A thread just for random chattiness! A place where we can get to know each other better!

I'm very excited b/c our cold cold temps are rising to the 50s tomorrow! YAY! It's not fair to be so, so cold and not get enough snow to cover the ground!

So, what's new with all of you!?

Tina

oh goody a weather chat, nothing canadians like to discuss more than weather. lol. It's very chilly today but sunny! I hope hope hope the snow is done for the year on the westcoast but it's still January so not much hope of that just yet.

Tina
01-28-2008, 04:45 PM
LOL Mars!

I'd like to have some more snow, personally! We've gotten several snows this year, but nothing exciting!

It's 53 here and bright and sunny! We need a day to dry out, at least we aren't getting drenched like southern ca. On the bright sunny days you can see for miles but it's cold(to me under 70 i cold). Just looked at las vegas and it will be a whopping 55 degees! Can dsp do a laptop chat in hawaii or the bahamas..lol?

are you going to the crop, Brenda?

Yes! I fly out friday evening aound 8pm. I haven't flown for about 11 years so am still a bit confused about whAT I can take in a carry on. September the weather was so much better in las vegas, but the warmth of my fellow dspers will keep me warm!

I shouldn't have mentioned snow, it snowed today! not much but enough to make it slippery on our walk.

Bocca
01-29-2008, 07:04 PM
We started out with over 70 degree temp this morning and by late afternoon it's down to the low 30's. We don't get much snow here so send a little this way, Mars! The wind was so strong here today that there were times during the day that we couldn't open the front door of our office. Very unusual for us.

Tina
01-31-2008, 08:32 AM
We got that too Penny! It wasnt that warm tho, it was like 55 then dropped to the teens. The winds were like nothing I've ever heard, man they were BAD! 80MPH at times.

Tonight we are expecting rain/sleet/snow. I'm hoping for a snow day! w00t! lol!!

In other news- lol... Tate has recently joined chess club. Now, where will I find a chess club kit!! He's also joined a book club, and is hoping to join the yearbook committee. He's not a sporty kid, but he loves "clubs".

Lost is starting again tonight, anyone else excited?

Any big plans for the weekend? I wanted to see Untraceable last weekend, but it never came to our (one litte podunk) theater! They had like 3 new movies, but not that one! Maybe this weekend.

Tate wants to go shopping on Sat b/c he found a new Star Wars video game he wants. I will have to check his finances to see if he can even afford it ;)

Can I comment on this one? (I saw this thread in the NEW POSTS and decided to POP IN!)

Hi Brenda! (Have you been trying out any of those new-found skills from Sunday? Thoroughly enjoyed our get-together! Thanks SO much for bringing your LOs too ... wish I'da thought of that...next time...)

As far as your carry-on for flying ... just put all your liquids (toothpaste, perfume, hairsprays/gels, shampoo/conditioner, etc...) in your checkin and you won't have any problems. You will NOT be allowed to bring a bottled water, a coffee, etc through the security checkpoint...just plan to buy things like that from the airport venders on the 'inside circle'. I avoid having things like fingernail files, fingernail clippers, and the like as have contributed enough of them to security the first year after 911..ugg.

Here's the totally CRAZY whacko thing about their 'rules' .... a small fingernail file gets confiscated while I'm allowed to go through with my knitting project (which, btw, is on the long metal needles) ... yeah ... How DO those two rules live on the same page you ask??? Their response when I was shocked  ... "As long as you have a project ON them it's fine" .... let's just say the guys who make the rules must be a bit short on their logic classes ... I could be wrong here, but I would imagine that IF a terrorist WOULD be planning to use those needles to bring down the plane ... the 'project' would be inconsequential ... or am I missing an important point??? tee hee ... it gave me a good chuckle.

OH YEAH ... you WILL have to remove your shoes and walk on their hygenically cleaned (NOT) floor at the security checkpoint ... I highly recommend wearing clogs or sandles if you have any!!! and a pair of dark, thick, socks too. You can always change once you are through security if they didn't really match your outfit.

