourself!!!!!! We all ROCK!

I'm a NKOTB ...don't know if I'm allowed to do this challenge...it does say intermediate and advanced. If you miss a day (busy, travel, etc.) is there a chance to post the next day or so...or what do you do, if anything? Although I'm not signing up yet, since I may be too much of a beginner...I'll say something positive...I have cool looking gray...no make that *silver* hair :) My DH calls it decoration :) It's silver gray underneath at the front toward my face and mixed brown and silver gray for the rest of it...I'd kind of like to catch it in a few photos as it changes and the 50/50 moves more toward 100 percent silver gray :)

Now, Since Bethy said I have to say something nice.........I will join this challenge because I have approximately 15 photos of me in the past 10 years and giving cameras to my oldest 2 daughters didn't help the matter(they only take photos of themselves and their friends.)
When we got home from Mexico, I realized that I wasn't on their vacation, LOL. Really, there were only 4 or 5 shots of me out of 400-500 photos. I, like all of you, am the family photographer. I am resolved to have people remember who I am too. I may even do a LO for ME. If it fits the challenge.
Thanks for pushing me into a new adventure. One question, can the photo be taken from any perspective?

Maikku
01-23-2008, 08:40 PM
I'm in although every day can be rough at least it is my favorite month and the shortest of them all.... better keep my point and shoot charged up too just in case. Good thing I have a tripod although I really love the mirror method too. This is a great challenge to learn to love ourselves just as we are.:D

Well I take lots of photos each and every day and Non of me and there is only about 20 of me this year other then the wedding and moneymoon !!!! I will try this too. Mine are looking really bad here lately and I need some photos of me. I hope I have a enough room on my card...

I've been doing/or trying to do photo a day for a year and a half now. And there are days when even though I take pictures I don't get them posted on the day taken, I've been even more lax the last three months. I'm hoping this will keep me motivated to actually get online in time to post. Though the worst nights seem to be the two I work. Maybe I should set an alarm, "hey, it's 11pm have you posted your photo yet?!?!"

Victoria
01-23-2008, 09:04 PM
I'm willing to give this a try. If we take the photo each, can we post them in batches, say we have a romantic weekend away to celebrate Valentine's day for example, and don't have internet available each day?

WoodsyWoman
01-23-2008, 09:11 PM
Sounds like fun. Good thing today is not day one. I'd have to get real creative with the shot so as not to scare anyone!!

01-23-2008, 09:21 PM
OOPS, I missed Bethy post about say something nice.

It's a good kind of scary. It means I've worked ALL day and will have plenty of mad money to buy whatever my digi-scrapping addiction calls for.

Leea - everyone is welcome!!
Chris - take the photo from any perspective - as long as at least a bit of you is in the shot!

Wow - looks like we will see plenty of BEAUTIFUL ladies in February!

shazzt
01-23-2008, 10:17 PM
Victoria - if you are playing in the Photo a Day Gallery, then you follow their rules. For us, as long as the photo is taken ON THE DAY, I am not going to get too worried if you have to catch up with posting. I bet we are ALL looking forward to romantic weekends away for Valentines :)

Only a photo a day, NOT a layout a day (unless you want to of course!) But it would be nice to see those photos in a layout or two after the month is over. And for all you ladies who (like me) only have boys to scrap, it will be a great way to use a girly kit or two

01-24-2008, 11:25 AM
Yay! I'm in! I can do this!
Since the photo in my avatar is probably 6 years old
it's about time I get some more good shots of myself.
I've got an idea for a picture that I'm going to have
to work on to figure out if it will work. It involves the
bunkbed in the girls' room, a nightlight, DD's fuzzy blanket
and the other DD's dresser. ???? Aren't you all just intrigued!
Who knows if it will turn out the way I imagine. That's why I
love digital though - I can try lots of different angles
and camera settings and choose not to keep the ones
that don't capture what I'm looking for.