Geez...how did I miss this thread. LOL

Weather? Hmm...I am usually an indoor person, but since Bob had hernia surgery last Friday, I have had to take care of Harley....all walks, etc. Anyone who knows me knows I am a night owl and rarely get to bed before 3, 4, 5 or even 6 AM....and sleep intil noon or 1 PM or so. Harley needs to go out by 7:30 or 8 AM, so I have been going to bed around 1 or 2 AM....UGH...Not easy jumping out of bed and into clothes before I've had coffee. I barely get a couple of sips before we have to head out the door......for the 30-40 minute "routine". I bundle up in ear warmers, hat, hooded coat, gloves...and it's still cold. I never realized how much my nose could run being outside in the cold for that long. LOL. The only GOOD thing is how much I can get done by being up so early. I think the exhaustion is starting to take it's toll though......Bob goes back to the surgeon tomorrow,,,,,and will hopefully resume some of the Harley chores. LOL. I NEED SLEEP...

Tina
01-31-2008, 11:15 AM
Sandy! ugh, that does not sound like a fun change in schedule. Hope Bob is doing ok!

Any big plans for the weekend? I wanted to see Untraceable last weekend, but it never came to our (one litte podunk) theater! They had like 3 new movies, but not that one! Maybe this weekend.

At least you have one podunk theater! We have to drive about 45 miles to get to the nearest theater. We don't go to movies much any more.

I'm taking a photography class (finally trying to learn the manual settings) so I will be taking photos to take to class next Wed.

Sandy, hope Bob is doing well enough that he feels like taking over the "Harley" duties.

I"ve never watched Lost, but I am a big fan of American Idol. I'm so glad it's back. It's about the only show I actually watch without being on the computer at the same time.

Tina
01-31-2008, 01:59 PM
Oh, don't get me wrong, Penny... we don't "have" a theater. I, too, have to drive to get to one. About 30 mins in my case.

sandygb
01-31-2008, 03:00 PM
wow...I just took a nap. Haven't done that forever. LOL.

Penny...45 miles to a theater???? We aren't even that far from one when we're up in the mountains.....

Tina - YES about being anxious for LOST. I loved the rerun final episode that was on last night. I recorded it and Bob is watching it now. He never saw that episode in the Spring....so the captions really help to get caught up.....plus the bonus eggs. LOL.

Tina
01-31-2008, 03:55 PM
Sandy, let me tell you before they built the one in the town where we go now (I have to go there for groceries, walmart, eat out, etc... I call it "town" even tho its 30 mins!)- they had an old old theater that showed only one movie, so we drove an hour to get to the movies!

sandygb
01-31-2008, 05:39 PM
That kinda sounds like our place in the mountains. Their are 2 small towns. Each is 25 miles away. Each has 1 supermarket, but only 1 has a movie theater. The few kids go to school in one of the towns, and since they come from all over, many have a LONG bus trip (an hour and a half or so) each way. Right where our mountain place is, there are about 150 fulltime residents, the rest of the places are hunting cabins, with non-residents (like us). Talk about DARK....and QUIET...LOL. The big city (Williamsport) is almost an hour away, and most folks travel even further than that to get to a shopping mall with department stores. There are a few restaurants (I use that term loosely) near us. The closest is about 15 minutes away and is on a main road. We have driven to the restaurant and back to the cabin without passing a SINGLE CAR!!!! There is no cell phone service, no DSL, no cable...LOL. The only way to get TV or high-speed internet is via satellite. We did get TV, but not internet. It's way too expensive for the amount of time we spend there, and dial up would be too painful. LOL. It's my "internet" vacation when we go up there, so I actually have time to read! Bob was up there after Thanksgiving, but I haven't been up since early November. We plan on going up the end of next week if Bob feels up to it. It will be nice to get away!!!

Tina
01-31-2008, 06:14 PM
LOLOLOL Sandy, welcome to my world!!!

I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere! It's 30 mins to the town with walmart/kmart/fast food/sit downs/theater, etc.. 50 mins to the mall. Im so lucky I get DSL out here. If I looked out my front window I could see 4 houses.

My old house, my parents house, Tate's principals house, and Tate's principals aunt's house. Its another 1/2 mile to the rest of the houses from here.

iwuvpsp
01-31-2008, 06:21 PM
That sounds lovely! but...I would be ready for home in about a week. okok, I would be ready for my internet in about a week,
I love to camp, and your cabin sounds wonderful.
I don't do movie theaters. I am one of those that prefers to wait and do the rental thing. I can't see spending so much money I live in the middle of a City, so we have all kinds of malls, theaters, resturants and such, but I enjoy country much more and I am such a cheap skate that I don't really use any of them.

Tina

BTW, my inlaws used to live in Eugene years ago. My FIL grew up in Klamath Falls.

iwuvpsp
01-31-2008, 07:15 PM
I have only been in Eugene a bit over 11 years. I came from a small town in New York. I miss it a little.
BTW, Eugene got snow Monday. Not just a dusting, we got enough to build snowmen, shovel, all the fun stuff like that
I know most people are going, "Snow is not a big deal", but it is here. This is one of those places that if we get a dusting, the City shuts down. Monday the city went in to panic mode ;) They had people calling in to where my DH works, trying to take the week off due to being snowed in. Yes, I said week. The snow was gone by Tuesday morning.:D

sandygb
01-31-2008, 07:19 PM
LOL Tina - I can see about 8 houses from our mountain house, but only 2 of them live there fulltime.....the couple who live behind us and their teenage daughters, and his mother's house. (He was born and raised there). His sister lives within walking distance up the street and so does his brother. Believe me - you can't sneeze without the knowledge getting down the lane. LOL.

HOME on the otherhand, is in the suburbs of Philadelphia......probably 10 HUGE shopping malls within a 30 minute radius.....more movie theaters than I can count, 3 Walmarts, 2 Kmarts, 2 Kohl's, Target, tons of restaurants from fast food to 5 star, I can't even count the number of supermarkets within 5 miles.......BUT it used to take me 10 minutes to drive 1.5 miles to work....and 20 minutes to drive home in rush hour traffic, due to grid-lock. Talk about road-rage!!!! Yikes. I guess it's nice to have the best of both worlds.....even if we have to put up with the shortcomings of each......

sandygb
02-05-2008, 03:56 AM
Just wanted to let you all know that we are leaving for the mountains on Thursday so I will be out of touch for 10 days to 2 weeks. YAY!!! That means an internet vacation and I get to read....LOL. I do plan on taking my laptop and hope to scrap a bit, but won't be doing any challenges.....aww.....I will miss that part......

Did you know that Weight Watchers has an Online program? You can join that and not have to go to meetings. Check it out at weightwatchers.com
I presume there is a charge for joining.

Another great diet resource site is fitday.com
It is free and allows you to track your food and your weight. I found that keeping a food diary is a wonderful way to lose weight. I lost almost 70 pounds a few years ago by keeping a food diary at Fitday and sticking to a low-carb 1200 calorie a day diet.

I am trying NutriSystem this time, and they also have an online food diary that already has all of their meals plugged in, so it's fairly easy to keep track of calories and nutrition. So far, I've lost 12 pounds. Would like to lose 40-50 more. Ugh....

lilanne99
02-05-2008, 06:32 PM
There is a charge.... you pay a flat 1st time joining fee (can't remember how much, sorry), but monthly is $16.95. I love WW!

Mars, did it snow where you are the last 2 days? We had snow yesterday afternoon, and again this morning. It is below freezing, and the wind is blowing quite hard too. The roads are icy, so we have to walk in the mall. I'm so tired of this long cold winter this year.

Tina

MarsOlson

sandygb
02-05-2008, 11:41 PM
I figured they stuck Lost in Grey's slot because they are new shows...NOW...if they produce more Grey's, I wonder if they'll be on the same night, or if Lost will go back to Weds?

Tina
02-05-2008, 11:54 PM

We got SNOW this morning in Nashville. All the counties around ours (Davidson) were out of school. It was really pretty today. Hey all!

Its snow day #2 here this week, and your challenge for this week is all ready! Might post today, or may post until the 'appointed' Thursday.

We've not gotten a lot of snow, but ours keeps getting topped with ice. Our school district is very long, and lots of rural roads. We have kids that are on buses for over 2 hrs. If i got in the car and drove to one of the places still in our district, it would take me nearly an hour to get there in a car with no stops! So, no school. lol.