Just bumped into this challenge...it sounds like a great idea. Like so many of you ... I've discovered that while being the family photographer I'm in less than 1% of our photos...maybe that means any photo of me will someday be quite valuable??? rare = value??? lol!!!!!!

As I'm unaccustomed to being the 'subject' this is going to be a definite challenge.

Colina
01-25-2008, 06:48 PM
OK, I'm in! LOL, I've tried the photo a day too and can never seem to make it for a month. I'm going to set my cell phone alarm to remind me and if worse comes to worse, I will use it instead of my "fancy" camera to take my picture! Now something positive about myself, mmmm, the 25 lbs I put on in the last 2 years minimize my wrinkles, lol? I look much better when I smile, there, that works!

I'm making a list of shots to take!

PS. My avatar shot is 2 years old!

lbjiowa
01-25-2008, 07:05 PM
OOPS! Forgot to add the 'positive note' ... memory ... ey ... yeeaa ... there's a definite positive note about having memory challenges like I do ... I always have "NEW" friends ... at least as far as I can remember!

Believe it or not...one of the BEST photos ever taken of me (during adult life) was actually taken by the Dept of Transportation for my driver's license!!! What a shock! (as luck would have it however ... I managed to lose that license within the first month and had to have it replaced. Yep...you guessed it...the replacement had the typical 'lovely' ... 'can't believe it's you' type photo...oh well...it was exciting while it lasted!)

OK, I have to tell you....this challenge is really going to be something! A couple of times today I caught myself starring off into space trying to think of creative self portraits so I have some ideas on the first. I actually thought of one today that made me laugh out loud....then I knew I was obsessing! :-)

Meg
01-27-2008, 01:14 AM
I took a self portrait yesterday for my ATC that I'll swap at Vegas!!

Took 11 photos, and liked one, LOL!!! It's a start, right?

I'm so excited to see so many people signed up for this. We'll have to cheer each other along so we make it all the way through the month.

I might try this, too. I'm hardly ever in photos, since I'm the one taking them. Last summer, we went on vacation with DH's family. When we got back, I realized I had 2 pictures of me (out of over 200!!!) Luckily, everyone had cameras, so I was able to get some photos from them. :)

Ohhhh this is a big leap of bravery for me... I'll make the attempt. Like you all, I am the family photographer so there are very few photos of me in existence. I seemed to have run from the front of a camera all my life. HHHmmmmmm, well, here's to holding my breath and hoping. ....

Either post your photos in the Next Step gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=4046) or to the Photo a Day gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=2124) if you want to combine the two challenges. Then just post the link to the thread for that day. Hopefully a thread per day will help us all keep track, considering we are across so many different time zones. :)

I'd love to give this a go, and thanks Meg and Sharon for the push!!
We just got back from 2 months vacation, and out of around 1500 photos I realised today as I browsed through them there are about 10 of me...and that was because I was consciously making an effort this time to get in the shots...!!
So when it is a self portrait is it ok if its one part of us? Like for instance my sunburnt shoulder from going to the beach today when 2 days ago it was winter?! Lol! Or does it have to be including the face?

Maikku
01-30-2008, 06:46 AM
I had a question is any photo manipulation allowed? Filters, hue/saturations adjustments etc. Should we keep these to a minimum?

Welcome back Pam - no, you don't need to include your face (although it would be nice to see sometimes :) ) It is a self portrait as long as there is something of you in it!

I had a question is any photo manipulation allowed? Filters, hue/saturations adjustments etc. Should we keep these to a minimum?

Yes - any amount of photo manipulation is allowed. It can be a great way to learn new techniques and have fun experimenting - which is part of what this challenge is all about! I have seen some amazing self portraits that could not have been done without post processing (eg putting a clone of yourself in the photo with you).