Tina

Hey, Molly, I was born in Memphis (many years ago). Even though I haven't lived there in many, many years, I still consider it my home town. A lot of my relatives still live around there.

Cool!

LOL Tina....You've been complaining about the lack of snow and here you are wishing for spring....while I am not a snow lover, yet LOVED the snow we had in the mountains. We also just had around 5 inches at home....and I don't like it here nearly as much. LOL. We don't need to shovel in the mountains. LOL..

Snow I LOVE. Snow with ice, not so much!!! Probably has something to do with the year we lost power for 4 days and water for 7- over Christmas! ;)

Tina, already got the new kit ready for next week! I notice that you have both the Canon 75-300mm and Tamron 18-200mm lens. Do you like one better than the other? I'm looking at getting the 75-300 IS but just wondered if the Tamron compared in quality.

Tina
02-22-2008, 11:11 PM
The Tamron is a very nice lens as well. I got it v. Canon b/c Canon doesn't make an 18-200mm. lol...

Only thing about the Tamron is that it zooms backwards. You twist it the opposite direction to zoom. Hard to get used to at first.

Sunshine! Spring seems to be coming early to the westcoast. It's a beautiful day, perfect for finishing the Sunny Day lo. I was tempted to use photos of my sweet dog, Sunny, and took him out for a walk to get new pics but he doesn't suit pink so well. lol My daughter (#2) left for Peru on Tuesday so I am expecting good scrapping photos from her one of these days, I am worrying a bit because she is an adventurer and won't be happy with sticking to safe tourist places and is planning treks into the mountains and jungle.

Tina, thought of you today and had to post this. I saw on TV that HP book 7 will be broken into 2 movies and not be put all into one movie. They say it will come out in 2010 in spring and fall. I just want to know when the next one comes out or if JK is going to write anymore 'wizard type' books.

LOL, my HARD DRIVE budget!! I've got almost 80 gb of digital scrapping kits stuffed on the lappie, and we only have a 120 gb hd on it!!:eek::eek: So, if I want to purchase an EHD, I have to use my DSP allowance for it!! That'll be equal to about 2 weeks' worth of purchases for me. :( BUT, an EHD is VERY important, as it will free up lappie space, and speed up PS usage, so it's all good! :D

Glad to see you're back online! :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Penny - I think I'd go for the computer first. If you get a new lens, you're gonna want to scrap all those awesome photos anyway, so you might as well have the tools to scrap with first.

Shawn - External drives are a necessity for digiscrappin. Kits...photos....all that stuff takes SPACE. When you do get one, go as big as you can afford because you will outgrow it way sooner than you think. My first external was 100 GB and within 2 months, I realized that would never do. After all, I did want to backup my photos and layouts, and the backups alone used tons of space. I got a 200 GB next, then within 6 months added a 500 GB and continued to use all 3. When my 500 GB was getting full, I got a 1 TB and only have 190 GB free. LOLOL. Okay, I admit, I do keep redundant backups of my critical files incase one of the drives fails. I have removed my 100GB drive, but when I get some time, I plan on backing up my photos and layouts and keeping that drive in the mountains for safe-keeping. My 200GB is where I put all my scrap kits and layouts. I take it with me to the mountains and use it with my laptop. At home, I use my desktop....

I don't know too much about the book Fiona except that one of the audience members who had already read it, said it was her favorite book and that she actually wrote to the author after reading it. It's a mystery and a love story and also about a dog. Oprah said if you have pets, you will LOVE this book. She also cautioned against reading the inside flap of the dust cover because it gives away too much information. Just an FYI...

Tina

What is the book, Sandy?

and yay for Twilight, tho I was not thrilled with the last one. It was a good book, just not quite what I had wished for.

Im reading 2 books right now. One is Searching for Alaska by John Green*

the other is Marked by PC and Kristen Cast. Its a vamp/teen book. Kinda weird, not sure i like.

*Ok, John Green- I found him by watching his Vlog. Last year he and his brother Hank used no text to communicate all year. Only phone, in person, or via their daily vlog. Its so funny. I love them. John has written 2 books, Searching for Alaska & An Abundance of Katherines. I've read the latter already. He has a new one coming out soon too, called Paper Towns coming out soon.

Interested in their vlog? I have it on my blog, but here it is. I'm only 1/2 way through (July). Slow, eh?

Tina - Oprah's new book club selection is "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" by David Wroblewski. I ordered it from Borders.com, at 40% off, so it came to $15.57. I don't recall the minimum for free shipping, but it was reasonable....$25 or $30 and I didn't have any trouble adding a couple more things, which were also on sale - including "For My Grandchild: A Grandmother?s Gift Of Memory" by Paige Gilchrist. It is a book of prompts to write my own memories as a gift to my grandchild. I thought that sounded like a cool idea and something I could start on now.....while I am waiting.....LOL.

Sandy, I bought one of those books for each of Tate's grandmothers when he was little. He has 2 grands and 2 great grands. To my knowledge they are filling them out. lol. I know DH's grandmother is, and mine is. I THINK my mom and MIL are, not sure!

Penny - I still have and LOVE my Canon digital elph. Mine is a Powershot S400 which is an older 4 MP camera, but it small enough to keep in my handbag without even keeping it in a camera bag. There are many times I use this instead of my Canon XTi. It's about 4 years old and the only thing I have replaced are the original battery and the backup battery I bought when the camera was new. Neither would hold a charge any longer. Canon wanted about $50 for the battery, but I found a generic brand that was priced at 2 for $6.00. YES...you read that right!!! These batteries have held a charge for longer than the original Canon ones.

I love the Twilight series. The way the last book ended cracked me up. I guess I went into this series realizing I was reading for fun not for college literature. I still want more. I forget where I read it but she was going to do the same book but from Edmond's point of view but someone close to her leaked the book to the internet and she got so bummed that she is now not going to do it. However she does have a version on her site of what the book might have been like. It was fun to read it from his point of view.

Sandy I have to head to get Oprah's new book. Sounds good. I love the idea grandma books. Might be good to start (even though I now have no grandkids LOL)just so I dont forget as I get older.

Hard to figure out what to say and what special item I want to put in it. The time capsule will be opened on their 16th birthday. finally got through all my DVRed shows for the week, even tho I missed the 2nd 1/2 of Survivor since it was 2 hrs and both my tuners were recording (Grey's and The Office)!

ER was depressing
Grey's was good, but odd at times. lol... I love Lexi, shes so funny.
The Office had a great ending!
The Big Bang Theory was funny, but not as funny as usual!

Cant remember what else I watched this week! LOL! Looking forward to The Amazing Race Sunday!!!!!!

Grey's was good - I want to know who that army doctor was. He is a great foil for Christine. Loved the nurse when she told McDreamy she was pregnant! Thought it was very clever of the writers to acknowledge that the show dropped to #12 in ratings and they need to be doing something more to bring the show back to top form.

I cant wait for the Race. Every time I watch I see new countries I want to visit. Looks like very interesting duos.

Maybe a new spin off for Christine and Army doctor at the end of this season. A new trama/ER doctor show now that ER is going off.

I don't remember where I saw it....whether in press or on TV, but I know I heard that a new male doctor was going to be on Grey's, so I assume he is the one! I expect he will stay.

hello my lovelies! what is new and exciting in your worlds this week?

did you all have a good weekend?

we did. Mostly stayed home, had a weenie roast w/ my ILs here on Sat, yesterday went to church then stayed home the rest of the day and caught some season premieres last night :)

Tina, sounds like you had a wonderful, relaxing weekend.

We went the busy route this weekend. DD goes to a private school and because they are small she gets to march with the HS band. Which is loads of fun but lots of work! She had the ball game friday night and competition all day Saturday. Sunday was church and then Sunday afternoon was a Girl Scout Awards Ceremony. After that, I rolled into bed for a power nap, got up and did laundry for school today, monitored homework, and then crawled back in bed. LOL!

I'm looking forward to a relaxing weekend but it looks like it won't happen until around mid-November.

A weenie roast sounds wonderful. The neighbors have a fire pit and I can't wait to roast some weenies.

Friday night Isabella cheered with the high school cheerleaders. They HS cheerleaders do a kiddie camp as a fundraiser during football and another during basketball season.