01-30-2008, 04:23 PM
Sharon I just suggested in Lisa's thread about Quick Clicks that what we need is a QC with 7 photos on it so at the end of each week we could put our weeks photos all on one layout so at the end of the month we would all have 4 layouts with our months photos on it heheh sure bean interesting overview of our photos hehehehe

GULP....well I will give it a go. I am actually looking forward to seeing a belly in the beginning of the month and then [**hopefully**] no belly at the end. I'm also missing from most of the vacation and family photos. And, like Carma, I'm also taking the photography class, so I guess that there is really no excuse for me not to take at least one photo a day of myself. I suppose that I could consider these as "before" photos - and then repeat the exercise next Feb. when I am an "after" and at least 50 lbs lighter.

I should fess up and tell you that I have a bit of a head start on you guys. I am on day 152 of a 365 day self portrait challenge on Flickr. I am HOPING to make it the full year!! If you really want a laugh, you can see my photos here. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shazzt/sets/72157601873126495/)

Flickr (http://www.flickr.com) is a great resource for ideas if you are stuck - just do a search on self portrait or maybe 365. The group I am part of is here (http://www.flickr.com/groups/threesixtyfive/pool/). Be aware that there is a full gamut of photography there so there may be some nudity and otherwise challenging images. Most people self censor but I can't promise that you won't see something that will offend you. I hope that doesn't put anyone off - but you have been warned!

shazzt
01-31-2008, 07:14 PM
I forgot to add that I have deleted hundreds of REALLY horrible shots before choosing one that was semi-decent. The good thing about self portraits is YOU have control over what gets seen by others :) If you have time, take several shots and try out different poses and angles. One great hint is to have the camera slightly above you to avoid that double chin look - check out this page (http://photodoto.com/index.php/2007/05/01/super-quick-and-easy-tip-for-more-flattering-portraits/) to see the difference camera angle can make!

All those who complete the mission (take a self portrait every day in February and post it either in the Next Step or Photo a Day gallery) will get a bonus for all their hard work (we will let you know what in Feb).

Hi....this sounds like fun. Not very good at taking pictures, but I will give it a go.
Hoping to learn something new and I think this is a good way to be silly and have a good time.
Cheers,
Maca

I was sitill wondering is it ok to adjust the photo's use a filter etc?

shazzt
02-01-2008, 05:21 PM
Yes - any amount of photo manipulation is allowed. It can be a great way to learn new techniques and have fun experimenting - which is part of what this challenge is all about! I have seen some amazing self portraits that could not have been done without post processing (eg putting a clone of yourself in the photo with you).

Yes - you certainly can :)

Oh Shoot!! Can I can go back and redo the picture so it in the right Photo a Day folder? I posted it the right day but I didn't know there were different folders! New kid here! I have NO idea how to do this right! I went back last night to see where supposed to post the link for this and I fell asleep reading it and I just finished up the thread! OK, I know where to post for this contest, but how do you find the correct folder for Photo a Day?

No worries - I moved the photo to the right gallery. You just need to look slightly below the Photo a Folder and you will see one that says This Months Photos :)

For many of us shy photographers, this challenge is more of a journey of self discovery. We see/accept the imperfections of our loved ones while we cringe at our own "shortcomings".

Looking through the gallery, I've now seen so many of you with whom I've talked many times. It is my honor that you've all invited me into your real lives. And I've noticed something....

Where many would see "crow's feet", I see lines of laughter and joy. I see faces softened with years, yet eternally firm with the yearning to learn new things. Our eyes may not be as strong as in our youth, but they shine clearer with empathy ,sympathy and understanding. Our chins may not be as "chiseled" but nor are they hardened with indifference- they are burnished with pride.

I see a gallery of vibrant, lovely people. Ladies, our lives live on on our faces and DANG... WE LOOK GOOOOOOOOODD !!!!!

Roberta- In the Grannies thread, whenever someone needs prayers, kind thoughts, and a shoulder to cry on, the grannies wrap that person in red threads- signifying thoughts from the heart, strong and enduring... so consider yourself wrapped in red threads. it may not make your problems go away, but may ease some of the burden knowing there are others who are keeping you in their thoughts.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread because I've been too busy looking at photos, commenting, and laughing constantly. This is the best challenge I've ever participated in. It has so many factors. First the fun and joy of getting to know my fellow scrappers soooo much better. Second, stretching my photographic knowledge and skills. Thirdly, appreciating my camera for what it can accomplish. Fourth, discovering the fun of taking a self-portrait (something that never occurred to me to do, the LAST thing I thought coulf be fun). But most of all, for beginning each day with enthusiasm and so much laughing and amazement at the creativity of everyone. Thank you so much Shazzt and Margo for this.