Saturday would have been Isabella and Kaylor's football game, however we went with my Mom to see The Lion King instead which was absolutely incredible. It was fun watching the kids' reaction to the elephant and other animals walking down the aisle right next to them. I will never get tired (at least I don't think I will) of seeing Lion King. After the show we had a fabulous dinner at Sakura which is a new Japanese steakhouse.

Yesterday, I assisted in the 3-5 year old room @ church. After some errands we came home for a nice afternoon nap. Neilston took the kids outside to do an obstacle course he built while I went to the grocery store.

Tina
09-29-2008, 12:51 PM
Diane, that sounds like a great if not crazy weekend! I did laundry too. Actually all day yesterday, lol, but I'd fold while watching tv. I watched Marie Antoinette. That was kinda a stupid movie!

christina, they do that at our high school too. Did you get some good pics?

Oooooooooooooh, the Lion King. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that!!!

Love Neilston's super dadness!

The Lion King is very cool... we went to Australia to see it, but would love for the kids to experience it.

This week we are celebrating our Antarctic Heritage and so the Antarctic centre was only $25 to get in for a family instead of $135. So got to see the penguins being fed and had a ride on a Hagland [sp?]. The also opened up the Deep Freeze base which is the American air base and we got to go through and sit in the cockpit of a US Airforce Hercules and Globemaster (way cool!).

School holidays for the next 2 weeks... so will see what else we can explore around town.

Tina
09-29-2008, 04:02 PM
That sounds super cool, Fiona. What is a hagland tho?

honeymoon
09-29-2008, 04:15 PM
Had a funny feeling that I hadn't spelt that right. A hagglund is an all terrain vehicle that they use down at Antarctica. So in our short ride they took you up and down hills with 30-45 degree slopes and then through a 4m deep pond (it floats, with the water up to the windows). Very bumpy and a bit like a rollercoaster ride.

Tina
09-29-2008, 04:25 PM

Fiona, that does sound like fun!

Tina, DH did laundry and cleaned the bathroom!!! YAY!!! He couldn't make the competition Saturday so he cleaned, mowed the yard and did some paperwork. I still have to fold the laundry. HIs idea of laundry is just washing and drying. I guess he thinks it magically gets to everyone's baskets (I have baskets that folded laundry goes in - everyone puts their own away or it gets dumped on their bed when it is overflowing). So tomorrow night I'll fold and iron.

Tonight, it's all DET Announcment Chat and homework. Tried to get Savannah to do her homework last night, but wasn't successful so I'll have to yell at (ummm....encourage) her periodically to make sure she's staying focused.

Tina
09-29-2008, 04:38 PM
Oh, nice DH! At least he did that much! I'm impressed!

What grade is Savannah? 7th? Tate's 6th, and I have to do A LOT of 'encouraging' for homework. And it only gets WORSE from here! Jr High next year!

diturpin
09-29-2008, 04:50 PM
Savannah's in 7th. It is worse (more in volume) but her school does a split schedule. Monday and Wednesday (A schedule) she has 4 classes (80 min. each) and then Tues/Thursday (B schedule) the other 4 classes. Friday rotates each week - A schedule one week and B the next. Our biggest problem is her hard classes are all on B schedule which means if she has alot of homework due on Tuesday, she likes to put it off until Monday instead of doing it over the weekend. After 7 weeks, she is finally realizing that Mom yells less if she works ahead on some of her homework instead of waiting till the last minute.

And oh...she inherited the procrastinatin gene from me...

Been there...done that...got yelled at by mom...

Sounds like I should scrap a page on procrastination and family traditions!

Tina
09-29-2008, 04:52 PM
LOL on the page!!!

They did that at our High School 2 yrs ago, but switched it after just a year, I think it was too confusing. They called it "block scheduling" here.

diturpin
09-29-2008, 05:41 PM
Block Scheduling is what they call it here. Savannah likes it, and the school has used some form of it for several years. This is the 1st year they have done 4 and 4. Last year they had 7 classes and I have no clue how they did that one.

Carolyn I am discovering that I really like to read all the series books in a row. I waited until the HP books were done and then started. I hate having to wait for the next book. I did the same thing with the Twilight series. The only bad thing is that after the end you want more!

Fringe was really good again! Sure keeps your attention!

I'm here. Shopping on the Internet. Just bought a new cordless phone/Skype phone. Am am cooking both fried chicken and barbeque chicken.

Should really make that new batch of gelato.

Was just wondering about an hour ago, what to do now that the Harry Potter series is finished. I don't read anything else like that. Right now I am rereading all of Peter Mayle's set in Provence novels - Chasing Cezanne, Anything Considered, Hotel Pastise.

OK, I had to go and call mom up in Brisbane on the Skype, to read her the bit about the dragon on your blinkie. That is SO good, Tina! I really love it! :)

Tina

LOL on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sandy!

What exactly IS gelato, Leslie? I hear it mentioned a lot, but no idea what it is!

As for post Potter reading, I enjoyed the Twilight series and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

LOL on my dragon line, I've used that on and off on this site since day 1.

I always thought Gelato was an Italian ice cream-like sweet. Kind of a cross between ice-cream and water-ice.

Tina
10-10-2008, 04:00 PM
Right you are, Sandy, wiki says:

Gelato, or the plural Gelati, is Italian ice cream made from a liquid, milk or water; a solid, sugar, fats or sweeteners; flavorings, pastes, fruit powders; stabilizers, guar gum, locust bean, etc.; emulsifiers, mono- and digylcerides; and air. The process in which gelato is made varies on the ingredients used as it can be made using a hot process, which includes pasteurization or as a cold process which doesn't require pastuerization. Both processes require a gelato batch freezer, which makes the end product by mixing the ingredients and incorporating air. Like high-end ice cream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_cream), gelato generally has less than 55% air, resulting in a denser and more flavorful product.

look at this, isn't it cool???

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/69/Durian_Gelato.JPG/250px-Durian_Gelato.JPG

Now, how do I make it??

diturpin
10-10-2008, 04:33 PM
Oh yum Tina! Maybe Leslie will tell you how but I think she has a special gelato maker/freezer thingy.

BTW, love your big sofa picture. Savannah would DIE A HUNDRED DEATHS if I ever blew up a picture of her that large! LOL! But then again, we are in that "don't take my picture, I look horrible, preteen drama queen stage!"

And lastly, what did you get shopping this morning? Hmm...I've been checking up on you!

Leslie
10-10-2008, 04:47 PM
Ok, it is slightly denser than ice cream - the crystals are smaller.

It's made exactly the same way. It comes out in glorgeous (trying to say gorgeous and glorious all at the one time) colors.

I made peach ice cream, then I made WHOA! INCREDIBLE! peach gelato.

With the ice cream, I used a potato masher and mashed up a cup of peaches. I used a half a cup of sour cream in the mixture for texture. You can't taste the sour cream, the sugar completely hides it.

To make the gelato, I bamixed (blended the heck out it) about 2 cups of peaches, canned and drained. Add a cup of sugar and a half a teaspoon of lemon juice. Bamix again. Sit it in the fridge, covered tightly (I use gladwrap) for a day.

Get one egg in a saucepan, add a half teaspoon of vanilla, a cup of sugar, a cup and a half of really heavy cream and a cup of buttermilk. I bamix it all together.

Turn on the heat and wait for a minute, then when the burner is hot, put the saucepan on the stove and stand and stir for JUST one minute until it just gets barely hot, then take it straight off the stove and I pour it into a glass bowl through a strainer, wait 'til it's cool, gladwrap it and pop it in the fridge for a day.

The next day, take your icecream maker bowl out of the bottom of your freezer where it lives, assemble it, pour in both mixtures, fruit and the custard, give it a quick stir, then turn on the machine. It takes 20 - 30 minutes and beeps to tell you it's done.

Pour the still gooey ice cream/gelato into your tupperware container and pop into the freezer. Wash off all the pieces of the ice cream maker and dry them, and store the freezer part back in the bottom of the freezer. It must have been in the freezer for at least a day, to work properly.

I have had 8 trips to Italy, and I know my gelato. Most of it is made with a powder mix that makes me wheeze and cough. But the texture - it's all about the texture. :) You know the difference between say, cottage cheese and yoghurt? Well, there is a difference between the texture of gelato and ice cream. Subtle, but two different things.