No problem I will gladly give the peanutbutter cookie recipe.
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
combine dry ingredients separately
In a new bowl combine the following:
1/2 cup Crisco (shortening)
1/2 cup peanutbutter (I used Skippy crunchy as I like the bits of peanuts)
1/2 cup brown sugar (firmly packed)
1/2 cut sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp of vanilla
Add the dry ingredients to the peanutbutter mixture
Using a teaspoon place dough on cookie sheet
Using a fork make a crisscross pattern on the top on the cookie dough
Bake for 15-20 min at 325
Enjoy - I usually double this recipe to make about 3-4 dozen cookies

8. You don't have to show your face - other parts of your body can tell a powerful story too.

Well, you have no Ideal just how powerful that story could be

I have had some people ask for clarification on what qualifies as a self portrait. Technically, a self portrait is one that you take yourself. Not easy I know (which is part of the challenge). I'm not going to be the photography police about anyone using "voice activated tripods" (ie other people) but I think these shots should be kept to the absolute minimum, if you do them at all. You can get help from others, but it should be you setting up the shot and pushing the button. It makes it more challenging, but you learn so much more :) Hope that is OK with everyone :)

My old point and shoot is a Canon A80 which has a flip out screen. It still does pretty well (but is underspecced by today's standards!) - we have had it for 4 years and it has been trouble free :)

Had a few moments so thought I would try to speed read through this thread and found Carolyn's sweet post....   lovely lady!

I would highly recommend the Canon S5. I got it for Christmas after doing a ton of research.....I have a gorgeous Nikon D70 DSLR that takes wonderful pictures, but I only have the standard lens and was wanting more zoom. I was also running into issues of lugging the huge camera and bag along with three kids to events. The lens would have been several hundered dollars so instead I bought the S5. It has a huge zoom on it which I wanted for the kids sports and other things, but it has the ease and smaller size of a point and shoot. However, it does have the hot shoe so I can attach an external flash (what I'm NOW saving up for...it comes with a pop up flash) and I bought the lens converter so I can still use filters like on the Nikon. I'm not saying it has the "professional quality" of the DSLR, but so far I'm more than happy with what I'm getting. There are still lots of manual options and fun things to play with on the S5 or you can use the auto "point and shoot". I learned a ton from really reading the manual as I like to play with the settings.

I use a Canon PowerShot A620. I've had it for a few years, so there are probably snappier, smarter, more compact ones out there now, but it's a good solid dependable performer. And yes, it does have the flip screen--very handy.

You can just sneak in here, it is up to you. If you want a photo for each of the days of the month go ahead and post one for each of the other days. Sharon is very open on how you do it. The main thing is for you to start getting photos of yourself and feel comfortable on this side of the camera as well as the person taking photos of things and people all the time and not being in the photo. So you are fine either way, it is up to you.

I have been taking the photos and hope to be able to get the time to post them before the end of Feb. My husband was admitted to the CCU in Vancouver general Hospital a week ago, and he is scheduled for coronary artery by-pass and heart valve repair sugery on Feb. 20th, so I've been spending long days at the hospital and on the road, as well as informing family and friends by phone and email about the situation, so leaving no time for scrapping. I was so into this challenge too, so hope I'll be able to post my photos after the crisis is passed.

Honestly, if it goes on in March I'll still do it. :-) I'm having a ball and it is forcing me to be creative. That and for the first time I'm seeing myself in my layouts with my family....it's fun!

Well I will be continuing on. I am doing a year long challenge (I am nearly halfway through) so if anyone wants to continue (or start up in March) they are more than welcome!!