My gelato (http://lesliesmyers.blogspot.com/2008/10/homemade-raspberry-gelato.html) has the exact same texture and the gorgeous colors as the ones I have in Italy, and it is made with pure fruit, not powder mix. I can't get gelato over here. Well - I couldn't... :)

sandygb
10-10-2008, 04:55 PM
OMG Leslie - That sounds delicious!!!!!! The only problem is (IMO) it only makes a single serving. I am positive that I would finish it all in one sitting. YUM! It also sounds like it takes a fair amount of work too......Plus the waiting time in between. I'm not sure I could stand that.

LOL Sandy! Me too, I'd be dipping my fingers into the bowls during their 'wait period' in the fridge!!

Leslie
10-10-2008, 05:03 PM
Ok, it takes me a week to get through a litre. I have about 2 dessert spoons full at a time in a small dish. I just ate it for breakfast with a cappuccino.

It takes one minute to put the fruit and sugar in a bowl and bamix it, add the lemon juice and gladwrap it and put it in the fridge.

It takes three minutes to put the egg, cream, buttermilk, sugar and vanilla in a blow, bamix it for 30 seconds, heat it for one minute only while stirring, then strain it into a bowl and leave to cool, then gladwrap and put in the fridge.

The next day, it takes one minute to assemble the machine, pour in the mix then go and read the Granny Thread while the machine makes the gelato. When it beeps, it takes one minute to turn it off, take off the lid, and pour it into the tupperware container and put it in the freezer.

It takes one minute to wash everything and put it away.

I use this Krups (It takes one minute to wash everything and put it away.) that I got for A$70 from The Good Guys - an electrical store where I buy all of my appliances.

I made it yesterday while talking on line with two NKOTB and a couple of regulars, in the chat room. :) I had the laptop in the kitchen.

Here is the process on my blog, Kaleidoscope (http://lesliesmyers.blogspot.com/2008/10/homemade-raspberry-gelato.html). :)

Leslie
10-10-2008, 05:16 PM
I also have two batches in the freezer at once, so I have a scoop of peach with a scoop of raspberry/blackberry at the moment.

Before that, I was eating a scoop of my chocolate with a scoop of cherry.

I have a shortcut. With the raspberry/blackberry, I actually put both the fruit mixture and the custard mixture into the freezer for 60 minutes, set the timer, then put it through the machine. I was in a hurry, and wanted to eat it the next morning. It worked perfectly.

But the current one has been in the fridge since yesterday and I will make it this afternoon. I'm not in a hurry as I still have some in the freezer.

sandygb
10-10-2008, 05:52 PM
Leslie, I'm not sure how much a litre actually is, but a half-gallon of ice cream is 4 bowls for me, so I doubt it would last me a week.

I wouldn't mind the actual hands-on time to make it......but the waiting time between would be excruciating. LOLOL. I guess I would have to have mulitple batches in process all the time......

Tina
10-11-2008, 09:41 AM
Well, dang that sounds delish! I dont have an ice cream maker tho! Well, I do, but I call him "Dad" and he still cranks his by hand in an antique ice cream maker ;)

Diane, Tate was only 7 in that pic in the couch print layout, so he's ok with it! LOL!
Only went to Sams, so nothing too exciting! TP? Combos, reeses pieces, tea bags..... ya know, exciting stuff!

Shawn, I haven't read them yet! I have Brisingr (sure I spell that wrong) here waiting, but I've not even read Eragon, and just discovered we dont HAVE Eldest. Uh, thought we did! I started reading Marked by PC & Kristin Cast, but found it a little weird and I dunno, something about it I didnt like. Unlike Stephenie Meyer, this series felt a little anti God at times. I sent it back to the library 1/2 way thorugh.

I am off to see The Dutchess w/ my friend Stephanie today. I think we'll HAVE to stop by Sonic and get a Java Chiller!

Tina

yeah, i agree about Lupin and Tonks. She said they weren't intended to die (either), but after she decided to 'save' Mr Weasley (he was supposed to die in OotP with the snake attack), she needed to kill off parental figures.

sad.
